Hickory Dickory Dock

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The mouse ran up the clock,
The clock struck one, and down he run,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The bird looked at the clock,
The clock struck two, and away she flew,
Hickory Dickory Dock

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The dog barked at the clock,
The clock struck three, fiddle-de-dee,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The bear slept on the clock,
The clock struck four, he ran out the door,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The bee buzzed round the clock,
The clock struck five, she went to her hive,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The hen clucked at the clock,
The clock struck six, fiddle-sticks,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The cat ran round the clock,
The clock struck seven, she wanted to get 'em,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The horse jumped over the clock,
The clock struck eight, he ate some cake,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The cow danced on the clock,
The clock struck nine, she felt so fine,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The pig oinked at the clock,
The clock struck ten, she did it again,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The snake squirmed out of the clock,
The clock struck eleven, he said, "Let me get in",
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The snail slimed up the clock,
The clock struck twelve, what a sticky self,
Hickory Dickory Dock!

Alternative first verse, this is the one I remember from childhood:

Hickory Dickory Dock.
The mouse ran up the clock.
The clock struck one, the mouse ran down
Hickory Dickory Dock!

I suppose we will have to bring up the old theory that Hickory Dickory Dock meant 8 9 10 in some variety of Celtic (or Druidic) language.

Does anyone know where this supposition actually came from? Is it related to shepherds counting, which WAS often Celtic? (Yan Tan Tethera Pethera is one example in a song)

Hickory is a tree, and dock is a plant. Too bad it's not "hickory chicory dock". Then we'd have something!

Hickory dickory dock
two mice ran up her sock
One stopped at her garter
the other was smarter
Hickory dickory dock.

Hickory dickory dock
two mice ran up the clock
The clock struck one
And the other escaped with minor injuries.

There is an old story about a doctor who went into the same bar every day and ordered an almond daiquri and bullshitted with the bartender Dick. One day when he went in he ordered the usual, but the bartender didn't have any almond flavoring so he substituted with hickory flavoring. The doctor tasted his drink and asked the bartender if this is an Almond Daiquri Dick and the bartender replied no it's a Hickory Daiquiri Doc.Lame joke of the week
