Subject: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: kendall Date: 26 Jan 06 - 04:09 PM I know a couple of 'catters in that area, but I'm curious. Are there any more? Jacqui and I will be in that area for a week or so in April, and I will be doing a gig with Utah Phillips on April 8th in Grass Valley. We would like to get around some and visit some catters, and if you have a spare bed for a night, that would be great. We also need to rent a car. Anyone got a spare Taylor guitar I could borrow? I will not put mine on a plane. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: number 6 Date: 26 Jan 06 - 10:54 PM That's why you go out and buy a good quality cheap guitar like a Blueridge. You can pick up a BR160 solid rosewood body, solid sitka spruce top for $500 U.S. or less down there in Maine ... if you wanna go cheaper get a BR60 lam rosewood, solid spruce top for about $250-300. And these usually come with a pretty good case ... if the airline loses or wrecks them you can get nearly the full replacement cost. Overall youd have a 2nd guitar that I bet you would grow to be very attached to, and you don't have to borrow someones guitar and feel uncomfortable with their setup. sIx |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: Ebbie Date: 26 Jan 06 - 10:57 PM Awwww, come on, Kendall. Where is your spirit of adventure? The story goes that late in her life Mother Maybelle Carter flew to California to meet a group that wanted to put on a musical tribute to her. As the group that picked her up at the airport watched in horror, her big Gibson, valued (by others) at several hundreds of thousands of dollars, came jouncing and jolting down the ramp. She had checked it. FWIW, I wouldn't advise anyone to fly to or out of Juneau, Alaska until our only airline's policy changes. At the moment Alaska Air's prices have gone up by two-thirds. Just to Seattle (our closest out of state destination) and back is close to $600, even booked for a date in April. To Portland, just 45 minutes farther, almost $700. Used to be anywhere from $250 on special to $434 regularly on down to San Diego. Hey, I know that jet fuel has gone up in price- but that much? Huh uh. Whatta ya mean- you'd travel with a Martin? You go too far... :) |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 27 Jan 06 - 12:42 AM Kendall, buy a Calton case for the Taylor, and fly with it. I fly all over the U.S. and to Ireland with my guitar in a Calton case. And it's not even a Taylor. Never had a problem yet. The case will get dinged a bit, but that's why you get it. So the guitar don't. C'mon ya cheap ol' fart - get the Calton! Seamus |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: kendall Date: 27 Jan 06 - 09:22 AM Good advice Seamus, but that case would cost me more than Utah is paying me for the gig! |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: Amos Date: 27 Jan 06 - 09:55 AM Kendall: I brought me old Martin across the country by air using a much more inexpensive solution called a Clamshell. It worked. Barky is in the next area south -- San Jose -- I will drop her a line and see if she is game. She only has a parlor-size Martin, but it's pre-war. Just that it's built for smaller hands. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: Ebbie Date: 27 Jan 06 - 10:54 AM I have a friend, Amos, who also uses the Clamshell. He is satisfied with it, even though it's a mighty heavy critter. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: number 6 Date: 27 Jan 06 - 11:29 AM Anybody here ever have anything lost by an airline? I have, Joni Mitchell lost her beloved Martin D-28 by United Airlines, someone here in Saint john had a dog lost ... go ahead, spend a gazillion on a fail safe case that can withstand a nuetron bomb ... but if it is lost, there goes you gazillion $$ case and your gazillion $$ much loved Taylor .... and it's not as if you are a well paid musician who can easily replace the cost of your instruments. Buying a cheap well sounding second axe makes much more sense to me ... Or be a ceap bastard and try mooching an instrument of somebody else. BTW, I never loan by Taylor out to anyone. sIx |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcatters near Sacramento CA. From: open mike Date: 27 Jan 06 - 08:56 PM oh and south west airlines lost my martin guitar once in new mexico. theyu found in on another flight and sent a courier to find me in the boondocks. I didn't want to leave the airport without it, but had no choice. good news..i got it back. this summer i had a luggage mix up on the way to stockholm...could not make it thru customs to board the flight i was scheduled for. my luggage did though, and was sitting un attended in the middle of the floor in Sweden when i arrive...instruments and all. Geesh! How many times have you heard in this country, do not leave your luggage un-attended, has anyone else had access to your bagage, etc? it was probably there for over 3 hours, and each person landing there walked past it..no paranoia (or security) there! |
