Subject: Lyr Req: Adieu, Adieu I must meet my fate From: fi_in_nz Date: 27 May 06 - 04:36 PM There seem to be a number of versions of this song and I'll know which one I'm looking for when I see it. It's otherwise known as Newlyn Town, The Highwayman and probably a number of other possibilities...... Can't seem to find it on DT, but I'm sure someone will find it there ;-) Cheers F |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu, Adieu I must meet my fate From: fi_in_nz Date: 27 May 06 - 04:48 PM Thanks Peace, that's the only one I found by googling it and it ain't what I'm looking for I'm afraid, close, but not that close. Cheers F |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu, Adieu I must meet my fate From: Peace Date: 27 May 06 - 04:50 PM F, How does the one you're looking for differ from "The Highwayman"? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu, Adieu I must meet my fate From: Peace Date: 27 May 06 - 04:52 PM "Variants and alternate titles include; The Highwayman, Wild and Wicked Youth, The Rambling Boy, The Robber and Newlyn Town." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu, Adieu I must meet my fate From: fi_in_nz Date: 27 May 06 - 05:34 PM It's the Eliza Carthy version I'm looking for. Not sure if it's her arrangement or she's singing one of the trad ones. I'm sure if I listen hard I can transcribe it myself, but I'm just being lazy looking for it here ;-) Cheers F |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu, Adieu I must meet my fate From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 27 May 06 - 05:59 PM No, it isn't. See instead http://www.garrygillard.net/watersons/songs/adieu.html, also on Garry's website. So far as I know, Eliza recorded an arrangement of the same set earlier recorded by the Watersons. A L Lloyd's notes (quoted at the page indicated) are probably wrong or at least misleading. See several earlier discussions of this song, particularly Willow day (Adieu Adieu)(Flash Lad), for more details. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu, Adieu I must meet my fate From: Snuffy Date: 27 May 06 - 06:37 PM I have a recording of "Adieu Adieu" by Eliza which is almost word for word the one Malcom linked to above on Gary Gillard's site. Just the odd difference to the Watersons version: in the last verse Eliza sings "funeral will I have" instead of "tombstone will I crave" for example. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Adieu, Adieu I must meet my fate From: fi_in_nz Date: 28 May 06 - 10:06 AM Great, thanks Peace and Malcolm. That's it..... Peace's site had a link to it too. Over and out, another lyric conundrum successfully solved by good ole mudcat. Cheers F |
