There seem to be a number of versions of this song and I'll know which one I'm looking for when I see it. It's otherwise known as Newlyn Town, The Highwayman and probably a number of other possibilities...... Can't seem to find it on DT, but I'm sure someone will find it there ;-) Cheers F

Thanks Peace, that's the only one I found by googling it and it ain't what I'm looking for I'm afraid, close, but not that close. Cheers F

F,

How does the one you're looking for differ from "The Highwayman"?

It's the Eliza Carthy version I'm looking for. Not sure if it's her arrangement or she's singing one of the trad ones. I'm sure if I listen hard I can transcribe it myself, but I'm just being lazy looking for it here ;-) Cheers F

No, it isn't. See instead  http://www.garrygillard.net/watersons/songs/adieu.html,  also on Garry's website. So far as I know, Eliza recorded an arrangement of the same set earlier recorded by the Watersons. A L Lloyd's notes (quoted at the page indicated) are probably wrong or at least misleading. See several earlier discussions of this song, particularly  Willow day (Adieu Adieu)(Flash Lad),  for more details.

I have a recording of "Adieu Adieu" by Eliza which is almost word for word the one Malcom linked to above on Gary Gillard's site. Just the odd difference to the Watersons version: in the last verse Eliza sings "funeral will I have" instead of "tombstone will I crave" for example.

Great, thanks Peace and Malcolm. That's it..... Peace's site had a link to it too. Over and out, another lyric conundrum successfully solved by good ole mudcat. Cheers F
