Review of the Mill

It was a grand night - just over twenty souls - approx 50% performers

Alan & Jenny sang some good singalongs with chorusisssis - a couple of blocks did some soulful/crowded house sort of stuff - Big John with his beard did a couple of funny monologues - The poet lady did odes to Norfolk/seasons - is it Stephanie? - Malcolm cleared our eardrums with tales of woe from the deep south - Doug broke a string with his searing guitar rendition - a chap in the corner who I know well but don't know his name sang acopokio - the incredible Cathy blew us away with some song or other - Martin Dent played his own chair/squeezy thing and insulted the middle classes (shame) - Derek & lady friend played tunes that made us whistful for things we had no comprehension about - the new bar manager seem bemused

We were all arrested yesterday and are still awaiting bail - help

Message from TRP Thomas

The monthly ceilidh season continues at Hitchin Town Hall on Friday 28th April with The Bismarcks - three English musicians playing an eclectic mixture of traditional tunes, in distinctive rhythmic style, on three instruments: Ed Rennie on melodeon, Nina Hansell on fiddle and Gareth Kiddier on piano.

Having performed at ceilidhs, clubs and festivals for ten years, The Bismarcks have worked with some of the best callers in the country. Small but perfectly formed, the band's sound is somehow greater than the sum of its parts. At times there's an almost mechanical, unstoppable energy to their playing. The Bismarck Herrings, or just "The Bismarcks" to their friends, are a stomping little trio who play the very best traditional English tunes in an inimitably bouncy fashion.

"Their music is rhythmic and steady, ideal for English-style dancing..." Jim Bainbridge – The Living Tradition

"...an excellent set of dance tunes, played in a lively way, practically dragging you out of your seat to dance." - Solent Waves

This dance is part of the band's farewell tour – after ten years they've decided to call it a day, so it will be your last chance to see them in this area!

Our interval entertainment (to give you a breather and a chance to buy a pint or two from the Real Ale bar) are The Weston Appalachian Group – performing some of the intricate and energetic dance styles from the Eastern mountains of the United States.

Tickets on the door - £7.50 (under 14s £4). Real Ale Bar

Crikey - it's a slow month - where's all that cheerful banter gone?

I went to a hotel at the weekend to attend a chess tournament

Afterwards we congregated in the reception to talk about the games

We were 'chess nuts boasting in an open foyer'

I'll get me coat

It's open mic. at the Bull this Wednesday - come and do something you've never done before

Catherine has lost her lilac plectrum - anyone seen it

Hi Ross

Unable to make it again this Wednesday - darned band again (moved the practice from tues to weds)- but at least we may get some more recordings out it.

Hopefully Bert will bring his amplification again.

Wouldn't want you to strain to be heard!

At least we won't be scaring Bob with too much Prog Rock.

Might see you acoustic next week.

John

Cheers John - we'll miss you - seems it's worth it though

Can I be your guitar technician for world tours

I think I'll go acoustic this week and sit up at the bar

I'll get drunker that way

The open mic sessions are a dilemma

The musical variation can be a bit scarey

Maybe we'll get a brass band this week

Ross walks up to the bar, sits down and hears a small voice say, "You look nice today."
A few minutes later he again hears a small voice, "That's a nice shirt." He asks Teresa, "Who is that?"
She replies, "Those are the peanuts. They're complimentary!"

Man walks into a bar and slips over

He looks down and there is dogs do dos on the floor

He walks up to the bar and orders a drink

Second man walks in and similarly slips over

He walks up to the bar and the first man says - I did that

So the second man rubbed his nose in it

Open mic tonight - Keith at Streatly Sunday - Blue Anchor next Tuesday

of course - us Bartonians think nothing of getting up in the middle of the night to carry on regardless

I had a herd of cows milked and an engine changed before breakfast

oops - we haven't got a PA tonight so it will be a small non open mic mic night tonight

It will be nice to see you Mike

I think the times are American (eastern) standard

Cheers Mike & Bert - only three of us playing/singing

Thanks to the crowd - Pat, Keith, Eve, Roy + wife, Bill, Carlos, Henry & friends, Teresa & Bob

Perhaps we should change the format of the open mic nights

Any ideas

Should we have a proper folk club night & book John Breeze

Hi Ross

Shame I couldn't make it last night.

If the Open Mic goes I might have to form a real rock group, just as an excuse to buy more guitars.

All the best

Riffin' John

Cheers John - can I be in your rock band - I can make tea

I'm hoping to go to Bedford folk club tonight

Barton's Keith has a gig at the Cricketers in Caddington on Saturday and The Chequers in Streatly on Sunday

I'm going to be off line for a few days - just in case you think I've gone quiet

Have a good May Day - I think there is a dawn dance somewhere in Bedfordshire

Maybe the Unicorn man can fill in the info?
