I can tell you from experience that if you are wearing stockings you need suspenders to hold them up - that is unless you have the relatively recent ones that hold themselves up, leave unsightly marks on your upper thighs and probably don't do much for your circulation either.

Do you mean tights or suspenders? Enquiring minds need to know.

Hang on - (ouch) - suspenders without stockings would be a waste of time, stockings without suspenders would be round my ankles. Are you asking stockings with suspenders or tights. If so, I'm with Giok.
I'm old enough to remember that mini skirts came in before stockings and suspenders went out and it was not comfortable or pretty!

Actually, I have to disagree with Sooz. That was a short and glorious period in history, when the miniskirt had arrived, but stockings and suspenders were still in use. The lads used to hang around at traffic lights and cross roads, looking at girls on bikes.

Definitely a suspender man myself. Hate tights when you wake up in the morning and meet the wife coming out of the bathroom all I can think about is the Brinks Mat robbery.

as far as i know, suspenders are those things that go over your shoulders to hold up your pants...shouldn't it be "belts or suspenders"?

I haven't really experimented, but I expect that the one old pair of suspenders I have wouldn't stretch from my shoulders to my socks...and, if I tried it would probably snap back and put out my eye. So, I'll stick with a belt, thanks. I rarely wear socks in the summer anyway.

Ah, yet another example of two great nations dividede by a common language!

In the UK, "suspenders" hold up stockings, and "braces" hold up trousers.

In the US, "suspenders" hold up pants, which in the UK are what a lady wears in addition to stockings and suspenders [that is, if she *is* a lady...], while a "garter belt" is used to hold up stockings; "braces" go on the teeth of adolescent children to make them straight.

Do you ever notice if a group of women go out together, for example if one of them is getting married, it's the married ones among them that go wild. Suspenders (only button ones) for the trousers.

Shirt - Garters (metal clasp) One attaches to each of the four shirt-tails and two attach to each of your stockings.

Spend a fourteen hour day and you will still look keen, trousers-UP, stockings-UP, shirt-tail-IN.

i just remembered that in girl scouts we used to wear things around our socks with elastic and small ribbon-like flaps..

i think these look like what i have seen worn with kilts..called
garters and flashes

i found lots of pix online, but none showed close up of thes being modelled. one of these fellows has them on, though.

I used to wear stockings... they were a bit cheaper and easier to replace a leg when you got a ladder.

Trouble is, in summer, when the tops of your legs got sweaty, you'd get chaps.
