This is an article from our home town newspaper. Upshot is that these kids are selling lemonade to help their neighbors newborn son...multiple heart defects and Downs to help with medical costs.

It would be SO COOL if any Mudcat Angels could send money. I already have. Winfield is the home of the National Flatpick contest and Walnut Valley Festival. ALL acoustic music.

Wow, talk about timely. Just a few minutes ago I was unpacking boxes from our having moved and found a can with about two dozen rolls of pennies and other loose coins. I think I've just found a good home for them.

For those who don't know, Winfield, Kansas is the home of the Walnut Valley Music Festival. Just my lowly opinion, but perhaps Bob Redford should take a hand in the fundraising. I'll bet the Walnutheads who find out about it are giving.

Hi folks. I think it's great that the neighbour kids were motivated to do something to help. But I don't entirely see the rationale for trying to organize a broader fundraising campaign.

After all, we all have seriously ill infants in our own towns and cities... why not support them and their families, rather than focusing on one baby in Kansas who was in the newspaper?

And the article didn't say that Haydn's family doesn't have health insurance (and I think we can assume the article WOULD say that if it were the case). I realize that illness or disability usually involves some expenses or lost wages that aren't covered by insurance. Nonetheless, to me it would make more sense to direct your money and efforts to families/infants without health insurance. For example, Toronto has a "street clinic" that serves homeless pregnant women or young mothers without asking for their health cards or other ID ... and no doubt there are similar worthy causes in most cities. Or on a global scale, sending that loose change to MSF would make a bigger difference to babies at risk than it would probably make to Haydn's family.

I hope I haven't offended you, Sorcha - but there are millions of good causes that would benefit from donations, and it's worthwhile to evaluate where the money would be the most helpful.

Most of us do a little for charity when we can, just once in a while it is good to get involved in something that is a little differant to the normal pocket dipping. This one is one of those occasions, the support that these kids are going to get may just turn them into something that will have a life long effect, who knows they could go on to raise millions for charities over the next 40 years.

This is what I saw the value in, and believe should be rewarded. Yes, we all have malformed, sick, and dying people near us - probably within a stone's throw of where you sit right now. More than any of us could ever hope to "save." And we always will have until someone comes up with an immortality pill. Trying to save people is throwing money into a bottomless pit, in my (cynical) opinion.

But these kids saw a need, and selflessly decided to address it. I think generosity and compassion such as this should be nurtured. The fact that they are self motivated deserves respect as well. The predominant values in our current society as a whole, and especially in the younger set, suck big donkey. We could use more caring kids like this, and if I can send a couple bucks their way to encourage them to keep that compassion as they grow, then I'll do it.

If you think the characteristics that these kids are displaying don't have any value, then you're even colder than I, and I've been told that I have a little, black, plexiglass heart since I was in high school.

If you respect the attributes that these children display, but are too miserly to send your money to help their efforts because that particular child is too far away from you (tho why any given person is more deserving merely because of where they live is beyond me) why not drop them a postcard with a note expressing your feelings when you read their story?

Father Ted is a hilarious Irish television show, quite possibly the most hilarious I've ever seen. It's about three Irish priests who've been banished for various reasons (Father Ted for stealing collection money to send a child to Lourdes and using it for a trip to Vegas, Father Jack for being constantly drunk for 16 straight years and Father Dougal for being the most braindead person on the planet and reputedly screwing up a baptism) to the remote Craggy Island.

Dougal and Ted are talking about mysterious creatures and ghosts, and Dougal mentions that a mysterious "mud angel" in the shape of a man appears outside O'Leary's pub every night at closing time in the mud. At that moment, Father Jack walks in drunk as usual ... and covered with mud. Father Ted looks at him and says "Mystery solved."
