BLACK SABBATH lyrics - "Blow On A Jug"

Blow on a Jug
Everybody come on - blow on a jug
Be like me and blow on a jug
I want you to blow on a jug
Everybody begin - blow on a jug

If that's the sort of jugs you are talking about, then you are in reference to a bit of crockery that might have had an ever-diminishing amount of whiskey in it. Blowing in it just right produces a pleasant, rythmic bass line accompaniment to bouncy bluegrass, country, or "jug band" music.

BTW, the pitch can be adjusted by "adjusting" the amount of liquid in it or, to some degree, by overblowing. The latter is a way of producing more than one note from a single jug.

Not sure about that, Janine - I know of sticky-out ears (like Prince Charles') being referred to as "jug ears", but that's all

The Jug was a type of airplane, the P-47 Thunderbolt, WWII's heaviest single-seat fighter plane. The British or someone had informally named it the "Juggernaught", which the pilots then shortened to just "Jug". These planes served with great distinction from '43 through '45, and caused severe headaches to the Axis. It's not exactly a beautiful looking plane, but it is impressive looking. Very powerful and heavily armed. Comes in earlier fastback version, and later bubble canopy. Many of these Jugs served after the war in various air forces of smaller countries, specially in South America.

And I could be wrong too, Janine. The beauty of language is in its variability.

Can also refer to ladies' bosooms - though I've no idea where the term comes from, when applied! "By 'eck lass, them's big jugs!" was an oft heard phrase on last bus out of Hartlepool bus station!

By coincidence, I just finished reading the lyrics of The Rabbit Trapper's Song, where the last three lines are,

"There's a shy and dinkum girlie
Lets me juggle with the cream cans
As she writes cheques out for me."

Cream cans = cream jugs, in a matching pair, as concertina ceol said.

Rude but colorful expression....

Ask a jug band?

Kitty

PS I once tried sending an e-mail to a schoolteacher friend with the title "Back in the jug agane" (after Molesworth) and apparently it was suppressed because of the inclusion of a rude word ("jug").

In petroleum exploration by seismicity, recording devices set at intervals along a line to a central receiver, measuring intensity of the return at points along the line from a shock wave causated by detonation of an explosive device.

'Jug' often used for jail in N. Am.
Cartoonists often draw the G. W. with jug ears...

See the thread on 'jars' as in "lets drink a jar or two.' I put a link there to a museum photo of a jar- which was a small liquor jug, abong other things. Both words have many meanings.

Also, the sound a Nightingale makes.

In case anyone cares, jug probably comes from the name Jug, a diminutive of Judy, Joan and Jenny, First noted in the 16th Century.

Hey Peace

If the answer you gave is correct shouldn't the question read "What is jugs?" Grammatically challenged, inquiring minds want to know.

LAMPS.
HEADLIGHTS.
KNOCKERS.

"Jugs":- A term used for citizens of Yugoslavia (whan such a place existed), derived from the 'local' spelling (on stamps etc.)

Btw. In "Mother, Jugs and Speed", wasn't Racquel Welch (sp?) "Jugs"?
