Subject: Lyr Add: WALKIN' IN THE SUN (J Barry via P Sledge) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 14 - 07:01 PM WALKIN' IN THE SUN Written by Jeff Barry Recorded by Percy Sledge on "I'll be Your Everything" (1974) Things have been goin' wrong long enough to know ev'rything is right. Been walkin' in the dark long enough to know I've fin'lly seen the light. Been losing long enough to know when I've fin'lly won, And even a blind man can tell when he's walkin' in the sun. I've cried enough tears to know this feeling called a smile. I've been bottom-rung long enough to know when I'm doin' it in style. Been runnin' long enough to know there's no more need to run, Lord, and even a blind man can tell when he's walkin' in the sun. Well, the wind is at my back and I'm sailing on a ship that's overdue. Well, I've blown so many chances and I ain't gonna blow this one with you. Seen enough bad times to know good times have begun, And even a blind man can tell when he's walkin' in the sun. [Repeat last line and fade.] Also recorded by B. B. King on "King Size" Fink on "Sort of Revolution" Glen Campbell on "Walkin' in the Sun" Janiva Magness on "The Devil is an Angel Too" Laslo Cameo on "2nd Avenue Serenade" Rufus & Chaka Khan on "Rags to Rufus" The Walker Brothers on "No Regrets" |

Just about any 4-Tops songs, particularly "Reach Out"; The Temps with Davy Ruffin. I know were going waaaay back now. EW&F--man their horn section rocked and they're making a comeback of sorts thanks to Target commercials--I think there must be 3 EW&F songs, plus a redux of "September" changed to "December"-crass commercialism to be sure, but I loved that little guitar intro on that one. Percy Sledge-When a Man Loves a Wo-mannnn. Holy crap. The man bled soul; That Philly sound with the Delphonics and the high falsetto leads. Makes ya wanna weep. |

Subject: RE: Favorite pre-1980s R&B/Soul Records From: Cluin Date: 16 Dec 05 - 05:12 AM Azizi, Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" was written by Ike Turner (Brenston was a player and singer in Ike's band). It was also claimed by Sam Phillips and others to be the first rock `n' roll record. He recorded it in 1951 and used the profits from it to start Sun Records. Because of it Ike Turner claimed to have birthed rock 'n' roll, or at least midwifed it. More info here. |

Subject: RE: Favorite pre-1980s R&B/Soul Records From: Richard Bridge Date: 14 Dec 05 - 06:14 PM Walkin in the sand might have been the Crystals too. Definitely produced by Phil Spector. Surprised to see Curtis Mayfield wrote Mama Didn't lie, but true enough he did. DtG, I think the convention of naming has indeed changed. How could anyone from the old days think of the Appleton sisters as RnB? I mostly hated the schmaltzy stuff, but Wherever I hang my Hat was a disco classic. I really preferred stuff on the race music side rather than most of the commercial product. Despite this, Goin' to a-go-go was tasty. Am I allowed early Small Faces too? E too D off their first album was great (I think ripping off a Sam Cooke riff) but All or Nothing was a wonderful song. |
Subject: RE: Favorite pre-1980s R&B/Soul Records From: Dave the Gnome Date: 14 Dec 05 - 05:21 PM Anything whatsoever by Sam Cooke! Could do no wrong in my eyes. Must say I was never one for Aretha, too much note holding and bending for my taste but I could listen to some of her more sedate stuff. Otis always struck the right note for me. I guess I was generaly more into Motown than Atlantic with the Temptations and Four Tops being up there with my all time greats. Suppose that's what comes of being a mid-teen mod in the late 60's ;-) What has become of Soul and R&B today though? Not wanting to sound like my Dad but it ain't as good as it used to be:-D Or has the definition changed? Listen to todays R&B chart and you will see what I mean! Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Favorite pre-1980s R&B/Soul Records From: Merritt Date: 14 Dec 05 - 04:30 PM I've always liked some of the schmaltzier R & B ballads, but never liked the arrangements much. Last couple of years I've been arranging these sorts of songs for fingerstyle guitar in open D or open G - capo around to find a key to suit my voice. I think they sound cool stripped down like this. Some come from Motown; others from Philly or New Orleans. Off top of head here're some examples: Ooh-we-ooh, Baby, Baby - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Medley: What's Going On/Mercy, Mercy Me - Marvin Gaye Break Up To Make Up - Stylistics (works as a waltz!) Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home) - Marvin Gaye Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing - Gaye/Terrel Since I Met You, Baby - Ivory Joe Hunter You Really Gotta Hold On Me - SR & The Miracles Rainy Night in Georgia - Brook Benton Best, - Merritt |

