And we dream of dear old Harrow and we hear the crows loud caw. At the flowershow our big marrow won the prize from Evelyn Waugh Cups of tea and some dry sherry vintage cars those simple things. So lets drink up and be merry for the Captains and the Kings, Let us drink up and be merry for the Captains and the Kings. Fergus |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: Georgiansilver Date: 12 Nov 05 - 05:30 PM Evelyn Waugh was born in London into a comfortable middle-class family. Catherine (Raban) Waugh, his mother, was born in India, but grew up in England. Evelyn had a better relationship with her than with his his father, Arthur Waugh (1866-1943), a publisher and literary critic, who preferred Evelyn's older brother Alec. Waugh was educated at Lancing College, Sussex, and at Hertford College, Oxford, where he read modern history. For his disappointment, the behavior of the upper-class student was not especially sophisticated - it was savage and amoral, and at Lancing College Waugh was was bullied by his classmates. Later he returned to his experiences in his novels. His college years Waugh spent in drinking. His brother Alec had an homosexual relationship at the Sherborn College, and was dismissed. Alec Waugh wrote an autobiographical book of the event, which in practice had prevented Evelyn from entering the same college. After studying in London at Heatherley's Art School and working for a short time as a schoolmaster at Arnold House in North Wales, Waugh devoted himself to writing. Hope that helps. Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: bobad Date: 12 Nov 05 - 05:35 PM "His college years Waugh spent in drinking" That's probably why it was thought he was Irish. |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 12 Nov 05 - 06:42 PM "Raban", his mother's family name is typically a Jewish surname. I have a feeling that'd set him spinning in his grave as well. |

Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 13 Nov 05 - 03:13 AM The late great Dusty Springfield once wrote that being Irish was mainly a state of mind. I think it would only be fair to commandeer him if he wanted to be Irish. sometimes its surprising who comes from where. |

Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: GUEST Date: 13 Nov 05 - 01:55 PM The dear old Irelands Own is being accused in the wrong,I doubt if they ever claimed this poof as Irish, although like Liberace I hear he possessed the charm for the cure of Piles. |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: GUEST,Chongo Chimp Date: 13 Nov 05 - 02:06 PM There're only 2 things worth sayin' about Evelyn Waugh. # 1 - His mother gave him a girl's name! No wonder he had problems. # 2 - He's the only famous author whose surname is an ape yell. It's the kind of thing you yell when you're shocked, startled, and not too happy about a situation. WAUGH!!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 13 Nov 05 - 02:32 PM He wrote some pretty good stuff, for all that. I don't actually think there are any men's names which aren't liable to be put into service as girls' names. And isn't "WAUGH!" more the kind of utterance that suggest rather unseemly exhuberance rather than anything? Sort of Sun-reader Page Three stuff (I won't give a blue clicky for that, but Google Page Three + UK to clarify the reference.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: Peace Date: 13 Nov 05 - 07:02 PM Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! RIGHT, just like St Patrick. |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: Bob Bolton Date: 14 Nov 05 - 02:34 AM G'day Peace, Ah yes ... dear old St Paddy - the only "Irishman" vehemently claimed by the Welsh, Scots ... and the French! (The English probably have just as good a claim, but less inclination.) Regard(les)s, Bob |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: Peace Date: 14 Nov 05 - 02:39 AM LOL Once yer famous, everyone wants ya to have been born somewhere or other--when you already have been. It's a confusing world we live in. |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: Paul Burke Date: 14 Nov 05 - 03:47 AM The English have NO claim on St Pat. The Strathclyde Britons probably do, and he was quite likely from Workington. Didn't Winston Churchill say "better wor Waugh than George Or" (well)? |

Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: greg stephens Date: 14 Nov 05 - 07:15 AM St Patrick born in Workington? What complete bollocks. Every schoolboy knows he was born in Whtehaven. |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: Paul Burke Date: 14 Nov 05 - 07:22 AM Sorry, I got it wrong, he got a free transfer to Workington later. One of the greatest front rows of all time, St Pat, St Columba and St Ciaran. BVM at stand off, St John the Baptist at loose forward. Workington IS in England (sort of). It wasn't though. |

Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: GUEST,mick Date: 14 Nov 05 - 07:45 AM Georgian qs Is there a possibility that, if Eveylyn was born in Ireland but his parents were living in London , they may have registered his birthplace as London ? The thought that Ireland's Own may have been mistaken is just too much of an appalling vista - please check your facts. |
Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: gnomad Date: 14 Nov 05 - 08:10 AM Silly info time: EW's first wife was also called Evelyn, now that could be confusing. Try googling "he Evelyn and she Evelyn", which is supposedly how they were known to some of their circle. (I don't know whether SHE was Irish) |

Subject: RE: BS: Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! From: Fergie Date: 14 Nov 05 - 08:50 PM Please lets not use this thread as excuse for homophobia. Evelyn Waugh was in his day considered to be the quintessential uppermiddleclass English gentleman. Just the idea that he was born in Ireland is the epitomy of ironic humour. It scarcely bears thinking about. Fergus |
