Subject: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Fiolar Date: 15 Jun 06 - 09:44 AM Having recently watched the very moving drama "Stan" about the last days of Oliver Hardy, I wonder if any 'catter could tell me when Oliver's widow Virginia Lucille (maiden name Jones)died. As far as I can find out she was born around 1900 and married Oliver in March 1940. Thanks for any info. |

Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Fiolar Date: 15 Jun 06 - 10:10 AM It was an hour long drama transmitted recently on BBC4. It dealt with the relationship between Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, but mainly concentrated on the last days of Oliver. Stan (the older) was played by Jim Norton and Oliver (the older) by Trevor Cooper. The younger Stan was played by Nik Howden and Oliver by Mike Goodenough. Hal Roach was played by Martin Marquez. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Peace Date: 15 Jun 06 - 10:13 AM "March 7, 1940 - Although they had never been out on a date, Virginia Lucille Jones accepts the proposal of marriage from Oliver Hardy and are wed on this date." |
Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Peace Date: 15 Jun 06 - 10:18 AM Maybe Bingo: Here. Second-from-bottom Trivia question. Can't attest to its validity, but it looks good because another site intimated taht the two died in 1957. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Peace Date: 15 Jun 06 - 10:19 AM CRUD. I think I screwed up. his death terminated the marriage, didn't it? Therefore, forget the above post. SORRY. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 15 Jun 06 - 10:38 AM Thanks for the information. I hope that they will show it here in the U.S. someday. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Stilly River Sage Date: 15 Jun 06 - 04:18 PM It was an interesting search, but I didn't come any closer than Bruce did. She was born in Texas. Big state--so it isn't a particularly helpful clue. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 17 Jun 06 - 12:26 AM "Stan" was too short to do justice to the quality of writing/acting/production.. imho it deserved to have been fully developed for a more satisfying 90 mins or 2 hours movie length .. or maybe even a mini series.. but one hour just felt too rushed and incomplete. guess thats the sad limitation of BBC4 drama budgets.. but even so, an excellent little drama and well worth watching |
Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Fiolar Date: 17 Jun 06 - 08:47 AM According to what I could find out, she was born around 1900. It also seems that she re-married after Ollie's death as she is shown on some sites as Lucille Hardy Price. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Fiolar Date: 17 Jun 06 - 09:48 AM I came across a site which contains a photograph of the grave of Lucille and her second husband. Unfortunately it is not a very good picture and the dates are hardly readable but as far as I can make out it says: PRICE IN LOVING MEMORY BEN A. HARDY LUCILLE 1899 - 1986 1899 - 1986 |
Subject: RE: BS: Oliver Hardy's Widow From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Jun 06 - 12:00 PM Her birthday was April 23. From an auction site "Lucille HARDY (néé Jones) met Oliver while working on a script girl on and became his third wife in 1940. She tended Ollie night and day during the last year of his life, after he suffered a serious heart attack. Slightly soiled. Staple holes at top left. Pinhead sized hole at top center of each page. Otherwise, fine condition." SRS |
