Red Sovine, the country singer used to sing:

Across the East Berlin line is my little frauline,
And she's waitin' there for me in a land that isn't free,
They won't let her out and they won't let me in,
Hell, it hurts to know she's out there somewheres East of West Berlin.

In a moment of jealousy she said goodbye,
Then she went her way and they built that wall so high,
At night I hear her callin me and friends I sure can't grin,
'Cause it hurts to know she's out there somewheres East of West Berlin.

I've been haunted by a song from very early in the 60s. I heard it on the radio (the BBC Light Programme as it was - popular music and such) once only, but it had a chorus which started "West of the wall" - or that's what it sounded like. It was sung by a woman and had a very cheerfull bouncy tune, a bit country-ish. I've never found anyone who's heard of it yet.

Steve, I've been away for a week and surprised that you have not received the lyrics to what I thought was a well known sing. It was relaesed about the time of the Berlin crisis. I have the lyrics but it will take me 48 hours to access them.

West of the wall I'll wait for you,
West of the wall our dreams will all come true,
Though we're apart a little while......

Regards
John

I sure hope you can find the lyrics, John. I lived in Berlin for a couple of years, 1972-73, when there was a wall there. I vaguely recall the song - I think it was from the 1960's - and I've often wished I had paid more attention to the lyrics. I looked for the song in my fakebooks, but couldn't find it.

Well I've done some internet searching and found out that it was sung by Toni Fisher in 1962. I can't find the lyrics on the net but someone may have a copy of a recording. I remember the song, and I liked the singer's strong voice. I haven't heard it played on the radio etc for at least a couple of decades.

Enjoy. Regards, John.

WEST OF THE WALL
(Wayne Shanklin)

West of the Wall, I'll wait for you,
West of the Wall our dreams can all come true,
Though we're apart a little while,
My heart will wait until we both can smile,
That wall built of our sorrow,
We know must have an end,
Till then dream of tomorrow, when we meet again.

West of the Wall, where hearts are free,
West of the Wall, your heart can come to me,
And in my arms that hold you tight,
You will forget the darkness of the night.
The world knows of our sadness,
And we are not alone,
West of the Wall, that soon will fall,
And you'll come home.

    Verse:
    Wall built upon sorrow, one day you will end;
Hearts true to each other will not break, they will not bend.
In our hour of sadness, how clearly we can see,
Tomorrow's gladness - free, free, free, free.

West of the Wall, where hearts are free,
West of the Wall, your heart can come to me,
And in my arms that hold you tight,
You will forget the darkness of the night.
The world knows of our sadness,
And we are not alone,
West of the Wall, that soon will fall,
And you'll come home.

This was played on the BBC a couple of weeks ago, in a series called Sounds of the 20th Century. More info Bit of a spine-tingling moment.

I never said thanks did I John? Thank you!
