Several well-placed friends of mine are growing concerned with orders they've received to begin moving tanks, troops, subs and warships to the Syrian border. The majority of American soldiers are more than just frustrated with the "war" they've been tasked to fight, but the possibility of fighting another enemy of the Bush administration will really deaden morale.

Has anyone heard anything else about the strengthening of American troops on the Syrian border?

No, but looks like the Royal Marines are cooking up something.

U.S., Syria border clashes reported
WASHINGTON, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The Bush administration is reportedly considering incursions into Syria as it tries to stem the flow of arms and fighters for the Iraqi insurgency. The New York Times says U.S. and Syrian forces have already been involved in skirmishes on the border, including one this summer that left several Syrians dead. One official told the Times the United States has taken the struggle right up to the border but not beyond. Other officials said U.S. forces have entered Syria both by accident and design. Sources said the administration held a high-level discussion Oct. 1 on Syria and on putting pressure on President Bashar Assad. They told the Times President Bush has not selected a specific strategy yet.

The administration has reportedly offered Syria a deal similar to that with Libya -- with friendship and foreign aid exchanged for a number of concessions.

Didn't mean that to sound snotty--although I realize it may. Not meant to be.

The link supplied by Peace, in his post of 05 Nov 05 - 04:04 PM

"GIs Launch Iraq Offensive Near Syrian Border"

Not to be considered reticent Peace (05 Nov 05 - 04:07 PM) puts two and twelve together, and provides the following:

"BAGHDAD (Reuters) - About 3,500 U.S. and Iraqi troops launched a major offensive near Iraq's Syrian border on Saturday in the Sunni Arab western province of Anbar"

Eh, Peace, ould son, there is no difference in the stories, they are both about US/Iraqi Forces operation in the west of IRAQ. No mention of incursions into Syria or of any impending attack on Syria.

Divis Sweeney, Royal Marines / Syria? if they are there at all they are at the other end of the country.

"No mention of incursions into Syria or of any impending attack on Syria."

I know that. Glad you do too. However, it does indicate that there are some troops in the neighbourhood, right?

Hello! I know our battlecruisers are heading that way and we have one submarine joining them. The Navy doesn't move out like that for nothing. I think we all know what's on Bush's mind...Too bad for our troops because we're stretched too thin as it is.

Epona:
"I know our battlecruisers are heading that way and we have one submarine joining them."

They're going to find that a bit difficult in western Iraq E - marked lack of water. By the bye, if it is the Royal Navy you are talking about, we haven't had, or built, 'battlecruisers' since before the First World War.

Peace - 05 Nov 05 - 04:40 PM

"I am watching you, Teribus!"

Good one Peace, that I found funny.

I hope that IF a combined Iraqi/American force DO visit Syria, that there will be a plan in place BEFORE the 'incursion'. Syria is not a peace-loving country, IMO. And I do not doubt their link to terrorist networks.

Stop with the insults. I'm not British. I was speaking about the American Navy. As hard as you may find it to believe, in a letter released to some JAG personnel, it layed out how several of our naval components are on the move to provide support for "Syrian disturbances."

I don't belive the US Navy ever had battlecruisers, they were particularly a European thing.

Oh, it's that American slang of mine getting in the way...you'll have to forgive me as I'm army and not a squid. The really big ships that fire off really big guns, that can hit targets from really far away....I'm talking about those.
I deal with boots, ruck sacks, and tents. I prefer to stay on land as I get sea sick.

Thanks for the link Peace, very interesting the Constellation Class vessel's that were actually built I recognised as being very famous USN Aircraft Carriers, the two Alaska Class I had never heard about.

I thought it strange that the USN was prompted to build such ships based on RN experience during the First World War (Heligoland and Falklands) as the US could never be caught out in the same situation.

The RN developed Battlecruisers to act as a countermeasure to an attack on the British Isles by German Dreadnoughts raiding across the relatively short distance of the North Sea. They were a reaction force and had to be quick enough to catch the raiders while en route, either on the way there if possible, or on their way back. They had to be armed so as to be able to inflict damage on heavily armoured Battleships, either to sink them, or more likely slow them down so that the Home Fleets Battleships could arrive and finish the job. Because of the speed issue, Battlecruisers were not heavily armoured and as such were vulnerable as was seen with the ships of Beatty's Squadron turning 'Hell Fire Corner' at the Battle of Jutland, and the fate of HMS Hood when she met the Bismark as she emerged from the Denmark Strait during the Second World War.

Is everyone aware that Teribus visits this site under the name of GUEST Ooh-Aah2 ? Told me in a pm. Just thought you may like to know.

You can print or forward that pm then Ralph?

I've just checked the record of pm's I have sent and none have been sent to you, so maybe it was Guest Ooh-Aah2 who sent it to you. Shouldn't be too difficult after all you just have to type is Ooh-Aah2 after the GUEST, instead of Ralph, but I'm sure Joe Offer or Max can tell if it's the genuine article. One thing's for sure I haven't been in contact with you.
