Subject: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Margo Date: 16 Jan 99 - 11:57 AM Hi folks! I am composing some children's songs but would like to listen to traditional children's music of the Celtic genre. Names of artists and recordings would be helpful. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: schmuze (inactive) Date: 16 Jan 99 - 03:02 PM How about The Garten Mother's Lullaby, The Corries on "Strings and Things" There's a very old album if you can get hold of it called Glasgow Street songs by Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor, it really is very old but it has some fine children's songs on it such as "Ye cannae shover yer grannie off a bus"! Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Will (inactive) Date: 19 Jan 99 - 11:45 AM For new, fun songs, it's worth looking for tapes by Tom Pease (your library might have some). We have been particularly fond of "I'm gonna reach" and "Boogie! Boogie! Boogie!". I've ordered from Tomorrow River Music in Madison, Wisconsin (Box 165, 53701; phone: 608 423-3095). There are also lots of good books of kids songs (and even more mediocre books, but that goes with the territory). Again, a library is likely to have a few. I've used Milton Okun's "Giant book of children's songs" as a decent compendium of middle of the road american stuff (five, count them, five, versions of "Puff"), which I got from Elderly Instruments, in Lansing, Michigan. I would be interested in any suggestions that people have about books of kids songs from countries other than the U.S. |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Will (inactive) Date: 19 Jan 99 - 11:49 AM arghh .. sorry for the drift, Margarita, I missed the specific request for Celtic songs. I would be interested in suggestions about collections. |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Bert Date: 19 Jan 99 - 11:54 AM Here is a site worth looking at. Not traditional but has some good stuff. |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Harald Date: 19 Jan 99 - 11:56 AM Golden Bough issued a CD called "Celtic Songs For Children" or s.th. like that. Though the songs are not authentical neither do they sound so, the CD is worth listening to. We now have two songs from it in our repertoire, after playing them just for fun and now having requests every time on stage. |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Jan 99 - 02:08 PM Give a German a word, and he'll find a way to abbreviate it into something incomprehensible. Gosh, Harald, that's awesome.... |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Harald Date: 22 Jan 99 - 12:26 PM Don´t worry, Joe. I´m not singing like that ! |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: innovate@ior.com Date: 22 Jan 99 - 01:37 PM Here is a site you may find useful. They have lots of kids stuff and you should be able to get some international flavor also. Hope this helps. Tom (sorry, no fancy handle) |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Sandy Paton Date: 22 Jan 99 - 03:09 PM You might want to look at Peter and Iona Opie's wonderful book The Lore and Language of School Children (Oxford University Press). Should be available in your library. Also, Ewan MacColl and Dominic Behan traded kids' street songs on a Folkways album 'way back when. Should be available from Smithsonian/Folkways, on cassette, at least. Sandy |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Sandy Paton Date: 22 Jan 99 - 07:51 PM The record I referred to in the above post is titled The Singing Streets, Childhood Memories of Ireland and Scotland (Folkways FW 8501). I note that it was released "by arrangement with Topic Records, England," so it may also be available from them. The entire Folkways catalog, however, is available in one format or another from Smithsonian/Folkways. Look 'em up on the Web. Sandy |

Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: GUEST,Jody Date: 01 Feb 00 - 02:25 PM For Scottish children's songs, The Singing Kettle (Celia and Artie Fisher) has many CDs and tapes with traditional songs. |

Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: GeorgeH Date: 03 Feb 00 - 08:37 AM There's been a thread on this topic running over on uk.music.folk . . . for traditional material the recommendation is certainly "The singing kettle". For more modern "stuff" the best has not yet surfaced here; for those with any "social" concern the definitive recording of songs for children has to be Roy Bailey's "Why does it have to be me" (I posted contact/ordering info. for Roy in the "good modern folkies" thread). While for good songs, good tunes and much enjoyment Hilary James and Simon Mayor's "Musical Mystery Tour" is VERY hard to beat - my 19 year old daughter STILL occasionally launches into the songs she picked up from it . . For details see: http://www.childrensmusic.co.uk As for printed sources, Peggy Seeger & Ewan MacColl's "Singing Island" includes a short but excellent section of Children's Songs. G. |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Margo Date: 03 Feb 00 - 02:50 PM Gosh this is nice that my thread has resurfaced after a year! I am very pleased to get your recommendations. Looks like I'll be buying some more CD's. My son likes Pete Seeger's Animal CD (Birds, Beasts and others, I can't remember the exact title.) I perform for his preschool and have plans to record some children's CD's myself. Thanks, Margo |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 03 Feb 00 - 08:05 PM Best children's record I've ever come across was Roy Bailey (with Val Bailey, and Leon Rosselsson) "Oats and Beans and Kangaroos", issued by Fontana many many years ago (SFL13061 859028 FZY). It's got Why Does it Have to be Me, and lots more, including a wonderful Three Ravens (the non-cynical version). |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: GUEST, - Áine's Vocal Chords Date: 03 Feb 00 - 08:29 PM Talk to my host. She does birthday parties. Kid's seem to prefer her larnoscopy versions, over those using her original voice. |

Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: GUEST,John B Date: 03 Feb 00 - 10:01 PM I am forever looking through used book stores for books of printed songs. Children's songs, especially from old school books, are often available. I also recommend looking at Hilary James and Simon Mayor who did lots of stuff for children on BBC. They are esay to find on the web by almost any search engine. |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Sorcha Date: 03 Feb 00 - 10:29 PM Neither of mine ever cared of it was "Kid Music" or not, just give 'em some of the real thing, you'll be suprised at how much of it they actually get. My daughter knew about the Easter Rising before she was 10--whose fault is THAT? |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Marymac90 Date: 04 Feb 00 - 12:13 PM There is a Children's Music Network, loosely affiliated with the People's Music Network that I have posted about here. I was looking for an email address of someone directly concerned, but all I could come up with were some members of PMN. Try asking them for the info. If they can't, I'll bet they know who can-maybe Eric Levine? Steve Suffet, suffet@worldnet.att.net Ellen Davidson, davidsoe@newschool.edu Mary McCaffrey |
Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Amos Date: 04 Feb 00 - 12:25 PM http://www.kididdles.com/mouseum/lullabies.html has children's lullabies, and the site around it has many other children's tunes.

Subject: RE: I'm looking for CHILDREN'S MUSIC From: Margo Date: 04 Feb 00 - 02:12 PM Sorcha, I know what you mean. The songs I am writing use Robert Louis Stevenson poems, but I am intending for it to be a family album, one that the grown ups don't mind having on as well. Inspiration from Scottish trad. music using trad. instrumentation. Margo |
