Happy Bloke is worried about how old he and his wife are getting at

        50?.

Well, I suppose that is probably a good time to start thinking about what to do with the rest of time one has, but so is 20, or 30, or 40, ... or 70.

Youngsters at 50 are barely eligible for membership in the AARP.

Incidentally, if in the US, a $12 AARP membership might help focus on some of the life changes appropriate to youngsters of such tender age. I can't give a whole-hearted recommendation to the orgranization, due to rampant politicizing in many of its activities; but the monthly Bulletin usually carries a smorgasboard of beautiful people a lot older than the newest recruits. Some even older than I am.

50? (snort) (snicker)

mere puppies

John

I think the best way to be prepared for death is to have lived life.

what most people call "life" is not real. it is a dream--an illusion. when the change referred to as "death" occurs, it is then that we awaken from our dream to see what is real, what is life.

It is not death that most persons fear, but the dying.

kat -

During a period of concern over the devastation of my retirement savings by the dot-com bust, I began watching the obits to see how long people are living now. (The info from the underwriters is suspect in the extreme.)

My conclusion is that unless my longevity is significantly less than "average" I'll either starve or have to give up all my meds to eat. Of course if I give up my meds and die, I'll get a hearty "tol' ya so" from the Drug Industry.

Oooooooooookay, Kendall...

In May, when sea-winds pierced our solitudes,
I found the fresh Rhodora in the woods,
Spreading its leafless blooms in a damp nook,
To please the desert and sluggish brook.
The purple petals, fallen in the pool,
Made the black water with their beauty gay;
Here might the redbird come his plumes to cool,
And court the flower that cheapens his array.
Rhodora! If the sages ask thee why
This charm is wasted on the earth and sky,
Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing,
Then beauty is its own excuse for being:
Why thou wert there, O rival of the rose!
I never thought to ask, I never knew:
But, in my simple ignorance, suppose
The self-same Power that brought me there brought you.

JohninKS:

Did you see the Obit: Mr. Arthur Winston thread? He lived to be 100 and worked the same job for 72 years.

Here's the some of it:

At work on a winter day in 2005, he told a group of colleagues that one of the reasons he had lived so long was that he opted for a few tablespoons of castor oil whenever he felt sick. Over-the-counter medication, he said, was something to avoid.

"Pills are one of the biggest problems people face today, especially these old people you see out there," he said. "I've never in all my life seen so many people taking so many pills. And at the same time it seems like people are nothing but sicker than ever. It's a shame, all these old people dying over the pills they take."

Hell, they're all young whippersnappers, them fifty-somethings. Still wet behind the ears, lollygagging around with a sugar tit and a diaper.

Wait one...no...I don't wear Depends. Not yet anyway.

The only way to significantly raise the odds on living to a very ripe old age is to have parents and grandparents who lived to a very ripe old age.

But we now have lots of pills and potions that can help sick old people keep going for a lot longer than in past times. Mostly, when properly used, they minimize the effects of the things that would have been fatal not long ago. As long as it's still fun, perhaps the pills are worth it.

Maybe, JohninKS, as long as it's fun as you say. But, then we get into the what if it's not fun, but nobody wants to give it up/let go? How long for a person to be kept going with drugs when there is no quality left? Ah, that's too much for this thread; a debate that could go on forever and I think one Mudcat has seen before ala Terry Schiavo, if memory serves.

Life builds it's self by differential survival.

No death; no life.

I am not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it happens.

Round and round the greenwood tree
Dance, dance, while you may
Tomorrow is your dying day
Dance with me, dance with me
