I have a song in my head and I can't get it out. Actually it's kind of nice, but I don't know who did it and I know only a few of the lines.

They go like this:

Early in the morning she hitched a ride down to Louisville,
Holding onto a hundred bill.
Dressed herself like a cajun queen in New Orleans, Baby.
Yeah, she looked good like a lady.

(Chorus)

Down on the Bayou, why you never know just what your doing.
Down on the Bayou, why you never know just what your doing.

Please help me with the artist and the rest of the lyrics.

Mick

I googled it. It is called "Mississippi", was written by John Phillips and recorded by his group the Mamas & the Papas on "Look Through My Window."

Lyrics here.

I'm not certain--it may have been recorded by him on a self titled album as well (or instead of) with the Mamas& Papas.

Thank you, I would never had guessed John Phillips. It wasn't recorded with the Mama's and the Papa's, though. He recorded it as a solo artist. I just googled John Phillips and found he released his first solo album Wolfking of L.A. in 1970. This was the album that included "Mississippi". I guess when all else fails I should Google first.

Thank you

Mick