Subject: RE: Favorite pre-1980s R&B/Soul Records From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 13 Dec 05 - 08:02 PM Hey, Azizi: You're in my neighborhood now :-) If this list is pre-1980, Luther Vandross's first top 40 hit was Never Too Much, which hit the top 40 in November of 1981. (The Gospel Messengers sang for Luther Vandross once by the way, but he never sang for us..) You'd probably find the Clovers and the Costers listed as "doo wop" (Dumb term) rather than soul. Let's Stay Together by Al Green was a #1 R&B hit in 1971 and certainly should be on the list. Maybe you overlooked it. My list of favorite pre-1980 R&B and Soul hits is much longer than 100. Jerry |
Subject: Favorite pre-1980s R&B/Soul Records From: Azizi Date: 13 Dec 05 - 07:47 PM So maybe it's not folk music [in the strictest sense of that term], but I want to take this opportunity to say that mid 20th century R&B/Soul music rocks! I came across this link to the 100 Greatest 'Classic' R&B/Soul Songs of the 1950s-1970s: 100 Greatest Classic R&B/Soul Songs The criteria given for this selection is "R&B Soul songs - Chosen for their impact, influence and quality in R&B from 1950-1979 (excluding songs with a clearly pop slant). - - Ballads have their own list" Actually that site lists 175 songs. Here's the first 25 songs on that list: 1. Respect - Aretha Franklin 2. I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye 3. (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding 4. What'd I Say - Ray Charles 5. Maybellene - Chuck Berry 6. Papa's Got A Brand New Bag - James Brown 7. Money Honey - Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters 8. Shake, Rattle, & Roll - Big Joe Turner 9. My Girl - The Temptations 10. Long Tall Sally - Little Richard 11. In The Midnight Hour - Wilson Pickett 12. Blueberry Hill - Fats Domino 13. Sixty Minute Man - The Dominoes 14. Everyday People - Sly & The Family Stone 15. Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Lloyd Price 16. Heat Wave - Martha & The Vandellas 17. One Nation Under A Groove - Parliment Funkadelic 18. Reach Out, I'll Be There - The Four Tops 19. It's Your Thing - The Isley Brothers 20. Rocket 88 - Jackie Brenston 21. The Tracks Of My Tears - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles 22. Jungle Boogie - Kool & The Gang 23. Baby Love - The Supremes 24. Why Do Fools Fall In Love? - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers 25. Shining Star - Earth, Wind & Fire -snip- Not that it matters, but I know every one of those songs except # 13 & #20. There's bound to be disagreement about a list like this. Not to be nitpicky, but I'd rank #11 "In The Midnight Hour" higher up on the list. And speaking of Wilson Picket, I don't see the song "Land of A Thousand Dances" on that list, or but then again, I broke my reading glasses and can't see that well without them. But here's what I wanna know-where's Al Green's and Luther Vandross's songs? Oh maybe they're in the Ballads list. And did I miss The Shirelle's "Tonight's The Night", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", and "Mama Said There'll Be Days Like This"? Why isn't Stevie Wonder's "Fingertips" on that list or Aretha's "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You}" or The Clover's "Love Potion # 9"? And where's The Coasters' "Charlie Brown", "Little Egypt" and "On Broadway" ??? Those are just some of the songs that come to my mind that I think shoulda been on that list. What about you? Do you have any favorite pre-1980's R&B/Soul songs? What songs should have been on that list and what songs shoulda been left off of it? |
