Joy gave me a stick of coltsfoot rock last week. I don't recall anything quite so yummy before.

sort of like liquorice with a soupcence (sp?) of anise and...........

anyone else raving about coltsfoot?

Is that the sort of fawny brown stuff with ribs down the side? I think the word you are looking for is soupspoon, BTW.

That browny stuff, and the little thin hard black liquorice sticks, and liquorice root, were the sweets for the hard men back then. Penny arrows and Spanish strings were more my scene. Pity.

Hope it tastes better than Licorce sticks did when I reviseted them during adulthood (sure they were nice when I was a kid - tasted like Beechams powders when I was grown up...)

Tussilago farfara (Rapaire's link) is an excellent medicinal herb for coughs and asthma (pallative, not curative.) My husband makes and sells tinctures of it and also gathers and dries the leaves to sell in medicinal teas. (He also makes an herbal smoke mix with coltsfoot, mullein, sweet-everlasting and sumac leaves.) But it sure doesn't taste at all like anise or licorice.

Are coltsfoot rocks coughdrops made with anise-like flavoring that also contain some coltsfoot?

Whitby regulars may know that you can buy coltsfoot rock at Shepherd's Purse in Church Street.

Janie - it comes in a hexagonal cylindrical stick about 4 inches long by about a third of an inch diameter. It's light brown, and consists mainly of sugar. For people familiar with Edinburgh Rock, it's similar but harder. I think there's a coltsfoot flavour in some of the selections available.

Mail order?

I do like Colsfoot Rock myself, but I'm quite addicted to the drink Dandelion and Burdock.

(I should add that this firm has used tartrazine (E102) in some of their sweets in the past, though not in the coltsfoot rock. I have e-mailed them to ask if they still do this.)

The colour was not discernable because, at the time, I was watching "Mrs Henderson Presents" and couldn't take my eyes off the screen - now could I.

texture was porous, and not like normal sicks of seaside rock, nor hard like boiled sweets. I would suspect there was a lot of air in it. Sweet. And the taste is not exactly like anything else but liquorice and aniseed are near enough to point the direction thereof.

I am disappointed with the reply to my e-mail regarding tartrazine.

"Many thanks for your email regarding tartrazine (E102).

Yes we are still using E102, but we are presently looking into natural colours for some of our products."

They then added a list of the products that do not contain artificial colours (including the coltsfoot rock), but it would be nice to be able to buy sweets without having to read the ingredients list every time.
