Most of my Mudcatters come from before there was a Mudcat.

Don Firth
Deckman
Stewart
I don't remember if I met miken back when I was little and my dad was alive
Mark Cohen
Marion
Jed Marum
Joybell
Hildebrand

several folks who appear as guests but who haven't joined, but since they haven't joined I won't list their names here.

And several others who SHOULD be Mudcatters, like Paddy Graber, and my Dad (John Dwyer) would have been one, had he lived long enough.

Have met a couple of folks who have "guested" here, and have been privileged to hear Gutbucketeer play, and also to hear one of the all time great catters do his THIEME songs years ago at the No Exit Cafe. To my knowledge, I've really only met and conversed with one regular Mudcatter, Metchosin.

The Mudcatters I've met are people I knew before I became a Mudcatter. Fretless, Dick Greenhouse, Susan of the DT, Pete Peterson, Carl Baron.

Since most of us use aliases, I may have met more and just don't know it. And maybe there are people I know who are Mudcatters but I don't know that they're Mudcatters. It's late and I don't know if there's a point to what I just wrote.

And there was someone wearing a Mudcat tee-shirt (the first I'd ever heard of Mudcat) and we exchanged a polite "scuse me" as we pushed past each other in the Swan at Sidmouth a couple of years ago.

Does that count?

Because of always being at the Getaway...most of those Carol C listed, and maybe 30-40 more. The mind boggles. It would take me half a day to count, and then I'd miss some. Have travled to meet WSYIWYG and thus met Hardiman also....and Uncle Dave O. was there as was a seldom poster who lives near WSY ,ummmm..what WAS his name? There were a few who came to Getaways once, like ..(one from Oklahoma)...oh, and M. Ted.

I can think of ONE person CatsPHiddle forgot...haha.

Some of these people I know/knew independently of Mudcat, and I've forgotten some, I'm sure. About a week ago, I realized I'd met Alba back in the late 80s, although she might not remember me. I was reticent and unsure of my singing, and she was very encouraging.

I don't think these lists are significant. Some people we meet because of Mudcat, but those who are likely to have met the most Mudcatters are the ones who are here and who have hung around folkies the longest, in the most places.

There are those I met once at the UK Stoney Stratford Mudgather, too many to list, there are three Mudcatters, one who now is only a guest, who I've met more than once: Leadfingers, Steve Benbow's Protege and King Street Smith.
I felt as though I'd met Rick Fielding though we'd only corresponded and spoken on the 'phone, there are many other 'Catters I feel I've met through our PMs etc., notably fatB*****d (we MUST link up some time, Charlie!).

I've been reading this thread and notice that if you're from England, your list is going to be mighty long. Same goes, if you regularly attend the Getaway or live in the D.C. area. Us boondocks people have much shorter lists. Here are some of mine... most go back a long ways:

Sandy & Caroline Paton
KyTrad
Art Thieme
Kendall
DW Ditty
Barbara Shaw
bbc
DuaneD
Bill D
fortunato & wife
(Best not get into listing D.C. folks, though.. I'm bound to forget someone)
Bobert and P-Vine
Jimmyt and wife
Peace (or so he claims)
ColK
Leadfingers
Sussex Carole
Theresa
Padre
Rick Fielding (He still is part of Mudcat for me)
Burl
(And then there several folks who I know by their name, but not necessarily by their Mudcat moniker.)

Dang! My list is longer than I realize. Funny thing is, I ran a folk concert series for 27 years, as well as a folk festival and a Folk/Gospel Festival but very few of the performers that I booked are Mudcatters.

Don' know why..

Jerry

I'd also guess that Dick Greenhaus (note spelling!) and Susan of DT have about a long a list as any, since they ALWAYS are at the Getaway, have been to many festivals in England, and are at many events in N.E. USA.

I've known Deckman (Bob Nelson) for years. We met in 1953 or so. In 1959, we started singing together at a local coffeehouse, then barnstormed the San Francisco Bay area seeking fame and fortune. Didn't find it (I'm tempted to say "Thank God!"), but we met some wonderful people and had some marvelous adventures.

Miken (Mike Nelson—no relation to Bob the Deckman). I've known him since the very early Sixties. Sang in a lot of the same coffeehouses. At the time, Bob and Mike looked a lot alike. Lots of people assumed that they were brothers, and lots of others confused the two. A few good stories there. . . .

Mark Cohen and Mary Garvey. I met Mary when Seattle Song Circle first got started in 1977, and Mark when I hooked a ride with him up to San Juan Island to do a performance at English Camp. The performance, as I recall, was set up by Stilly River Sage (Maggie, John Dwyer's daughter) who was one of the park rangers there at the time. I've known Maggie since she was a sprout.

Stewart. Been over to his house a couple of times for song fests. And he asked me to do some guest columns for his regular column, "Musical Traditions" in Victory Review magazine. Bob (Deckman) has also written a guest column or two.

Marion. She passed through on her busking tour some time back. I met her at Bob's.

