Subject: BS: Boo Hoo! No pressie for me....
From: Nancy King
Date: 26 Dec 05 - 01:07 PM

Christmas was fine this year, and I got several very nice things, but I was disappointed that I got nothing from my Mudcat Secret Santa! I've been reasonably good this year (not to say perfect…), and I sent a package off to my Santee (which did arrive), but (*sigh*) no mysterious package for me.

Oh, THAT'S all right! I don't mind! I'll just sit here in the dark….

Maybe it will come tomorrow!

Still hoping,
Nancy

Take heart! Mudcat Secret Santa gifts are notoriously slow-moving, particularly if there's an ocean or two involved in the transit process. As soon as the postal service of the country of origin realizes it's a Mudcat gift, they secure the package to the back of a swimming hamster, toss it off the nearest wharf, and let nature take its course. Your gift may well arrive in July in a rather waterlogged state, but it will probably get there eventually.

I posted my santees present in November to America and it hasn't arrived. I'm a bit concerned that it hasn't arrived and I put a lot of thought and effort into it, not to mention that postage cost a fortune! I'm keeping my finger's crossed that it will still arrive.

May I respectfully suggest-- perhaps local addressees could be found for various regions, next year, who could receive and hold santees' gifts for their area. That way they could be sent EARLY and then reposted by the local recipient for timely arrival.

I sent my Santee, Teresa's present half way around the world to the correct address in Las Vegas (from Newcastle, Oz) and the Post Office there, in its infinite wisdom, sent it back saying my Santee didn't live there.

It came back to me a little worse for wear - did they stamp on it with their big rubber boots, and not their little rubber stamp?

Not only did I have to post it again but I had to replace a wind chime which was crushed. I had a terrible time finding another windchime, if you can believe that. I thought they were ubiquitous, like Christmas beetles in December, until I desperately needed one. I found a lovely selection in one of my favourite shops, which some naughtly little elf had spent a considerable amount of time tangling up, so none of them were usable.

I finally found a nice one, re-packaged everything and sent it off again. I did keep my Santee informed about the delays though. She was very nice about it all.

Quite true -- it will be nice to have a surprise arriving in the mail long after all the seasonal festivities have died down. I'll keep the faith for a while yet.

I'm sure glad my outgoing package didn't come back broken and marked undeliverable! That would take some of the joy out of this game!

Gazing hopefully out to sea,
Nancy

LOL, Bee-dubya-ell and gnu!

Rudolph was on the terrorist watch list and Santa had to check all of his packages with Homeland Security before he was cleared to fly over US airspace. Perhaps that would explain the delay?:->

If you believe in it, it will come... (a poor paraphrase from the Kevin Costner movie about a baseball diamond.)

I put out the SS info as early as I dare, so's people can use the cheaper postal options, but someone always complains that it's too early..... I guess there is just no pleasing some people.....

And I'd like to repeat, I'm not responsible for what the assorted post offices do to parcels!

I sent a non-Christmas related envelope to a Mudcatter in Australia back in Early November--or maybe late October. It contained some articles (concerning a disorder that some people have) and CD. It ain't there YET. If he reads this, please send me your personal mailing info again and I will get another CD off to you. I think I may have sent it via ground transportatio--which I though would be a truck to Vancouver and a plane to OZ. Looks like it meant a boat to OZ.

my first Secret Santa parcel (from Giac) arrived Feb just before my birthday; my second one (from Micca) was the first received in it's year; I've forgotten when my 3rd arrived, and this year's parcel from KimC arrived before Christmas.

One year a parcel was RTS - my Santee moved after submitting her details (oops)! And I had to airmail it again - at least the US post office sent it back by airmail, what if they had sent it seamail?? We'd still be waiting.

Just remembered I'm still awaiting a small parcel from Charley Noble & JudyB. And something from my sister, probably a cheque to add to my sister-in-law's chq.

pressie receiving season continues!!

Well -

The whole exercise has been a bit pointless this year. I don't really mind about the presents - I'm sure something will turn up eventually, and if not . . . well, I'm no worse off than I was.

