It's a good idea to have more than one admin for a facebook group so that somebody can take it over, delete it, or at least announce its closure if you fall under a bus.

Website domains need to be renewed, otherwise they'll be bought up for spam - or worse. Ask for links to it to be removed: for example Mike Harding's site links to that hi-jacked site.

Barnsley Folk Club has an abandoned Twitter account too.

It's the web's equivalent of space junk.

It would be a good idea to actually delete the old FB account (if that's possible). Or at least post a link to that site visible to non-FB members (i.e. not a comment).

The website (linked-to in the old FB account) looks like it has been hi-jacked. At least it's not porn - but it might contain malware, so don't go there.

Up date ~ Barnsley folk club now meets at the Barnsley Trades club, Townend Barnsley 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in the month ~ in the lounge from 8pm prompt

entry via Race common Road and free parking very close by in Plumber street (via Dodworth Rd)

Well blow me down with feather I guess I' m now in a thread - often wondered what it was. I see you doing a spendid job here Ray so I thought I would help by mentioning that our next guest at Barnsley Folk Club will be John Connoly on Monday 26th June. Theres the plug anyway!

In reply to stuff re Holmfirth just to say how good the revised resurrected festival was. For those of us who despair at times about the elitism formality and inaccessibility of many of our "top names" it had a great "people's festival" feel to it in my view and I hope this and other festivals continue with this ethos.

Mick has always been from Batley which is nearer to Dewsbury

Barnsley is in South Yorkshire between Sheffield and Wakefield/Leeds Sth/Nth, and Holmfirth due West and Doncaster due East

Batley/Birstall is in West Yorkshire (although all were in the West Riding of Yorkshire)

Batley/Dewsbury were old Mill areas and had an Irish contingent from which Mick collected his Batley Irish songs and others from the area, gave rise to songs such as Luddites/Croppers and Poverty knock

Barnsley was/is famous for glass manufacture, pits and had linen weaving originally as a 'cottage' industry circ 1850s and gave way to powerlooms before raw material problems etc Has no traditional songs that I know of!

Ethnic minorities were never really part of the Barnsley population and is still not much more than 1% of the total.

Batley/Dewsbury and Huddersfield in contrast have quite high Asian population

The Centenary Rooms in Barnsley Civic Hall (presently Mothballed but due for a significant refit ~ the Civic)

Saw many top acts there including High level Ranters, Yetties, Strawbs, Martin Whyndham Reed, Tony Rose, Nick Jones, Mike Harding, Derek Brimstone, Peter Bellamy et al

The club was in Council owned premises and had one of the first folk festivals in the Civic, before such events were popularised!


Later Derek and Dorothy started their King George Folk Club (Monday from which the current club inherited the club night)

The Monday club had Jasper Carrot and Barbara Dixon as club guests to my knowledge

Yep - Barnsley Folk Club has been around for decades. It was the first club I went to way back in the 60s, when it was at The Room At The Top. We were lucky enough to have Dave Burland, Tony Heald and Derek and Dorothy Elliott as residents. Packed every week. What glorious times.
