Subject: RE: Song for Mother From: Beer Date: 18 Jan 06 - 09:43 AM You know, you could try and write your own song. I'm not very good but I worked on a tune for my mothers 80th. and it turned out not to bad. Mum actually loved it. I think more because I had composed it than any thing else. |

Subject: RE: Song for Mother From: GUEST,ClaireBear Date: 16 Jan 06 - 06:35 PM Complete sheet music for "My Sweetheart's a Man in the Moon" is in the Levy collection -- have you looked there? The collection in general is a magnificent resource for period pieces like what you're looking for. |
Subject: RE: Song for Mother From: dulcimer42 Date: 16 Jan 06 - 06:19 PM Thanks for all the great suggestions. Her name is Esther. If I could come up with something good for the E and S, I could do the rest of the M-o-t-h-e-r song......... I did locate one of her favorite songs, while she and Dad were courting: My Sweetheart's the Man in the Moon. I have the melody for the 2 verses; however, there is an intro before each verse, and I haven't been able to locate the melody for that. We'll probably use this one. Also, there's a song "That Wonderful Mother of Mine" which is a nice tribute. It dates back to the 40's. Neat thing about it is, I sang it at a Mother and Daughter Banquet about 50 years ago, and I know Mom remembers that. I might re-do it. |
Subject: RE: Song for Mother From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 11 Jan 06 - 05:59 AM All of the following are in the DT: When you and I were young, Maggie Lovely Agnes You are my sunshine Tell me why (the stars do shine) (this one's great in 2-part harmony) If your mother was born in 1916, check out sites online that list popular songs for specific years. I "googled" "popular songs from 1916" and got over 14 million hits! Good luck, and happy birthday to mom! My mom (The Survivor) is going to be 80 in May, and you've given me some inspiration- thanks! |
Subject: RE: Song for Mother From: SunnySister Date: 11 Jan 06 - 01:06 AM Dulcimer2, I used to sing many songs to my mom. The two that jump into my mind are "Mammie" and "Danny Boy." I used to get down on my knees and take her hand and sing as warmly as I could. I started singing those at an early age so it was something she was used to as I would try to cheer her up as well as a special "I love you" to her. I would have to say that you and your sister must think about this together. Think about what your mom loves, what memories you all share. Sometimes, a song can be a "mom" song without it being one that another person outside of your family would think of. What's important is the thought and emotion behind it. For example, "The Coat of Many Colors" was a song that held great signficance to my grandmother and my mom used to sing it to her. After my mom's death, my stepdad and I found another "mom" song- "I'll Be Seeing You." Congratulations to your mom- you're very lucky and from what you've written, she's lucky to have had such great children! :) --SunnySister |

Subject: Song for Mother From: dulcimer42 Date: 10 Jan 06 - 01:52 PM We're having a big celebration for Mama's 90th birthday. I want to sing a song for her.... It can be sentimental, funny, just so it's a song for a special mom. Any suggestions? Also, my sister and I used to sing duets when we were kids. This song doesn't have to be particularly about Mom, but what's a nice 2 part harmony tune that might be appropriate for the occasion? I know you Mudcatters can help. THANKS !! |
