Science advanced rapidly after the fairly recent discovery that scorpions all are fluorescent under black light. The ability to find the little buggers in the desert, at night when they're out and about, has led to significant advances in knowledge of desert ecological interactions, both for scorpions and for other species with which they interact.

But needing a blacklight to find your pet pig, especially an expensive laboratory specimen, is a bit much.

Of course if your just trying to separate bits of your pig from some other pig, after they got somehow "together," I suppose it has it's uses...

John

i once knew of a marine biologist who was doing research on jellyfish
to find out why and how they were flourescent or phosforescent...esp.
when near nuclear submarines...this caused the subs to be more visible
on radar...she had to collect the jellyfish and put them in a blender and seperate them into their components. a hard thing for a jelly fish lover to have to do.

and all for the navy as i recall....

maybe some relation to the ones used here to genetically engineer these green piggs...maybe kermit and miss piggy would like to see some pink frogs??

We had a pink, fluffy dinosaur* last night, so green pigs isn't much.

* someone was speculating why the experts keep saying dinosaurs were green and brown, and you should have them in more interesting colours. A pink fluffy dinosaur Birthday cake appeared.....

I knew a guy at a SCA camping event who stuck a green 'stick light' in his mouth. He was wandering around in the dark talking to people and giggling when the light flashed on their faces. It broke eventually, and stained his tongue and the inside of his mouth green.
I think he is still alive, but he was an AJ anyway...

I'm not making this up you know...

I find it hard not to think about things like bacon and tomato sandwiches, pork barbecue, and moo shu pork all sitting around, glowing in the dark -- and the subsequent ability to find the sewage treatment plant in the dark!

Someone on the BBC wondered why they were bothering with fluorescent green pigs: why didn't they concentrate on breeding a transparent politician?

I'm moderately impressed. Now, if they'd toss a little avian genetic material into the mix and come up with flying glowing green pigs I'd be really impressed.

There are some restaurants that put you in a totally dark room. The idea started with a blind restaurant owner forgetting to turn on the lights one night.

now you would be able to tell you are eating pork.... and who just had....

hmmmm

Well, danged... Me and the Wes Ginny Slide Rule have been working on crossin' a crow with a pg and gettin' the pig to fly and thought we were right at the doorstep of a major breakthru anf then this>>>

Hey we was up fir major funding but now we have green pigs an' they gonna get the crow/pig grant prolly cut in half next year... Last year we got a couple nudred bucks so I reckon we'll trudge ahead with 'bout a hundred bucks this year but, mark my words, we'll bet them pigs in the air soon...

Actually Stephen there IS a practical application for the green pigs!
Unfortunatly the general public will probably not notice it as the fact that the pigs glow in the dark is much more interesting that the fact that scientists are using it to look at how organs develop, especially the liver and heart I believe.
What would be best is if scientists could tag precancerous cells with GFP then use them to watch tumour progression!
