Topsie

The stalk will eventually flower and produce seed in the form of bulbils, which are mini garlic bulbs. This is cut off in order for the plant to put more of it's growth into the bulbs, resulting in bigger heads and increased yields. The cloves from the resulting heads is what are re-planted in the fall to overwinter and emerge in the spring as new plants starting the cycle all over again.

You won't regret it Topsie the taste is far superior to the imported stuff that is sold in grocery stores. If you get your seed stock from local growers you will be assured that the variety is suitable to your growing zone.

My garlic didn't come up anywhere in the yard this year. I hope some of it down there survives the drought. We have the hard-neck variety growing wild around here.

SRS

I had a squeezy bottle of Aldi tomato sauce in my camping box, that I bought in 1992.

I only used it when camping, & it lasted until 2004 when my then girlfiend forced me to throw it away- even though it wasn't all used up!!

six months in a dark cupboad

four months in the refrigerator (cooling adds moisture, which quickly accelerates rancidity.)

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

all hope is not lost - rancid, poor, tainted olive-oil burns with a smokeless, oderless, white-toned, flame....multiple lamps are readily available...and "esential oil" may be added if you like to "stink-o-fy" a natural environment.

Ms Oyl's abilities are legendary. Unfortunately she will not do anyone except that pint-sized sailor, Popeye. I've had my eye on her for years, but not even a kiss! What has that ugly little swab got that I don't? He disappears into her place for days at a time, only emerging now and then to buy another can of spinach. I hate Popeye!

I found 3 tins of tuna in my larder. It looks like a sell by date on the bottom 2002 or something - I think they're about 5 years old. They're tuna in brine - should I chuck, or feed to cat?

Mind you I don't have a cat!

I have found that even California garlic will grow in the Northeast if you take it in before the weather goes below 40 F at night. I keep it in the same box as my scallions and basil.

Try Monini olive oil. The first time I tried it was at a restaurant as a bread dip. I asked the chef and he told me the brand. Very fruity and delicate.

On sell-by dates: one of the great bargains in Irish supermarkets is to pounce on serious cheese being sold off cheaply because it's reached its "sell-by date". Usually, the poor misfortunate hasn't even thawed out, never mind gone off....

Regards

p.s Oh Yes! On oil: smell it - if you're still not sure, it's fine!

Honey is bacteriostatic. If it is sealed, is not infected at the time of sealing and is not exposed, there is no reason it should not be good indefinitely.

I'll tell ya what popeye's got that you and Bluto don't, Dan. His johnny is shaped like his forearm. After years of being his girlfriend, you boys couldn't even touch the sides any more. Enough said.

I think this is the longest thread I've started without diving in to give some support. In any case, I suspected that the bottle I found in my company's larder was some I purchased in mid-1999 and left there and no one used it after. I've started cooking with it with no harm and no bad taste, so I consider it 'aged'.
Thanks for the edifying advice and expansion on some collateral themes.

As Robin Williams once said, (as Popeye) "Ya don't have to be a physikisk to know what matters!"

MartinRyan

recently there has been Oz media fuss about supermarkets selling vegetables over a year old...

their 'manufacturer' didn't put 'use by dates' on them you see...

One more way in which Man has outdone his Maker...
