Was looking for "Isle of Arran" to illustrate a post on the Guinness thread, when I came across this wonderful resource

I love having a rotation of nice images for computer wallpaper, and some of these are going in tonight.

I'd like to see what others have found of picturesque places in the world, or just art you like....

(they need to be at least 1024x768 for most users these days)

I often update my wallpaper from this site:

Cool Juneau Photos

And here's a startling image: A Storm of Pollen

Bill ...I can see the hills of Arran from my window...The sleeping warrior..Goat fell, and not a sign of humanity between.

How lucky I am to have lived in this beautiful place all my life.

I sometimes wonder about the constant striving for material things.

We come into the world naked and pennyless, but in reality we have everything we could ever need, its just that we have been taught to value rubbish and ignore the gifts of our gods...Ake

Thanks, Ebbie...studying them now!

you ARE lucky, Ake...that's why I am so grateful for technology that allows me to have such images greet me when I log onto my computer! Right now it is Kilchurn Castle, but others will be coming every hour.

(Perhaps it is my Scots ancestry that draws me especially to these, but then, there is real universal appeal in ANY views like them.)

Some very nice photos Bill.
I think I'll put Balamory on the Ducklings login for the computer.
I may just swim on the Union Canal.
Quack!!!

If you keep program icons on your desktop as I do, large pictures may not be what you need for the "wallpaper."

I usually use a favorite picture at about 750 pixels wide by 600 pixels high, and paste it in the lower right corner of a 1024 x 768 blank page, so the picture isn't covered by the icons, and doesn't interfere with seeing what the icons are for.

I'd suggest that a dark background shows the icons better, but you can match it to the background of the inset pic you use in most cases so that it doesn't look too much like you've just hung something on a thumbtack.

I tend to use "people pictures" rather than landscapes, so an inset works nicely. Your mileage may vary.

Any Windows version Win95 and after lets you set any image (that Windows can display) from anywhere on your machine as a "background." Just right click any blank space on the desktop, click Properties, Background Tab, and Browse.

WinXP lets you select "My Picture Gallery" to display all the pictures in any folder as a screen saver. This feature isn't in Win95, and I don't know when it was introduced. Same place, right click desktop, click Properties, and the Screen Saver tab, select the "My Pictures" screen saver and then browse to the folder you really want to display.

(Alternate access to the Display setup is Start|Control Panel|Display.)

I gave up icons on the desktop. I was putting WAY too much there and it just looked awful. (Our puder is in a prominent place in th4e living room, only place to put it....) The icons are there if I really need to see them-- I just deselected "Show Icons" on the Desktop Properties. So like John, I have a smallish picture; it's a strongly-colored poster that occupies the center of the huge screen I have, bordered by that deep blue looking like a proper mat.

Screensaver, too, yes, as I have posted about often-- from across the room they ALL look clear, expanded to fill the screen. Or I can set them up in slideshow in their original size.

I have 3 options--- I can do like WSI and hide icons, I can use Dexpot and move from a screen with 30-40 icons on certain edges to totally BARE in one click, or I can leave icons visible and choose wallpaper with dark areas under the icons....(really a lot with a little looking!)

Dexpot (or other virtual desktop controllers) allow having 2, 3, 5...or more desktop configurations easily changable. One can have changing images, one can have a permanent image, one can have a few icons, one can have many.....and maybe too many choices IS the problem for some folks..*grin*.....but technology is great when it allows us to cater to out own personal notion of what is useful.

Okay, but too young for me. My current wallpaper is the first picture (scroll down) at Honthorst. It's nice that the young lady is playing music, but THAT SMILE just seems to cheer me.

Many thanks for the tip, Bill. I just hope I don't get sacked for not doing any work and just staring at the desktop all day!

Bill D -

I've got hundreds of equally "attractive" art in my files, but it really is the SMILE that's kept that one up.

In looking at the Juneau photos today I found my home: about one third of the way in from the right behind a tallish building is a white square. That's me!

My Tall, Stately White House *G*

If you do go there, the photo just previous to today's (every other day) is pretty awesome. Hoonah is an Alaskan Native village about 4 hours away from Juneau by ferry; Port Frederick is just beyond.
