Subject: Lyr Add: I LOVE LITTLE WILLIE From: GUEST,Amy Date: 27 Nov 05 - 12:33 PM Here is a version of Little Willie that my Mother-in-law's grandmother taught her. It was my mil's first harmonica tune (at age 11). Her grandmother's first harmonica song was a song that had just come out called "Poor Old Jesse James" ;-) Searched the DT for this Little Willie and couldn't locate it, so thought I'd add it here. I Love Little Willie I love little Willie, I do Ma-ma I love little Willie, I do ha-ha I love little Willie, but don't ya tell Papa For he won't like it, he won't Ma-ma Last night he kissed me, he did Ma-ma Last night he kissed me, he did ha-ha Last night he kissed me, but don't ya tell Papa For he won't like it, he won't Ma-ma He said, he would marry, he did Ma-ma He said, he would marry, he did ha-ha He said, he would marry, but don't ya tell Papa Cause he will stop it, he will Ma-ma O, now we are married, we are Ma-ma O, now we are married, we are ha-ha O, now we are married, an' you can tell Papa Cause how can he help it, how can he Ma-ma |
Subject: I Love Little Willie From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Nov 05 - 11:50 PM I moved Amy's "Love Little Willie" here because it's certainly not the same song as Little Willie. Here's the Traditional Ballad Index entry on this song: DESCRIPTION: "I love Little Willie, I do, mama, I love Little Willie, But don't you tell Pa! For he wouldn't like it, you know, mama." Similarly: "He wrote me a letter," "He gave me a ring," "And now we are married," "We fuss and we scratch." Boit has a black four-year old sing this song at a Churchill County [fictional? apparently in Georgia or Alabama] school "exhibition." - BS Roud splits off Boette's "I'm Going to Get Married" as a separate song (#7512), but the only difference I can see is that it doesn't mention Willie. - RBW Last updated in version 4.3 File: R382 Go to the Ballad Search form Go to the Ballad Index Instructions The Ballad Index Copyright 2020 by Robert B. Subject: Lyr Add: I LOVE LITTLE WILLIE From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Nov 05 - 05:58 PM Here's the version from Lomax, American Ballads and Folk Songs (1934). Music and words from Bess Brown Lomax. I Love Little Willie I love little Willie, I do, Mama. I love little Willie, tra, la, la, la. I love little Willie, but don't tell Pa, For he mightn't like it, Mama, Mama. He told me he loved me, he did, Mama, He told me he loved me, tra, la, la, la. He told me he loved me, but don't tell Pa, For he mightn't like it, Mama, Mama. And now we are married, Mama, Mama. And now we are married, tra, la, la, la. And now we are married, now you can tell Pa, For he's got to like it, Mama, Mama. The tune is very familiar, but I can't tell what other words go to it. Anybody know?

Subject: RE: ADD: I Love Little Willie From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Nov 05 - 09:21 PM How did this one work out then? Was this a concert piece, a marital aid....... you wouldn't believe the trouble I have getting even the most inoffensive little songs on the airwaves. I haven't as yet written one with that title. |

Subject: RE: ADD: I Love Little Willie From: Big Al Whittle Date: 29 Nov 05 - 04:39 AM well it would brighten up some of my more intimate moments, and I think it provides sound historical reasons as to why the Campbells were coming. |
