One of the many pointless hobbies I have is to collect field guides on absolutely anything from birds to mushrooms, from trees to animal poop.

Reciently Joybell and I decided to trade our favorite bird guides and through PMs we exchanged adresses and sent each other the field guides that we like to use the most. Mine North America and her Austraila.

We thought that this was a great idea that we could share.

My favorite North American bird guide is the Golden Guide to Birds of North America, and my favorite wildflower guide for my region is Newcombs Wildflower Guide (Eastern United States, I think).

I am a big fan of the Peterson fieldguides. I particularly like their field guides to eastern birds, northeastern wildflowers, and wild edible plants. The line drawings for the these two plant guides are extremely good and useful. We use several mushroom guides, but the Audubon Society mushroom guide is the one I find simpliest to use. I generally start with it.

Birds: National Geographic Birds of North America And Sibley's Big Guide

The golden Guide is good for sparrow IDing with side by side heads for comparison.

The newcombs guide is great for wildflowers but I like the audubon as well for wildflowers and the Lone Pine Ontario wildflowers is good too

There are a pleathera of good hawk books but Hawks from every angle is my new favorite.

This is such a great idea. I am really enjoying my American bird book.
We bought new books for each other gnu. My own copy of the one I sent to Raptor is rarely out of sight and used every day.

The reason for extending the idea to other field guides was in case there was only me here in Australia and half a dozen people in America who wanted to do an exchange. Cheers, Joy

Janie why not make a package deal out of it and include a new pair of Binoculars, Backpack, Hiking boots, nalgene bottle and a promisary note to take him to Holiday Beach or Hawk Mountain during the spring Migration.

My personal favorite for birding is my Golden Guide. I like having the range maps together with the other info. Makes ruling out what it isn't ever so much easier. That, and having the whole of North America in one book is also nice. And no sharp corners to dig into my back isn't bad, either.
