Just read today in Ireland's Own that Evelyn Waugh is Irish ! I cannot find any information to support this. Maybe I'm wrong can anyone shed light on this ?

Evelyn Waugh was born in London into a comfortable middle-class family. Catherine (Raban) Waugh, his mother, was born in India, but grew up in England. Evelyn had a better relationship with her than with his his father, Arthur Waugh (1866-1943), a publisher and literary critic, who preferred Evelyn's older brother Alec. Waugh was educated at Lancing College, Sussex, and at Hertford College, Oxford, where he read modern history. For his disappointment, the behavior of the upper-class student was not especially sophisticated - it was savage and amoral, and at Lancing College Waugh was was bullied by his classmates. Later he returned to his experiences in his novels. His college years Waugh spent in drinking. His brother Alec had an homosexual relationship at the Sherborn College, and was dismissed. Alec Waugh wrote an autobiographical book of the event, which in practice had prevented Evelyn from entering the same college. After studying in London at Heatherley's Art School and working for a short time as a schoolmaster at Arnold House in North Wales, Waugh devoted himself to writing.

Place:   London, England
Parents:
Father: Arthur Waugh
Mother: Catherine Charlotte Raban

It would be so ironic if he was born in Ireland
Does Ireland's Own give a definitive date or County or parish or locality?

I don't actually think there are any men's names which aren't liable to be put into service as girls' names.

And isn't "WAUGH!" more the kind of utterance that suggest rather unseemly exhuberance rather than anything? Sort of Sun-reader Page Three stuff (I won't give a blue clicky for that, but Google Page Three + UK to clarify the reference.)

Sorry, I got it wrong, he got a free transfer to Workington later. One of the greatest front rows of all time, St Pat, St Columba and St Ciaran. BVM at stand off, St John the Baptist at loose forward.

Workington IS in England (sort of). It wasn't though.

Georgian qs Is there a possibility that, if Eveylyn was born in Ireland but his parents were living in London , they may have registered his birthplace as London ? The thought that Ireland's Own may have been mistaken is just too much of an appalling vista - please check your facts.

Silly info time: EW's first wife was also called Evelyn, now that could be confusing. Try googling "he Evelyn and she Evelyn", which is supposedly how they were known to some of their circle.

Please lets not use this thread as excuse for homophobia. Evelyn Waugh was in his day considered to be the quintessential uppermiddleclass English gentleman. Just the idea that he was born in Ireland is the epitomy of ironic humour. It scarcely bears thinking about.
