I see it as black comedy. Very well written and acted, and tonight's season opener was as entertaining as you could hope for, despite several "who the fuck is that" moments.

Uncle Junior plugs Tony in the gut! It was laugh-out-loud priceless!

Omigod, you can't be serious??? He plugged Tony? That old reprobate Junior is still alive? You gotta be kiddin' me. Faggedaboudit. He shoulda been 6 feet undah a long time ago.

You're right, it is sort of a black comedy...and a drama at the same time.

It's true. The old scoundrel did shoot Tony. Un-frikkin'-believable!

I gotta feeling that Junior Soprano is headin' for the final roundup. They're gonna find him a nice little retirement home on the bottom of the bay somewhere. Nobody shoots Tony Soprano and lives.

It is Kafka-esque--which is to say, when you strip away the horrifying but absurd central conceit, it is absolutely real. And some of those characters have the same freaking names as people in my family--the only difference is that no one gets killed--not that you don't feel the temptation ocassionally. I guess that's why they say TV violence is cathartic...Bada Bing!

Actually... I did get hooked on "24" for a few episodes on accounta I wanted to see how Saint John's (New Brunswick) pride and joy's pride and joy was doing. After watching just twenty minutes, I got hooked on all the high tech stuff. Wow, man... neato!

Naturally, young Sutherland is amazing in the role. If he can pull off beating the crap out of trained assasins that are twice his size, well, that just proves he is from Saint John. No stretch there. I have been to the pubs in Saint John. Rough crowd.

But, I weened off after the show appeared to always be about the nasty, sneaky Arabs. Something just didn't sit right with me. I will admit, it is better than glorifying criminals, but it is still the classic Yankee Western... "everyman", pushed to the extreme, settles wrongs, saves others, with a gun. The only difference is the vilification of Arabs and that just ain't right.

The West Wing, Rap? Is that an Air Force type show? Scramble the jets or something?

Uncle Junior's brain is Velveeta at this point (on the show). Now, Meadow--THERE'S someone I could watch for awhile! Ka-CHING! Meanwhile, AJ is a little twerp hoodlum, and Carmella is all into fancy cars, houses, and who knows. It will be interesting to see where it all ends up...I guess the BIG FINAL 8 EPISODES won't be on until late next fall or something...SOB's!

Knew Dominick had a nice voice. He was also a bit player/mobster in the Godfather flicks--you'd hardly recognize him tho. Sorta typecast, like ol Abe Vigoda.

The FBI defines organized crime as any group having some manner of a formalized structure and whose primary objective is to obtain money through illegal activities. Such groups maintain their position through the use of actual or threatened violence, corrupt public officials, graft, or extortion, and generally have a significant impact on the people in their locales, region, or the country as a whole.

Here we have a list (from the FBI) of the kinds of activities that support groups like the Sopranos:

Bribery
Sports Bribery
Counterfeiting
Embezzlement of Union Funds
Mail Fraud
Wire Fraud
Money Laundering
Obstruction of Justice
Murder for Hire
Drug Trafficking
Prostitution
Sexual Exploitation of Children
Alien Smuggling
Trafficking in Counterfeit Goods
Theft from Interstate Shipment
Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property

and the following state crimes:
Murder
Kidnapping
Gambling
Arson
Robbery
Bribery
Extortion
Drugs
----------
Now how glamorous does this TV show seem?

And the Sopranos are all actors right?

Does watching the Godfather make you a member of the mafia?

The mafia are not glorified by the show only portrayed. Some of the episodes are so sickning that Little Hawk, who used to watch with me, now refuses to view it any more because of the violence.
It does not make anyone want to join.

I am reminded of people who get in a self-righteous snit because I happen to like to build models of Messerschitt 109's (which, YES, have a swastika marking on their tails...Oh! My! God!) and German Panther tanks....and due to that, they assume, I must be glorifying Naziism!

That is a leap of false logic I cannot support. I detest Naziism with a passion, but I happen to like accurate replicas of historial WWII vehicles (specially the really good looking ones with interesting camouflage schemes), and I love military history for its own sake.

I have often enjoyed gangster films too....not because I have any admiration for gangsters whatsoever, but because it makes for a very dramatic story, and it is part of our collective cultural history.

The reason I gave up on the Sopranos was not because of the violence in general, but because of extreme scenes of violence against women. That makes me feel sick. I can't stand it. It's not that I have a political ax to grind about it exactly, it just makes me feel sick seeing women smashed in the face and brutalized, and I don't like feeling sick.

And that is why I stopped watching the Sopranos, which is a very well-made show with great acting and great storylines. If people like it, it does not equate to them glorifying the Mafia, in my opinion. Matter of fact, I'd say that watching that show would generally make the viewer feel that being in the Mafia would be similar to being trapped in hell for your whole life, with absolutely no way out but death. Is that glorification? Not to me. It might be fascination with the dark and terrible possibilities of human existence...with just how far those possibilities can go, but it's not glorification. How can something that horrifying and depressing be glorious?

People like to see their fears dramatized. That's what drives almost all storylines, whether those fears have to do with physical danger or psychological stress. A dramatic story requires conflict. Conflict is uncomfortable, but it makes the story interesting. The Sopranos is all about people in the most extreme forms of conflict, due to their choice to live a lawless and dangerous lifestyle...or their mere association by family relationship with those who are doing so. That makes for a highly dramatic and interesting story.

