For future reference:

Windows has a little applet called the "Character Map" where you can look up funny characters. When you click on a character you want, the map will show either an ASCII or Unicode character number.

ASCII numbers can be typed on the Num Pad in Word and conversion to the character glyph is automatic.

In recent Word, you can type the Unicode Number (00E8 or 0109 above) and immediately hit Alt-X and the "gyph" should show.

You can also copy text from html pages (without even going to the code version) and paste it into Word. Put your cursor immediately on the right of a character and hit Alt-X and the char should change to its Unicode (Hex) number. (Alt-X should toggle between glyph and code.)

Often, when your browser isn't set to a font that can display the correct glyph, the paste in Word and Alt-X method will still tell you what the Unicode char number was meant to be, so you can look for a font that will show it as intended.

One thing I have found is that it is usefully trainable. I can train to use made up words for my science fiction stories.

I know about the character map but a luxury that I have is that when I make up a word, I can also make up the spelling.

Are you all still happy with Dragon? I had an old version which I never did get around to using, way back in '99, I think, and have lost it, anyway. So, am looking for good VRS mainly for writing & editing in Word and writing on various websites as well as navigate same sites. I read some mixed reviews of it at Amazon. I've also heard that some people think WIN7's VRS is better. I don't have WIN7, but I'd be interested in hearing about it, too, if any of you have and use it. I have to get something quickly as I have very painful tendinitis in both index fingers which the doc says is going to take some time, therapy, and rest to heal.:-(

I must have caught some keys accidentally together last week and up came a Word voice recognition menu box which I didn't want at the time so closed. Looking for it out of curiosity I couldn't turn it up so looked in Help where every attempt brought me back to the instruction to click on the VR toolbar but I've no idea how to summon up that? (Using Windows XP)

Interestingly, I find the free Dragon app ( free or less than a pound, I forget which) on iPhone is slightly more accurate than the full blown desktop program, and you don't train it either.

Must be my voice I suppose....

gnu, I think it comes with WIN7. Trouble with that is, It'd just about require me to buy a whole new PC to have WIN7, according to my Rog.

I have no idea how useful either of these has been, but a couple of reviews of VR in Win7 sort of imply it's much better, with remarks comparing it favorably to DNS, and "much improved" over earlier Mickeysoft versions.

Well, I just tried M$'s Speech Recognition and it sucked. "Back"... "Huh?" "Back"... "Huh?"... "Forward" and it went forward... "Back"... "Huh?"... "Back you fucking piece of shit MOTHERFUCKER!"... "Huh?" And it's ridiculous when I attempt to read the commands in the instructions.

Anyone like it? If so, I am obviously doing something wrong in trying to get a feel for it. Dragon 12 can be had for a Borden but the box says Win 7 or higher and the teenage salesman says "It should work."... after he read the box. Yeah... sure. He's on commission sales. >;-) I already took back a $100 buy even tho it had a Win 8 sticker on the box.

Since I have one of their other programs, I get about three to five emails per week from the Dragon people. Since I've learned to delete those immediately I don't have a link at hand, but can note that they've been pushing a "Home" version of Dragon at about $49.95 (US). Unfortunately I haven't noticed what the "regular" price is, so can't really tell if that's a bargain.

(I also get about the same number of ads for each of about 8 other programs they make, none of which are of any interest to me.)

The point is that they don't really think their stuff is worth what they say is their "regular price" and it seems that they can only sell it at discounted prices, so shopping for a reasonable deal should be pretty easy if you want one of their "advanced versions."

(They're not the only ones who think that way.)

I suspect they have about saturated the market at full price, and need some $$$$ to keep operating and developing. Kind of like an after Christmas sale to people who weren't sure they wanted pink galoshes.
