My wife and I named our daughter Casey, in honor of the Ol Professor and because we liked the name!

I will be sorry to see "Shea Stadium" disappear as a name. William Shea was instrumental in getting New York a team after the Dodgers and Giants left town and deserved the honor. Perhaps they will find a way to honor him, Casey, Joan Payson and Gil Hodges in the new place!   I notice many of the new stadiums are erecting statues outside of their homes, why not a few honoring these individuals?

I started life as a New York Giants fan, and at age 9 I had to start following my team from long-distance, because they moved to San Francisco.

We in the New York area could get radio coverage of every SF Giants game ~ it was "recreated" by an announcer in a local NY-area studio, who read some kind of incoming ticker-tape pitch-by-pitch report of the game while making sound effects, such as smacking the table with a ruler to simulate the crack of the bat.

This technique had been common decades earlier, but it was pretty archaic in the late 1950s and early 60s. The announcer (whose name, alas, I have long forgetten) was one of the last practioners of his art. His previous employment had been with the Honolulu team in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, who needed this kind of semi-fake radio coverage because of their distance from the mainland.

My dad took me to Philadelphia for a couple of Giants-Phillies games. We saw Wille McCovey when he had been in the major leagues for only a week or two ~ opposing pitchers hadn't yet found any weakness in his swing: he was hitting about .600 and averaging a homer every 8 or 9 at-bats. The day we saw him, he didn't homer, but he did go 2-for-4 with two triples!

Within a few years, the New York Mets were founded, so we National League fans in NY (former Giant and Dodger fans) once again had a team of our own. Like so many others, my old man and I discovered that "we had been Mets fans all our lives."

Because I was so young, I had never gone into the city for a Giants game at the Polo Grounds, but I was able to see the Mets a few times in the old Harlem stadium before Shea was built. I'm looking forward to visting New York in a couple of years to watch the Mets in yet another new stadium.

I know it's very unlikely in this age of corporate sponsorship, but I'd sure like to see the Mets' new home named for the one and only Casey Stengel, a baseball immortal with all four New York teams (Dodgers, Giants, Yanks, and finally the Mets).

Seamus, if you are ever in the NYC area on a Saturday when the Mets are in town, let me know, I would love to take you to a game! I have a Saturday season ticket plan with the Mets for the past 22 years. My seats are behind home plate, slightly to the third base side. Best seats in the house in my opinion! I admire the Red Sox. I was there in '86 when they won it all. (Sorry Seamus!)

The Mets unveiled plans for their new stadium today. Shea will be torn down in 2007. The joke is already circulating that Bill Buckner will operate the wrecking crane!

There are a couple of minor league teams near where I live - Annapolis, MD.
No, not the Orioles!
The Bowie bay Sox, and the Delmarva Shorebirds.
Great value, especially for families.
And everybody's hustling and trying hard, from the players to the umps to the P.A. people.
When I'm on the road performing I seek out minor league games to go to.

The steroid deal is a farce. Half or more of the players in the league were taking the shit. To pillory just a few who happened to hit massive amounts of home runs is a bit short-sighted. The league didn't mind too much ( nor the owners!!) when the turnstiles were spinning like radial tires to watch these guys hit tape measure blasts.

It's cheating yes, and far from fair, but it was only made illegal in the last year or so. It's all about the money, the league is as much to blame as anyone. Should have been a few noses in the wind when Bret Boone hit over 40 homers, and Brady Anderson too. And no pitchers were using?? Give me a break

Bobad--I used to listen to the ballgames on a transistor radio. I once took my transistor radio to school & church & used the earphone (discreetly hiding it & the cord under clothing & hair) to listen to the World Series.

I finally learned that the power source is no longer called a "transistor radio battery," but a 9-volt, when I had to replace a battery for a tuner.

Best way to get a baseball fix these days is to support your local minor league team, if you have a farm club in your area. Ticket prices are reasonable - you can actually bring your family without needing a second mortgage - and the level of play is real close to the majors. Also, the stadiums are smaller and so intimate that there in not a bad seat in the house. You get closer to the field than you can ever hope to get at a major league stadium.

I love this game, and have been a San Francisco Giants fan since childhood. The steroid issue hanging over Bonds, though, makes me long for the days of my baseball heroes; Mays, McCovey and Marichal. My framed picture of Bonds is looking tarnished, though the jury's still out.

Today's prices for a Giants game makes it prohibitive, though. $28 for the 3rd deck seats last season. Outrageous for baseball. To get my baseball fix last season, when not in SF, I went to the crosstown Oakland A's, for a Tuesday night $2 seat in the 3rd deck. Not the same emotions for me as seeing the Giants, but it's baseball and it's enjoying the experience with friends. I'll probably do more A's games this year, as $28 per is just not a baseball price. One of the many attractions of going to MLB games is that it has always been one of the most reasonably priced sports tickets. It's frustrating to see that change so quickly in SF.

Seeing baseball live makes it one of the more sensory experiences in all of sports. No wonder so many writers wax eloquent about it; the aroma of mustard, peanuts, the sound of the bat hitting the ball, the sight of the green, not to mention al the nuances of the game that gives it tension, even when there's seemingly "nothing happening."Players, too, are affected by their sernsory experience of the game. Mays, in his autobiography, wrote of looking up at the clouds when he was in the ballpark as being one of his vivid memories.

I think one reason why baseball, unlike football, doesn't come over as well on television, is that television follows "the action," while viewing baseball live is a total experience. Instead of focusing on one part of the action, you're looking at much more of the field while a ball is in play.

No - the drugs have rendered the game illegitimate for me - I cannot
recognize the accomplishments of Sosa, McGwire or Bonds. Baseball failed to step up to the plate and those afore mentioned players have forfeited themselves. Sorry guys, you just don't count any more.

Bobad- I couldn't agree more! I love listening to baseball too!

I don't think I've mentioned that what I like to watch in baseball are really teams working together and not a lot of single players working on their own glory and their own stats. I will support and enjoy watching any team that enjoys working together.

What I miss the most is listening to the games on the radio. There is something very alluring to be sitting on the porch on a fine summer's evening, sipping a cool beer and visualizing the game as it is being described by the commentators, the perfect medium for the game IMO.

I was a big fan of the game and specifically the Montreal Expos. Once they folded I lost interest in the game.

The game has become a showcase for the effects of pharmaceuticals and has been cheapened by steroid freaks like Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds.

The baseball season is a marathon, and not a sprint.. Depth in the pitching staff and good health are the two key factors in grabbing a divisional title....   Though I'm guardedly optimistic about my Blue Jays, I still like the White Sox because of the strength of their pitching, to go along with just enough offense.......

I'm a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan even though I live in California.

I love the game, the sights and sounds of the stadium, the food, and best of all watch families and friends spend time together. Baseball's slow enough for people to actually talk during the game and that's another plus to it, in my opinion.

While I have great respect for Mark McGuire, I am not happy about steroid use in baseball. Sure, there's always been a history of players cheating: corked bats, doctored balls, etc, I still don't think that an athlete should risk their lives or at the very least hurt their bodies for a sport that's for entertainment purposes. With that said, you can imagine how I feel about football and boxing. :(
