Subject: Seeking Morris side, Gloucs/Oxon From: eleanor c Date: 12 May 06 - 02:25 AM Hello. A dear friend of ours is having his pre-wedding celebration in rural Gloucestershire later this summer. Instead of the unseemly exotic dancer(s) one might expect to encounter at such an occasion we would like to organise a (male) Morris side to do the honours, which would surprise and delight our friend no end. Please do any 'Catters know whom I might contact to go about finding a Morris side which might be bookable. We would fully hope that they would join the ale related activities before & after. Thanks, Eleanor C |
Subject: RE: Seeking Morris side, Gloucs/Oxon From: Tradsinger Date: 12 May 06 - 03:02 AM There are a number of morris sides in Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire but you may have problems getting one at such short notice as they often have their programmes worked out well in advance and can't take short notice bookings. However, you could try looking up the sides on the Glosfolk website http://glosfolk.org.uk/and follow the link to 'dance'. I can tell you that the Gloucestershire Morris Men, the side I dance with, will not be available, but there may be a side that can. Prepare to spend some time ringing around. There may be other ways of getting folky entertainment, if you're really set on that. Send me a PM and I may be able to help you. Gwilym |
Subject: RE: Seeking Morris side, Gloucs/Oxon From: Selchie - (RH) Date: 12 May 06 - 03:24 AM You want an all male (Cotswold) side, try The Morris Federation it gives details of gender & types of Morris. Click on County List & choose your area, websites are listed. http://www.morrisfed.org/mf/home.html Or go to http://www.themorrisring.org/. Click Sidefinder & choose your area, this gives websites, you'll find out the type of Morris they dance there. (This is the same info as given on the Federation Side Finder pages ~ (all Morris bodies now work together to help/advertise & support each other). Good Luck. Any questions PM me I may be able to help. Depending on where in rural Gloucestershire the event will be, I know several men's sides in my area, Glos/Worcs/Warks borders. Rosie Stroud |

Subject: RE: Seeking Morris side, Gloucs/Oxon From: JohnB Date: 12 May 06 - 01:50 PM My side Orange Peel Morris, Ontario Canada, will do it for 200$ Canadian, plus beer, food, accomodation and travel expenses. There again, we don't do Cotswold, and some of the men aren't. We could probably get about 20 dancers and musicians out so you can do the math. If you don't decide to go with our team, good luck finding someone more locally. You mention Oxon above, when we visited England in 2004, we danced with a mixed side called Oxon Hundred who do various styles of dance. Good Luck and Good Choice of entertainment, JohnB |
Subject: RE: Seeking Morris side, Gloucs/Oxon From: eleanor c Date: 14 May 06 - 10:53 AM Thank you all for your help and suggestions - a lot of info which I will start to follow up now. JohnB, whilst I would dearly love to be able to fly your whole team over from Canada for the party, and put you up in our special hand knitted tent, alas funds do not allow. Or perhaps we could form a tent out of the bride's train to save on expenses....no, still can't manage. Will pm those of you so kind as to offer help in the next couple of days, after I have confirmed date and place with our best man! Thanks so much, Eleanor |
