Subject: Tech: CD Player No Longer Recognizes MP3s From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 07 Jan 06 - 09:23 PM About 4 weeks ago, I recently purchases a new CD Player, the Sharp MP-130 Microsystem. I have been using it to play regular CDs that I have purchased as well as MP3 files that I have downloaded from the internet in MP3 format and burnt on to a CD. Suddenly tonight, the player no longer recognizes the MP3 discs that I have burnt. The message flashing on the screen reads "no disc". I took the disc out and tried it in my old Sony player and it works fine. I then tried some of the other MP3 discs that I have with the same results. Can anybody diagnose this problem for me ? I could undersand if the player would not recognize the discs to begin with but this is not the case. Why would it stop recognizing the very same discs that it has played regularly for the past month ? SOL ZELLER |

Subject: RE: Tech: CD Player No Longer Recognizes MP3s From: GUEST Date: 07 Jan 06 - 09:32 PM I should visit the manufacturer's website if I were you, then contact an appropriate technical support forum if you can't find any useful information via google. |

Subject: RE: Tech: CD Player No Longer Recognizes MP3s From: Tootler Date: 08 Jan 06 - 02:42 PM As its only 4 weeks old, it should still be covered by the guarantee so you should be able to get a replacement. How you handle that will depend on which country you are in, but if it the UK, take it back to the retailer you bought it from and he is obliged to give you a replacement or your money back. |

Subject: RE: Tech: CD Player No Longer Recognizes MP3s From: GUEST,Anonny Mouse Date: 08 Jan 06 - 02:53 PM Agreed with above comments on "RETURN IT." Make no sense whatsoever, minus a dirty lens, or some dirt lodged someplace-but then it wouldn't play "regular" CD's. What? Some built in "copyguard" that won't play a downloaded CD??? If I buy/lease a new car, that's one of the FIRST things I check--will it play something I've burned-whether a rip of CD's I own, or MP3's I've "sampled." I'd take the blighter back and get a new one, and another brand as well! |

Subject: RE: Tech: CD Player No Longer Recognizes MP3s From: Clinton Hammond Date: 08 Jan 06 - 05:35 PM Oh... are you sure what format of CDR it recognizes? It might not, for example play MP3s on a CDRW, but will on a CDR... |

Subject: RE: Tech: CD Player No Longer Recognizes MP3s From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 08 Jan 06 - 09:33 PM It stopped playing the same CDs that it used to play regularly, but only the MP3s. It still plays regular CDs both, those purchased new as well as those that I have copied from other CDs. SOL ZELLER |

Subject: RE: Tech: CD Player No Longer Recognizes MP3s From: Genie Date: 15 Jan 06 - 10:07 PM The mp3s that I have downloaded from iTunes are "Copy Protected" and you can only play them on 3 different computers at any one time. If you want to upload them to a new computer and play them on the internal CD player, you have to log onto iTunes and deauthorize one of the other computers, so it will no longer play that mp3. So far, though, if I burn these mp3s to CDs, they play just fine on boomboxes and on components-type CD players. No limit on how many "mix" discs I make, and even if I burn the mp3s to a disc as "data files," the mp3s still play on most CD players (except really early models). I'm wondering if possibly the really new generation of CD players might be designed to reject the "Copy Protected" mp3s that you purchase on line if you burn them to a CD. I'd think this would be problematic, since you're supposed to be legally allowed to make 3 copies (or at least 2) of an mp3 you buy from iTunes. If it gets to where you can't burn your own mixes of songs you've acquired legally, that'll be a real bummer. So I'm hoping you just have a defective CD player, instead of this being a harbinger of things to come. Genie |

Subject: RE: Tech: CD Player No Longer Recognizes MP3s From: JohnInKansas Date: 15 Jan 06 - 10:25 PM I'm not really into mp3, but not too long ago there was talk that at least one of the download sites was offering "limited play" downloads. You rent them for a specific period of time, (or number of plays?,) and when the time is up that tune ceases to be playable. I can see that a "timestamp" could be included in the downloaded file, but for it to have any meaning to a playback device the player would have to look for it, recognize it, and block the tune. Lack of personal interest prevented my following the status of this, but the warning was given that some download services are considering your payment as a "time limited rental" and not a purchase of the file. One would have to read the EULA for the download site to know, I suppose. John |