My main reason for signing up for this is the pre-postage banter on the Silly Secret Santa thread, the clues and the guessing. This year, my Santa made just the one late post, saying nothing much except that s/he was going to send something. My santee didn't respond to any of my anonymous posts, so I just gave up on the whole thing.

Don't know if I'll bother next time.

Happy New Year, everybody.

Happy New Year, Andrew & Carol

I love the hints & clues & have felt so inadequate in the past cos words are not my thing. My first Santa was Giac whose family teased & tormented each other & she was in her element & I had no idea who Santa was or where Santa lived. All I could offer my cat-collecting santa that year was one poem about cats I remembered from my childhood.

This year I tried to write a piece of bad poetry cos CapriUni was my santa & she is a fantastic writer. It took forever to write the piece & fortunately I found the Bad Poetry generator & had a ball after that.

Mudcat has been down a lot in the last few months & someone thought that might have affected the hints thread, but maybe not.

I got my present, which was here when I got back from the UK yesterday.

I'm no wiser as to my Santa's Mudcat name but must thank Nicky Boak for the puzzle, which will drive all of us mad, the book of sci-fi stories which I am looking forward to reading and the Kendal Mint Cake, one of my favourite sweets for many years. I gave a very small piece to Kendall who wasn't keen (more for me) and to SINSULL, who loved it and will have to get more supplies sent out by my daughter at some time. I'd forgotten how minty that stuff tasted. Sublime!

I visited Rhymin' Simon on Boxing day, again good conversation & songs. Folks were in his pool & a good time was had.

Sorry I didn't post sooner, but I've been overseas and got it in the first post I could arrange after landing. Still - I would have thought it would have been there long before now ...

NEWS FLASH!

YAY!!! My pressie was in my mailbox when I got home from work tonight! Thank you, Secret Santa -- and I hope you're not TOO stressed!

The package has an Ontario return address and the name "PJS Thomas," but I've not yet been able to figure out your Mudcat name! I'll keep trying, but there aren't many clues I can decipher, except that you've traveled to Wales, and I suspect you're female!

Sorry for whining about the late arrival -- I guess the Postal Elves were stressed too!

Anyhow, PJS, thanks so much for the celtic knot cross-stitch kit, the very interesting book about samplers, and the cassette of Welsh music (with album notes in both English and Welsh), which I will listen to tomorrow.

And for those of you who still have not received your gifties -- keep the faith!

Gratefully,

Mailing packages between Canada and the U.S. can be very slow, because the U.S. reserves the right to open and inspect it. Pain in the ass, if you ask me. The real threat is going to come through some other way than in the mail.

Nancy

Not here either.

I just got a parcel of jigsaw puzzles from America. (Can't get the sort I like here). It was opened by the Quarantine department because the word "Halloween" was in the title of one of them - mentioned on the declaration sheet. There was a note to say nothing was taken out but a glossy pamphlet told me I should tell my friends, overseas, that "items for cultural events" could well be banned from entry in Aus. Among the examples they listed were "pumpkins and straw dolls."

I sure hope my Secret Santa hasn't tried to send me a pumpkin. Cheers, Joy

Just got another parcel from America. A book from a second-hand book shop. This time the envelope had been slashed open across the name and address. It had been stuck back together so that the name was completely obscured and the only part left of the address was the post code. Somehow it found its way to me because the local post office staff know about my American connections and they made a clever guess.
Hooray for old-fashioned rural service. Cheers, Joy

Well I was going to say Boo Hoo but as I left for work this morning a parcel from Australia arrived

Thank you Jenny.

CD looks good, calendar will be useful, chocs and sweetie things always acceptable.

Now what shall I do with the vegimite dip thing?

The cuddly Rainbow Lorrikeet (with twittering belly) I shall pin to my shoulder at next Silly Songs night.

Vegemite dip--that's a compost biological activity starter, right? :)

Well Dave, it's an Aussie icon and all, and far superior to those other 'mites, so I thort you might like to see one of the things we do with it here. Kids take them to school for snacks and scoop bits out with their little biccies. If you don't fancy having it that way, it makes a good stock for soups and stews etc - or maybe if you want to paint something brown..........??

