Subject: BS: Another name thread..... From: Hawker Date: 08 May 06 - 06:38 PM This is utter BS but it started from MBS Lynne asking about names for her dog. As I was busy giving the camper its annual spring clean, I was musing to myself.......we have had the discussion on Mudcat about our mudcat names and why, I am sure that we have all done that Porn name, where you take your first pets name and your mother's maiden name to create a ridiculous name (mine is Whiskers Blakey!!!!) But how about house names........ My father worked with a chap whose house was called Eildercol - this is the one that got me thinking, you see if you break it down you get The first 3 letters of Eileen the first 3 letters of Derek and the first 3 letters of their dogs breed - collie! Along the road from us there is a house called Marlia, again, Mar, the first 3 letters of Martin and Lia, the last 3 letters of his wife Julia! The funniest one is in a village close to here, for all his teenage life, my husband passed this house on the way to school and thought 'Jesmond Dean' was a spoonerism if Desmond and Jean. It turns out that the house was named after a place in Yorkshire! So, just for fun, lets try and give our homes a name using ours and whoever else lives there! Kevlustaf could be mine, (me KB and Dog) or maybe Tamamker (Tam, Amber & Hawker) I apologise for it being non-music related but perhaps if there are a few good ones we could use the names created as tune names! Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: Bill D Date: 08 May 06 - 07:06 PM I once rented a house...(for about 6 weeks, until both the landlord and the inspectors decided it was not up to standard)....that was so decrepit we named it "Withering Heights" |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 08 May 06 - 07:58 PM Not too many people down here on the Gulf coast name their houses. They get blown away by hurricanes too often and it's less painful to walk around in the rubble if you haven't given it a name. |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 May 06 - 08:27 PM In the US, nobody but the very wealthy gives names to their houses. If you own just a few houses, you can call them "the house," "the cabin," "the ranch," etc. I suppose it can get too confusing if you have more than 3 or 4 houses, so you need names. Likewise, if you own only one cat, you can call it "the cat." Most people do name their cats, though. I'm not sure why. |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: frogprince Date: 08 May 06 - 08:40 PM Our e-mail address starts with JADE, for J And D Elkins, so I 'spose the house could be Jade Manor or somethin'. |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: Rapparee Date: 08 May 06 - 09:08 PM We called our house in Indiana "Teach Failte", but the one here in Idaho is simply called "2281" -- after its street number. The condo was called "The Condo" and the house in Ohio was called "3496" after its street number. Americans don't name houses much. |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: Deda Date: 08 May 06 - 09:31 PM Our mother named the homestead "Riverrun", from James Joyce -- and because the house had a pretty little stream behind it which we always called "the river." |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: Rapparee Date: 08 May 06 - 11:28 PM Well, lessee: we got the front yard, the house, the garage (which is attached to the house), the backyard, the side yard, the other side yard, the driveway, and the fence. These can be subdivided into upstairs, and that can even be broken down further into areas like the bedroom, the bathroom, the sewing room, the living room and so forth; the downstairs, which can also be broken down into parts. So if you look at it that way it's a pretty danged large estate! |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 May 06 - 03:38 PM The previous owners named my house Rainbow's End, it used to be called Rowlands Cottage. I never did like the new name, but after 7 years I've got used to it. So many people exclaim 'Oh what a lovely name' when I give my address, so it looks like that's it, I've got to keep it now. Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 May 06 - 06:14 PM My British in-laws once lived in a house called Lis-Lee, which I believe was formed by combining the names of the former owners. My in-laws didn't much like it, and considered it pretentious, but they didn't bother to take down the sign. A house down the street from their current residence is named "Far Corfe." You probably have to know something about British pronunciation to get the pun. |

Subject: RE: BS: Another name thread..... From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 06 - 11:17 PM Jim, LOL!! I've watched enough BBC etc. to GET it! I like the idea of naming our house. Going by the beginning of our first and last names, I guess ours could be "Kahurola," but I am thinking there must be something more descriptive! Two of my favourite, dearly departed cats could be the inspiration for BeauKay.:-) Add the dog and it could be Merbeaukay. Will have to think of some others. |
