Subject: Happy! - Mar 27 (Robert Junior Lockwood) From: Abby Sale Date: 27 Mar 06 - 07:48 AM Happy Birthday! Folk bluesist, Robert Junior Lockwood was born 3/27/1915 in Marvel, Arkansas Still playing as far as I can tell. For 10 years he was the stepson of Robert Johnson and learned no small amount from him. His first gigs were with Sonny Boy Williamson #2 (aka, Aleck "Rice" Miller) whom he played with in the 1930's. Note that's Robert JUNIOR Lockwood (not Robert Lockwood, Jr.) As I get it, his surname is Lockwood but he was called Robert Junior (or Robert Jr.) because he was Robert Johnson's stepson. He would've been Robert Johnson, Jr., of course, but, being a Lockwood rather than a Johnson, people called him Robert Junior Lockwood. [thanx for the explanation to Dan Milner] Early warning notice: This series of the Happy File noncontinues beginning April 16. Subject: RE: Happy! - Mar 27 (Robert Junior Lockwood) From: GUEST,Jerome Clark Date: 09 Oct 23 - 11:34 AM Lockwood's Wikipedia entry notes that he came to dislike being called "Robert Jr." and repeatedly complained about it in his later years. (I recall such an objection in an interview I read.) Blues historians and journalists of recent decades call him Robert Lockwood Jr. I think the issue is settled. |