If you enjoy it, fine...watch it. If you don't, don't watch it. Fine either way. (like building airplane models)

Say, there was another gangster film that had violence in it so gross and ugly that I quit watching it part of the way through, and have never seen the end... "Goodfellas"

We all have our point where something goes beyond tolerance. It's an individual matter.

There have been a couple places in the story that I've started to lose my religion--I know the scenes of which you speak, LH, and you're not wrong. As to "Goodfellas", I watched it again a few months back, and was stunned at how much was recycled into "The Sopranos"--

Still love the show...even tho the stuff that goes down can be more than a bit unsavory--but hey...so can life.

I think "Big Love" will be a BIG hit...great cast and what's like it on TV anywheres? Polygamy? Ain't nothin'. Like 6 Feet Under--who ever had a show about a family funeral biz? I think the finale of that one-where they showed how everyone died and when with that female soloist in the background was simply brilliant tv (her name is "Sia"-the tune was "Breathe Me"). I REALLY miss THAT show.

"Rome" I didn't get into--maybe because it seemed to have such a big cast and I was tryin' to figger out my old Latin classes and Roman history. Same with "Deadwood." Haven't gotton into that although it too has a great buncha actors.

I don't give a rats ass for the movies on HBO but once in a month maybe. I pay for it 'cause I like their original series. Gonna miss Tony and the boys once it hangs it up.

"You know its a TV show right?

And the Sopranos are all actors right?"

You bet. It's a TV show that presents a falsely glamourized view of cruel and stupid people.

It contains violence, and there are plenty of studies that show that watching violence leads to angry behavior towards friends and family afterwards.

It may just be a TV show, but bad TV shows can hurt real people.

L. H.:I don't think Tony will order a hit on Uncle Junior, nor do I think he will do him in himself. Tony shows a lot of compassion to Uncle Junior and will recognize that he should be in a nut house or other appropriate place. Now he may be responsible for putting him there I grant you.

"presents a falsely glamourized view of cruel and stupid people." Not True the main charactor is a fat guy you don't get to like. And the rest of the gangsters are downright hateable.

"there are plenty of studies that show that watching violence leads to angry behavior towards friends and family afterwards" Bullshit, you can find studies that suport the flat earth theory as well.It means nothing.

Such studies almost always brought out to support censorship.

If you'd rather watch a fictious story where great looking people always have good things happen to them, Go ahead. Free country. Thank God.
"bad TV shows can hurt real people" Are you serious?

All the violence in "The Sopranos" happens in folksongs and ballads(and more)--and song violence is worse, when you think about it, because it engages your imagination--and, unlike the Sopranos, it closing your eyes doesn't make it go away--

Last night, I watched a "Leno" I taped a few days ago. He talked about an episode last season in which some of these "heros" chopped up a victim in a bath tub. That's the kind of disgusting filth that entertains? Yer fucking sick.

Scuse me while I trundle off and club some baby seals whilst ye watch real trash on the tube.

Seriuosly? This is enetertainment?

Subject: RE: BS: Sopranos Season 6

It can be entertaining if you get interested in the personal interplay between the characters...as can any show (if it's well done)...once you get to know the characters well. It's strictly a matter of personal taste as to whether you can stomach the violence that goes along with it. If I hadn't already been drawn in by knowing the characters well in the early episodes, I would not have continued watching it as long as I did.

I wouldn't be hasty to judge people for watching it. It is no reflection on their basic character, in my opinion.

On the other hand, I do agree that an entertainment media that puts hundreds of thousands of images of violence in front of viewers every year (and I am not talking about just "The Sopranos", but about TV in general, and videogames, and movies) does have an overall damaging effect on the consciousness of a society. It de-sensitizes people. It numbs them. It hardens them. It makes them cynical. This is not a good thing.

The reason it's being done is that it makes money. People pay to see violence. A system where every decision comes down to what is most profitable will always move in the direction of excess and moral breakdown as time goes by.

"The Sopranos" in fact is an allegory for what has happened in society generally...but to a less extreme extent....the loss of innocence, the loss of decency, the breakdown of moral order, all for a lousy buck. And that is "The Road to Perdition" to quote the title of another gangster film. People are fascinated by gangsters, because the gangster represents the general public's own darkest possibilities, totally unleashed and running wild. This always leads in the end to self-destruction and the loss of all one had cherished in life. The loss of love, the loss of intimacy, the loss of peace of mind, the loss of self-respect and of respect for others.

It's a giant tragedy. Such tragedies were popular entertainment even in ancient times. Read some of Shakespeare's plays or the Greek tragedies, and you will find similarly heinous forms of popular entertainment about the darkest side of human nature.

Yer right, LH. I know. It just saddens me that every time I turn on the tube it's blood and guts or some strange "reality show" that pits humans against humans in the worst possible way or TV shows that are comedies based on making fun of, or outright shitting on, others.

Not that I can't take a joke. I love a joke and there are no holds barred if it is truly done for a laugh. But... I guess I'll just turn the channel, no matter what the majority is watching.

I really would like to continue watching "24", but, the racist shit bugs me.

Well, that's why I don't watch TV. It's a giant wasteland. So are video games and the movies, in a general sense...but you can find the odd one with something worthwhile in it. TV is the worst, in my opinion, because it's also full of commercial advertising.
