Subject: RE: BS: So much for Scotland and Golf!! From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 01 Mar 06 - 05:22 PM Golfimbul was a chieftain of the Orcs of Mount Gram, who led his band in an invasion of the Shire. He was defeated at the Battle of Greenfields by a force led by Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took; the battle was only the first of two which were ever fought within the borders of the Shire (the second was the Battle of Bywater, the last battle of the War of the Ring, where his descendant Pippin fought). Bullroarer knocked off Golfimbul's head with a club and it soared into the air, finally falling into a rabbit hole. According to Hobbit folklore, this inspired the game of golf, which takes its name from the Orc. Golfimbul's name was probably specifically constructed for this pun. |

Subject: RE: BS: So much for Scotland and Golf!! From: Rapparee Date: 01 Mar 06 - 08:25 PM My backyard opens onto a golf course, and I think some of the players are either Orcs or Republicans. (Or maybe Democrats. Or Whigs. Or Tories. Especially Tories.) Even in these times. |

Subject: RE: BS: So much for Scotland and Golf!! From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 01 Mar 06 - 08:26 PM IMHO, only the Scots would be stubborn enough to play a game closely akin to outdoor billiards on a surface usually closer to vertical than horizontal, and further, to handicap themselves by using a tool singularly badly designed for the purpose. It must be a manifestation of the masochism engendered by the climate of the country. As to whether they were daft enough to actually invent it.....Who knows?. I do wonder tho', how they managed to involve the usually sane English. Don T. |
