"The great ones keep dropping off and there are no replacements"

If there were replacements available, then the original would not have been that great!

I think there will always be unique artists who in their own style will captivate an audience. Don Knotts had that gift.

tvland on cable is running marathons of old Andy Griffith shows, this week, in honour of Knotts. The episodes they are running feature some of his most memorable perfomances.

Swanno, I was just talking to Karen tonite about that interview and a couple of others. Each led into Steve asking Don as whoeever he was, "Well sir, you seem a little shakey (or jittery).....Are you nervous?"    And Don would always respond with that pursed-lip, wide-eyed, and high-pitched, "Nope!"    Never failed to crack me up.......and just thinking about it now still does.

He did some very cute movies with Tim Conway but for me, the best of them by far was "The Private Eyes," filmed at The Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina........classic broad humor and slapstick from two of the best.

My Father, to this day, watches the Andy Griffith Show every single day. The cable channel known as TVLand is his favorite. He must have seen every episode 15 or 20 times. But he still watches them and still laughs every time Don Knotts does Barney Fife. I grew up loving this man's humor. Thanks be that we have the ability to still see his wonderful schtick.

K.B. Benson...I'm a dynamite specialist (Jitter, jitter, shake, shake, shake)

And what does K.B. stand for?

KaBoom.

He was one of a kind.

It's time to nip this! Nip it in the bud!!

Ah, come on. He's not really gone is he? I mean, can anyone so much a part of so many lives, can he ever really be gone?

One of the cable channels did a documentary on some of the great comedian duos, and one of the ones they chose was Don and Andy. Andy pointed out that Don was one of the reasons that the Andy Griffith show was so well written. One of Andy's favorites:

(Andy and Barney are out on the porch after a big meal)

Barney: My parent's anniversary is coming up.

Andy: You decided on what you are going to get them?

Barney: Yeh, (long sniff and pats his stomach) I'm gonna pour them a concret sidewalk. They been wanting one for years.

Andy: (Looking incredulously at Barney) You're a good son, Barney.

The whole scene is done so deadpan, yet you want to bust a gut laughing so hard.

I nicknamed my first hunting rifle "Barney" because all I ever needed was one bullet in my shirt pocket, and I never got to shoot it!

Policemen everwhere ought to pay their respects to Barney - He is the ultimate lawman!

I spotted the name in the cast list for the new animation Chicken Little - he was the voice of the Mayor, Turkey Lurkey.
He is not one of the main characters, but an important one.
The film is excellent and well worth going to see - you don't need children with you.
Quack!

My favorites were the episodes when the Darlings came down from the hills and made music. And Howie Morris throwing rocks.

The one with Opie shooting the bird was one of the best too.

I am so glad that so much of his work is still popular and being shown and I only wish that someone would chonicle all the Steve Allen shows so we can continue to enjoy Don Knotts, Tom Poston, Louis Nye..........hilarious stuff!

My favorite episode with one of my favorite Barney lines will always be The Pickles with Barney saying he can't eat anymore of those "kerosene cukes."

Thank you Don for contributing a lifetime of laughter through those immortal characters.

One of the most popular shows of all time. Don Knotts was also on the Steve Allen show, his "Man in the street" bit.

Aww, bummer.
I spent a month and a half at home a few years back after being a needle point project for my local surgeon. A friend was nice enough to give me the first 3 or 4 years of the Andy Griffith Show (all the B&W episodes) on DVD during my recovery. TV occasionally gets as good, but never better, than when Don Knotts was with that ensemble.

He was also a writer and actor/comic on The Show of Shows, and many, many others. His credits could fill the screen. Hmmm... they certainly did. Thanks Don.

Long before he was on the Andy Griffith Show, Don Knotts was the voice of Windy Wales, the cook on "Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders' on radio.

May he rest in peace.

I remember watching The Andy Griffith Show as a small child and complaining Barney was the most annoying character in the world. (Ronnie Howard is exactly my age, so I was watching this program from his point of view, though I think Opie didn't get as exasperated as I did.) My mother explained to me that he was an actor and that he was very good at what he did because he was supposed to be so annoying. He provided a great yard stick to use when measuring other actors in similar kinds of roles.

Aw - one of the good ones gone. I loved him as Barney in the Andy Griffiths show. I can still hear the theme tune being whistled in my mind. Then there was "The Incredible Mr Limpet".

*sings* I wish, I wish, I wish I were a fish......

My grandson and I are having a blast watching re-runs of the very early Andy Griffith shows. Knotts was such an integral part of that show. I was saddened when I heard he'd passed on.

Thanks for the giving, the laughs, and the lessons, "Barney"

Yes. Barney Fife. My favorite line: "No more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches" while trying to describe the evils of life behind bars to some misbehaving boys.

I just came across that Don Knotts, one of the best of the best has passed away at age 81. Barney Fife will always be one of the funniest, immortal characters in TV history. Knotts was a comedy actor in the most genius of measures.