At least it sounds like customs didn't raid the box. I was a bit worried about the food items, so I wrapped them well.

I want a picture of you wearing the rainbow lorikeet!

Jenny

Dave, I have vegemite on toast almost every morning for breakfast. I also put teaspoons of it in things like casserole instead of stock cubes. A lunch thing that I like is toast with vegemite on it, topped with mixed cottage cheese and hummus, a grinding of pepper and finished with slices of tomato and red pepper and a sprinkling of chopped parsley. Lovely!

Actually, I think vegemite and tomato have a special affinity for each other. They make the most boring diet biscuit taste interesting!

But you need to put it between crackers with holes in them so that when you squash them together little brown worms pop out.
As for actually eating it I'm with SRS.
Cheers, Joy

Hi Vegimite fans.

I have known about the stuff for years but never actually got round to trying it.

I don't like marmite type stuff on its own but as a dollop of stuff in stews casseroles etc it's fine. Therefore next time I put my chefs hat and apron on I'll try the V-mite.

I'll have the biccies with cheese afterwards (with a glass of port of course).

Jenny I'll see what I can do about the photo (avec Keet). I'll have to do a deal with someone who has a digicam and knows how to post it to where you can see it.

Incidentally Jenny I have now had a chance to play the CD - great stuff and just the sort of thing I like.

Hi Dave. Glad you like the CD. I thought it might be your kind of stuff!

As for the vegemite - be brave. Before you put it all in the cooking, try some on toast. It tastes different from marmite. As Ford Prefect in the Hitchhikers Guide said, "Your mouth will love you for the rest of your life!"

OK friends I'm persuaded!

I'll give the vegimite a go when I get home to-night. I'm working till 18:00 then off to the theatre (after the Italian Restaurant) so it will be quite late.

Won't give me bad dreams will it?

Dave

Vegemite is Good Stuff & therefore can't give you bad dreams.

Dunno what Vegimite might do, tho, ya never know.

Put lots of butter on your bread or bikkie, then a scrape of Vegemite (yum) lovely buttery/slightly salty taste.

Or you could try my sister's way (scrape of butter & thick layer of Vegemite), but then she is an addict.

She's been living overseas in Nigeria & Kuwait for the past 10 years & I've always wondered what customs/quarantine folks think when this oil executive's wife comes out of Business Class with several giant (5 kilo?) jars of Vegemite each year.

I've had my tiny jar of Vegemite for several years now.

Thank you Sandra your suggestion noted.

An Aus. collegue has just passed by and tells me that V-mite can be bought in the UK but it is a lot more expensive than it is over there.

Seems we pay for a very small jar what you pay for a huge jar.

I suspect that this may not be a life changing experience (on economic grounds if no other)

Dave

When I was first in England, you could only buy vegemite in shops around Australia House in London. Nowadays you can buy it in supermarkets but it is LOTS dearer than in Oz. I pay £1.99 a little jar in Tesco. When we were last in Australia, we brought home a 1kg jar which was cheaper than my little jars.

In the 70s when I was doing the Aussie tourist thing and hitching around Britain and Europe and staying in Youth Hostels, you could always spot the Aussies in the dining room at breakfast time cos all the jars of vegemite would appear out of their packs.

Love Lynne

Sorry folks you may now have your thread back.

I'm like Dave's Wife though. I don't feel deprived. A lovely hand-crafted Birthday gift arrived the other day from Sandra of Sydney. Cheers, Joy

And I'm really irked because I went to a lot of trouble to choose something RAT-W would like and mail it on time. It clearly slipped through a chasm somewhere between Canada Post and the Royal Mail.

I guess it may possibly still turn up Charmion. My SS also said they were posting theirs and that it would be worth waiting for. It seems to me that the postal service is gooing downhill fast. Not only did a lot of the pressies not reach their destination, but I've heard of some that were sent back damaged. When you consider how few of us there are, the percentage of non-delivery or damage is pretty high

Love Lynne

I didn't get any presents at Christmas, nor my birthday 12/20. My son is the only one on whom I could rely for a gift, but now that he's in college, it is no big deal. (I must say, though, that mudcatter bbc has been my faithful Christmas elf.)
