Today, in a rare, live broadcast of his weekly address, Bush excoriated Feingold and his colleagues for blocking renewal of the Patriot Act and (no kidding, this is a direct quote):

"I run the war on terror, Congress does not."

In his immediate reaction to the president's speech, Sen. Russ Feingold openly accused the president of breaking the law by authorizing the NSA spy program. He further accused the president of acting like a king. He said the congressional authorization given to the president after September 11 never contemplated wiretapping and labeled the president's reliance on it as "absurd."

Feingold was out in the political wilderness on the national level in the immediate 9/11 aftermath, and during the propaganda campaign that lead up to the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

However, now that the truth is dribbling out (thanks to the crack US mainstream press) he is leading the center out of the morass.

He successfully shut down the Patriot Act vote. He is one of the most masterful senators at forging bi-partisan agreements. He has the pulse of that other America--the one that is increasingly uncomfortable with the takeover of the nation by fascist Christians and neo-con ideologues.

DougR will be eating crow in the coming years. The American public has seen that the emperor has no clothes, and he is fleecing them and their children too.

He talks a lot about "fighting terrorists" but I don't see much in his website about wanting to correct the problems that are causing people to become radicalized. In that way he reminds me a lot of GW Bush. Maybe I'll send him an e-mail and ask him about that.

Well, if he did not shut down the Patriot Act for it was renewed again at least temporarily. And it will be voted back in and quite frankly that is just fine with me. Undoubtably, some of it could get modified.

Guest, I'll take Fascist Christians over Fascist Islamics anyday. What's your choice here? Do you have the intelligence to choose one of the two? Obviously, like many here the hate of one American leader blinds you to the reality of how much we are hated by the radical elements of Islam, which is obvious once again to many, other than some of those that reside here.

Russ successfully forced a showdown with the Bush administration and the US House Republican majority, and won. His action forced the temporary extension (which is what he asked for originally, but was refused by the Republicans in the White House and Congress.

There are many parts of the Patriot Act that are fine. Many parts of it aren't. I have serious doubts if it will be renewed as quickly and easily as Monster Gibbon is suggesting--not in this climate where the Bush administration has been caught with their pants down breaking the law and spying on US citizens without court orders. I still can't fucking believe Bush came right on out and admitted committing a crime, but hey--nobody ever said the neo-cons and Bushies were rocket scientists.

A hard rain is gonna fall, and it ain't gonna be on the Democratic Party at this point, even though they are the true lame ducks swimming around the cesspool that is DC.