Charlie Noble. He did a house concert at Stewart's   Franz was there. Genie was there also, but I met her first at a big gathering at Bob's (Deckman's) a few years ago.

Lemme see. Alaska Mike blew through town and we had a gathering (Mike, Bob, a couple of other folks) at Barbara's and my apartment on Seattle's Capital Hill.

Haruo. He came to the 2003 Coffeehouse Reunion (Geezer's) Concert at the 2003 Northwest Folklife Festival.

Oh, yes! Sandy Paton! I knew him back in the early Fifties when I first got interested in folk music. Sandy was acting, painting, and learning songs at the time, then he left for parts unknown. The last time I saw him was at the 1960 Berkeley Folk Festival where he was one of the featured performers. He introduced me to Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl at a post-concert party.

Maybe others as well. I'll ponder the matter.

Don Firth

Let's see.
From the Seattle area I have met Don Firth, John Ross, Stewart, Deckman, Mike Nelson, Reggie Miles, John P. and Jean Lemley (sp?) - whose mudcat name I'm drawing a blank on. Then there's MAG from Walla Walla and Mary Garvey from Long Beach. (And I know I'm forgetting a few.)

From Portland area I know David Ingerson Barb Mulligan and I think some others whose names aren't coming to me right now. (Sometimes it's hard to remember who's Mudcat and who's not.)
Charley Noble visited us in Portland a couple years ago too, plus he and his wife did a house concert at Stewart's last year.

In San Diego, I know the Banjoest and Amos, and I met Naemonson at a Balboa Park jam there too.

At NW Folklife I've also met John Bartlett and Art Brooks plus a woman from BC whose name is escaping me right now too. (She came to Singtime Frolics in Oregon about 3 years ago.)

I met Francy - Frank Jones and his wife, Nancy - via Singtime, too, and have participated in their Folk Festival in Toledo, OR.

At JenEllen's Mudcat gathering in 2002 I met Amergin (who lives near Portland), RangerRoger, MudJack, Mousethief (and MAG). (Am I forgetting anyone?)

And Marion came through here and did some jamming with us when she was busking around the country.

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

Genie

Yesterday morning, my wife and I were taking our morning walk by the river when I saw a man leaning on the fence, writing something on a note pad. As he approached us, I smiled at him and he stopped and said, "Do you see that Great Blue Heron over there?" He was very excited to add it to his list of birds he'd seen. And I could understand that. I told him that many years ago, I used to teach a bird class for adults. I still enjoy pointing out birds to my wife, although she really isn't all that interested. On the book case shelf next to our Great Room table, I still have my Peterson's Field Guide and in the front of the book is a list of all the birds I've seen. At one time, that was important to me. Reading this thread (which I've enjoyed and contributed to) it reminded me of my bird watching days and that list. This is a Mudcat check list of all the rare birds we've seen. I suppose if I did a thread it would be a little different. It would be a short list of the people who I've met on Mudcat but never in person, who I feel that I know as friends.
Not being particularly good at remembering names to begin with and not being in the Mudcat spotter frame of mind, I'm afraid that there are wonderful Catters I've met and said hello to, fleetingly whose names I either never knew, or have forgotten.

And then there are the people who have become real to me on here... Elmer Fudd (my kind of guy,) jimmyt (who I did have the pleasure to meet, with his wonderful wife after I'd already gotten to know him in the chat room... and defending him as one of our resident Republicans) freda Underhill, Peace, Jeanie, Sian, KT, Sorcha, Leadfingers (who I did get to meet last year,) ebbie, Ron Davies... the list goes on. It's actually a much longer list than the one of people I've actually met. There are many others who I know I will overlook, so I'll stop here.

To me, the "list" of people I've come to know and enjoy as friends on the Cat, who I've never "met" in person is far more important than those I have met fleetingly and haven't had the pleasure to get to know..

Now if someday I could get to know all the people on my list of people I've "met," I'd be mighty happy. What a pleasure it would be to sit down with Bill D or Ron Davies... or, or, or...

That's something great to look forward to.

Jerry

For me there's an enormous difference between adding birds to my life list (something I've been doing for more than thirty years) and meeting Mudcatters.

When I spot a bird species that is new to me, I am seeing some of the wonder of nature in a form that is new to me, and I love doing that.

However, when I meet a Mudcatter I've not met before, I am not only observing that person, I am also interacting with them and getting to know them better as an individual. I am getting an opportunity to put a face and 3D personality to a person I have previously only had an opportunity to interact with through words on a screen, or in some cases, through talking over the phone, which makes my experience of reading their words online much richer and more interesting, and also more real. And it gives me an opportunity to become friends with people I might not have become friends with otherwise.

For me, even if it is someone I have not gotten to know very well in the forum, when meeting them in person, it is a lot like encountering long lost family members, and there is, more often than not, an instantaneous bond of some kind that goes way beyond what I experience when meeting new people for the first time that I have not previously encountered online.

