Subject: BS: Anyone want a Hobby Horse? From: Lady Policeman Date: 13 Jul 06 - 02:10 PM Pennymoor Singaround based in Tiverton area of Devon have a large black dog (about six foot across) which used to be danced along a three mile stretch of road between Morchard Bishop and Black Dog (yes, there is a village called Black Dog and guess what the village pub is called!!)accompanied by much singing and dancing. Sadly the tradition has fallen by the wayside and we have the dog taking up too much space in the barn. Does anyone need a Hobby Horse for a Morris team. It is in need of a bit of TLC. Free to a good home but must be collected. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone want a Hobby Horse? From: Mo the caller Date: 25 Jun 15 - 07:07 AM If resources are a problem and old threads waste them then the answer might be to lock threads where something is offered or wanted when they are out of date. Meanwhile a(an up to date) link to a picture of said Black Dog in it's old or new setting would be interesting. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone want a Hobby Horse? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 25 Jun 15 - 08:51 PM It is somewhat amazing how many old threads suddenly re-surface: suggests people are spending far too much time gazing at computer, tablet or smartphone screens, when they should be getting on with their lives more profitably! However, just back from the Baltic, where hobby horses are all the rage in Tallinn! Several wood-working craft shops selling them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone want a Hobby Horse? From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Jun 15 - 10:03 PM I don't think there's much reason to worry about a thread like this using bandwidth. I'm still trying to figure this all out. How does a Morris team use a hobby horse, and what does a black dog have to do with it? I encountered many Morris teams when I went to Whitby Folk Week some ten years ago, but I have to say I didn't quite figure them out. Hobby Horse? Black Dog? Hmmmm. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone want a Hobby Horse? From: vectis Date: 25 Jun 15 - 10:53 PM Black Dog is a very small village on the edge of Dartmoor near Pennymoor. It used to have a weekend sing that was great fun, egalitarian and eclectic. The pub the sing was held in, called the Black Dog, changed hands and the weekend sing moved around the local villages until it found a new home. Like many other small villages it has a legend of a ghostly large black dog that appears infrequently to scare people. The village also had a Black Dog festival with much dancing and singing and jollity. The black dog was paraded around the village. If you want to see what it looked like look up the Padstow Hobby Horses. I seem to remember that the black dog up for rehoming was a smaller version of them. |
