That's an Americano-Scottish accent. If he had done it in a pure Scottish accent, the Americans in the audience wouldn't have understood him at all.

Where did that performance happen, anyway?

oops:

funny but vulgar

He starts off by talking about speech in Scotland. I want to know what accent is HE talking in?

(It's a sketch about golf.)

I'm trying to become more cosmopolitan here.

Here's a link to a sketch by Robin Williams:

Here's my transcription from the recording at YouTube (see GUEST's post above).

THE GOLF GAME
As performed by "Jeb and Cousin Easy"

COUSIN EASY: You should get out o' these night clubs, get a little sunshine and fresh air, and learn how to play golf.

JEB: My pa said when you get too old to run women, you start runnin' them balls across the cow pasture.

COUSIN EASY: Nah, he may 'a' been smart but he wa'n't that smart.

JEB: How do you do it?

COUSIN EASY: Well, I'll tell you what little bit I know about playin' golf, and then maybe you can learn.

JEB: Oh, hell, yeah. Now what?

COUSIN EASY: Well, first you have to have your golf bag, your golf balls, and your golf clubs. You do have your bag, balls, and clubs?

JEB: Oh, hell, yeah. I got out o' the service with that much anyhow. Now what?

COUSIN EASY: You go out to the golf links.

JEB: I do?

COUSIN EASY: You pull the zipper down on your bag, you take your ball out, and you drop it on the ground.

JEB: Hot damn, woman! Wouldn't that get it dirty?

COUSIN EASY: That doesn't make any diff'rence, because if it gets dirty, there's a little steel brush there, and you brush it off.

JEB: That sounds like a rough damn game to me. I'll tell you that right now. Now what do I do?

COUSIN EASY: You tee off in front of the clubhouse.

JEB: Why can't I go around behind in the bushes where they can't see me?

COUSIN EASY: You want the people to see you, you idiot, so they'll cheer you.

JEB: They wouldn't cheer me. They'd boo the livin' hell out o' me.

COUSIN EASY: I'm sorry. First you take your tee—

JEB: What's your tee?

COUSIN EASY: Your tee is that little white thing about that long.

JEB: Hot damn! I got tattled on! It wasn't that big when I was in Alaska, though.

COUSIN EASY: They're the same anywhere.

JEB: Yeah, well, you put it fifteen below zero, and it'll shrink the livin' hell right out of it.

COUSIN EASY: You stoop over and you stick your tee in the ground.

JEB: Oh, hell, yeah. Now what do I do?

COUSIN EASY: You stoop over, stick your tee in the ground, and you put your ball on top of it.

JEB: Now that sounds natural, baby. That sounds natural. Now what do I do?

COUSIN EASY: Now you take your club—

JEB: I do?

COUSIN EASY: By the way, how do you hold your club?

JEB: Like the boys in Louisiana. I get it 'tween my thumb and my— None o' your damn bus'ness how I hold my club!

COUSIN EASY: You take your club in both hands, thusly.

JEB: Sounds like that ol' boy from Alabama. You all thumbs.(?) Now what do I do?

COUSIN EASY: Both hands—

JEB: All right, both hands!

COUSIN EASY: Then you throw it over your shoulder.

JEB: Hold it, woman! Hold it! Now ain't that stretchin' a little bitty thing a long way, throwin' it over your shoulder?

COUSIN EASY: Over your shoulder—

JEB: All right, I stretch it over my shoulder. Now what?

COUSIN EASY: Then you come down and you hit the ball and it'll soar and soar and soar.

JEB: Oh, man, it would if you'd scrub it with a steel brush and beat it with a damn club. Naturally it gets sore an' sore. Now what?

COUSIN EASY: You knock the ball on the green.

JEB: What's the green?

COUSIN EASY: You don't know what the green is, either?

JEB: I don't even know how to play the game in the first damn place.

COUSIN EASY: The green is that great big smooth patch with the little bitty hole in the middle.

JEB: Oh, I'm a hog about that hole in the middle. I may be too old to cut the mustard, but I love to mess around them damn patches, I'll tell you that. Now what?

COUSIN EASY: You pull out your putter.

JEB: What's my putter?

COUSIN EASY: Your putter happens to be the shortest club you own.

JEB: Look at me, baby. Look at me. You lookin' at me now. I'm in the game now. What do I do?

COUSIN EASY: You take your putter—

JEB: I do?

COUSIN EASY: And you knock the ball in the hole.

JEB: I want to put my putter in the hole.

COUSIN EASY: It ain't big enough.

JEB: You ain't been where I been.

COUSIN EASY: There's just one more thing I'm gon' tell you—

JEB: What's that?

COUSIN EASY: And maybe you can talk intelligently about it if nothin' else.

JEB: Oh, hell, yeah. Now what do I do?

COUSIN EASY: At the end of about eighteen holes—

JEB: Yeah!

COUSIN EASY: There's a little red flag there, and that tells you the game is over.

JEB: You can move the red flag to the second hole, 'cause after the first hole, I'm a dead pigeon anyhow....

Yes, you are looking for the "Golf Game" as performed by Jeb and Cousin Easy. Cousin Easy is still living; she is my aunt. The routine is available on the internet for sale. She truly is very happy that people still want to have a laugh with her and Jeb, my Uncle Cal. Thanks for enjoying their work.

Got your PM, Spaw. Thanks for the heads-up. Sorry, this is a new one on me. Yes, it sounds like something in the same spirit of the "crepitation contest" recording, and also the English radio children's show from the 50's, about "playing with your balls," which was on an old Kermit Schafer "Pardon My Blooper" 10-inch LP.

I can't find anything much but I distinctly remember this routine here in the US. It floated around on records for years if we're thinking of the same one. It was an underground kind of sensation. I recall clearly one line......Thye are talking about putting the ball in the hole and the other guys says, "I want to put my putter in the hole." For the mid 60's this was raw. It seemed that the golf game thing tended to accompany things like Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts records or the other great record, "The Crepitation Contest."

Hmmmmm............Wonder if Chanteyranger might have some info on this??? I'll PM him.

Spaw

Thanks Jim for looking around. I was well acquainted with Rex and his band members. Unfortunately he passed away at a very early age, However, he is the man known as uncle Jarge in this area and it was him that played "Uncle Jarge's Golf Game" on the local radio station. I have contacted several of his relatives looking for the selection and although they recall it do not seem to know where he obtained it or where it is at present. Thanks again for your research. Jim

You might try posting a query at Make 'Em Laugh! (monologues.co.uk). They specialize in humorous monologues/recitations, mainly British. I've already searched their current holdings. They only have one poem that mentions "golf" and it doesn't seem to be the one you want.

You might also try to find out if the radio station, or the community where it is located, has a message board where you can post a query. Maybe a local newspaper has a web site with a message board.

If you get the lyrics, please come back and post them here.

"Jarge" is a pronunciation of the name George--most often found in Newfoundland.

several years back a local entainer who called himself "Uncle Jarge"
Had a radio show. On one occassion he played a Bawdy song about a fellow who was listening to someone describing a golf game and this fellow thought he was referring to his private parts. It created a considerable uproar amongst the listening audience and nearly got Uncle Jarge cancelled. I have never been able to find any information or copy of this song. Uncle Jarge is now deceased and
there does'nt seem to be anyone around who can provide any details as to who or where this came from. However, many people remember the incident. Hopefully, someone will see this and can help. Thanks: Jim