And often I find that I enjoy people I had not gravitated toward in the forum far more than I had supposed I would. I would miss out on a lot of great experiences if I only confined myself wanting to meet the people I become closest to in the forum. And I would also miss out on a lot of really great musical experiences.

A good example of this is something I experienced at the first Getaway I attended. I thought I was the only squeezebox player at that Getaway, and I didn't expect to have an opportunity to play music with other squeezebox players. But someone I had not had any previous interactions with in the forum took me under her wing and found me another squeezebox player to jam with. And the other squeezebox player was a Mudcatter I had never even heard of before, but he is a very gifted musician, as well as a man of great kindess and generosity. I had a great time jamming with him.

Of the person who found the other squeezebox player for me, I pretty much never have any interactions with this person in the forum, mostly because she doesn't post here very much, but I am always delighted to see her at the Getaways, and I remain grateful to her for being so generous and gracious toward me at that first Getaway I attended. Had I confined myself to only seeking out people I'd already gotten to know well, I would have missed out on a wonderful experience.

I love meeting Mudcatters I've not met before.

Hey, Carol:

I love meeting Mudcatters too. I'm talking more about the ones that I don't have the time to say more than, "Hey, nice to meet you." I only wish that I could spend some time with people. It's embarassing to me if I've only been briefly introduced to someone in passing, and then can't remember that I've met them, two years later. I guess it bothers me more with Catters, because I really have enjoyed the time I've had to spend with them. It's frustrating only having a moment to talk with someone that I'd really like to get to know.

I can understand that, Jerry. But nevertheless, for the reasons I mentioned in my last post, I value all of the Mudcatters I've met so far, and may some day meet. I enjoyed going through all of the names yesterday and remembering the experiences I had when I met all of the people I included in my list. It was a lot of fun, and brought back some great memories for me as well. It also brought back memories of trips to some interesting places in Ontario, Michigan, Chicago, Florida, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. As well as my own wedding where there were four Mudcatters in attendance, two of whom I had not met previously, or even had much interaction with in the forum. This thread has been way more fun than looking at my birding life list.

I should add that two of the Mudcatters who attended our wedding drove all the way from New York state to Maryland in order to attend, and they did so with the full knowledge that the Beltway snipers had already randomly shot and killed several people right in the same neighborhood where our wedding was to be held, and that they had not yet been identified or apprehended. And these two were people with whom I had had very little interaction in the forum prior to the wedding.

There's a lot of amazing people here in the Mudcat.

Sorcha, my friend, you made a comment about meeting a hundred or so. Why be so crabby? This is a fun thread, IMO.

But I still ain't gonna try and list them. But I will tell you about when Allan C and Bill Sables came to my home on the great ramble. It was about 3:00 or so in the morning and I had to go to the corner to meet them. Bill had been reading my posts, and imagining what I must look like. So out of the darkness I come strolling up, and he turns and sees this great hulk of a man come strolling up. His jaw kind of dropped as he did a double take and murmurs "Big Mick" in a tone I can't describe. I laugh thinking about it. I loved my time with Bill and Allan and wish I could see them again.

All the best,

Mick

I don't know...I think it's more of a list of frendships that The Mudcat has started. I know that I never would have met Genie or Amos, two wonderful picking buddies, if it hadn't for the Cat and for that I'm greatful.

Marymac and Bert (both pre-Mudcat -- in fact, it was Marymac who first told me about the site!)
Max and Pene Azul (at the old Mudcat HQ before it moved to Max's)
Naemanson (when he visited town)
?? (Dharmabum?) at the Philadelphia Folk Festival afternoon show one year

...I think that's all, though I probably met one or two more at the old Mudcat HQ (that was several years ago!). And I may have musician-friends who are Mudcatters, but if they are I don't know it!

Over 100 -- I've been keeping a "Mudcat Life List" for about 5 years now.

Some people I knew before there was a Mudcat or before they got sucked in, I mean, involved here at Mudcat.

Started meeting new 'Catters at Barry's party in November of 2000 -- we'd known Barry for many years before Mudcat existed. Then we had a party (Annual Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend "Tune It Or Die!" Music Party and Ladyslipper Festival) which just happened to occur the day after a China Sea shanty singaround -- that brought a bunch of 'Catters into our living room. And since then it's been festivals, The Getaway, gatherings instigated by Mudcat, etcet etcet.

Most of the mud cats i have met were either from
the San Francisco Folk Music Club's Camp Harmony
or Mary Garvey's Sunny Camp (or was it Rany Camp?)

including David Ingerson and Fred Maslan

and some catters who have come to my paltalk jam
i have met in person, "namely" Reggie Miles (Nobro)

But some Cats i feel as if i have met them cuz we
have been in contact thru the chat, p.m.'s and thru
e-mail and snail mail exchanges esp KatLaughing and
Sinsull.
Others have sent me their recordings for my radio
show. This place is a wonderful way to connect with
folkies on so many levels.
