Subject: Eugene OR music scene? From: GUEST,DaynaJ Date: 21 May 06 - 01:51 PM Hi, I may be heading towards Eugene in June, and I know there is a folk scene of sorts there, but am wondering what it is like, what other types of music might constitute a 'scene' there. Thanks |

Subject: RE: Eugene OR music scene? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 22 May 06 - 07:54 AM OR is an abbreviation for Oregon, then? I had assumed the thread was about a troubled marriage where the choice was between going out for entertainment versus stying at home with the boring husband, Eugene. Ah well - not a soap opera then..... Quack! Geoff the Duck. |

Subject: RE: Eugene OR music scene? From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 22 May 06 - 10:46 AM does anyone know a Susan Rhodes there? I haven't heard from her in about 35 years but she was a folk fan and I think she went out to a Nicheren Shoshu Buddhist group in or around Eugene -- could be anywhere doing anything now! |

Subject: RE: Eugene OR music scene? From: Wesley S Date: 22 May 06 - 11:45 AM My brother used to live in Eugene. It was a great town and I assume it still is. Hmm... I wonder if Mamas Home Fried Truck Stop is still open. I bought a great dulcimer from a guy named Dave at the Saturday Market. I wonder if that's still active too. Wasn't Robert Cray from Eugene ? |

Subject: RE: Eugene OR music scene? From: GUEST,DaynaL Date: 23 May 06 - 07:40 AM Thanks for replies everyone. I'll just be going to visit a friend of mine who moved there two years ago, but isn't into music much. I'll be spending a good amount of time on my own, so thought I could catch some shows. I believe the Saturday market is still taking place, and someone told me they have music there. I'm more of a jazz fan myself, but my travel companion (who won't be staying in the same place as me) is a died in the wool folkie. |

Subject: RE: Eugene OR music scene? From: GUEST Date: 23 May 06 - 10:36 AM I've ben living here in Eugene for going on 5 years and I've reached the conclusion that the music scene is unfathomable. There's a lot happening all the time(although it's really hard to make a living at it music here)(where is it easy?). There's a lot of musicians competing for the disposable dollar, and they are like everywhere some good, some bad, some not worthy of notice. There's a little bit of everything ; reggae, old time, bluegrass, Irish, jazz, classical, world music, klezmer, you name it. Nice folks, mostly. Drop me a line if you need any help. Mark Ross |

Subject: RE: Eugene OR music scene? From: open mike Date: 23 May 06 - 09:33 PM it might be difficult to drop you a line, Mark cuz you wrote that as a guest, and included no further contact info... keep on making music! |

Subject: RE: Eugene OR music scene? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 23 May 06 - 11:09 PM You will probably discover some "cutting-edge" performers...ones you never imagined....that have not cut a (disk, vinyl, or cassett) but who are far more worthy than those who became whores to the universe.
Sincerely, |

Subject: RE: Eugene Oregon music scene? From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 May 06 - 10:41 AM Don't think that OR inserted in the middle of a lower case sentence could mean the same as or in lower case. G. |

Subject: RE: Eugene Oregon music scene? From: mrdux Date: 25 May 06 - 02:10 AM if you're going to be in eugene as late as july 7-9, i'd second the suggestion about the oregon country fair. the website -- posted above at the top of the thread -- doesn't even scratch the surface of their music scene. michael |

Subject: RE: Eugene Oregon music scene? From: GUEST,Rev Date: 01 Jun 06 - 09:53 PM I lived in Eugene for a few years, and got more gigs there as a folk singer (sea chantey specialist) than I ever did in the SF Bay Area. The Willamette Valley Folk Fest is a great event (although it looks like you missed it), and Country Fair is an amazing scene with great regular acts like Suzanne Rand, Baby Gramps, Artis the Spoonman, Trillian Green/Hanuman and a very esoteric bunch of neo-vaudevillians. Yes, it's a haven for many of those who got "on the bus" and never got off, but IMHO it's the kind of festival we need more of in this country. Also Sam Bond's Garage is a great club that books folk acts. There's also the Eugene Folklore Society that puts on house concerts and the like. Pete Lovell, a dj at KLCC, runs the folklore society and would be a very good person to contact. Rev |

Subject: RE: Eugene Oregon music scene? From: open mike Date: 02 Jun 06 - 01:49 AM Ha! Pete Lavelle was the instigator, i mean well, we called him the benevolent dictator of the Folk Society in Chico many years ago. I have been on teh board of directors of it for over 20 years now, and we are carrying on the fine traditions that have been initiated when he was in ;the area. He also hosts a radio show (front or back porch) I left him a note when i was at the oregon country fair a couple of years ago. Good to see him continuing to work and play with music. |
