Subject: BS: Bush to be sued?? From: Rapparee Date: 25 Jul 06 - 12:39 PM From the Associated Press: ..."We will submit legislation to the United States Senate which will...authorize the Congress to undertake judicial review of those signing statements with the view to having the president's acts declared unconstitutional," Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said on the Senate floor. Specter's announcement came the same day that an American Bar Association task force concluded that by attaching conditions to legislation, the president has sidestepped his constitutional duty to either sign a bill, veto it, or take no action. Bush has issued at least 750 signing statements during his presidency, reserving the right to revise, interpret or disregard laws on national security and constitutional grounds.... Seems to me that if Bush doesn't like a bill or thinks it's unconstitutional he should just veto it. This really seems to be an attempt to sidestep the seperation of powers. |

And the irony is that by using signing statements instead of vetoes, Bush is able to create the illusion that he has been extremely accommodating toward Congress. Heck, he didn't veto anything until last week. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bush to be sued?? From: katlaughing Date: 25 Jul 06 - 01:59 PM That's exactly what the ABA task force said, last night on CSpan, when speaking of their findings and recommendations to the press. He should have vetoed and HAS overstepped executive bounds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bush to be sued?? From: Rapparee Date: 25 Jul 06 - 02:05 PM Could it be...might it be...that the Congress is finally getting some guts? |
Subject: RE: BS: Bush to be sued?? From: Greg F. Date: 25 Jul 06 - 06:44 PM Don't get carried away here. Congress won't do squat before the August recess & when they return after that everyone will be in "Campaign Mode" and absolutely nothing of substance will be dealt with. And the Dems- a.k.a. The Gutless Wonder Party- will still be running its stealth moderate-to-right Republican clones like Hillary. Sorry to piss in your soup... |
Subject: RE: BS: Bush to be sued?? From: Rapparee Date: 25 Jul 06 - 10:20 PM Yeah, unfortunately I agree, Greg F. But Specter is a Republican, and an influential one at that. That's the part I find interesting. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bush to be sued?? From: GUEST,michaelr Date: 25 Jul 06 - 10:23 PM Exactly, Rapaire. It is beginning to look like the real conservatives in this country have had their fill of Bush and his masters. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: BS: Bush to be sued?? From: Amos Date: 25 Jul 06 - 11:50 PM It is distinctly possible. A |
Subject: RE: BS: Bush to be sued?? From: Rapparee Date: 26 Jul 06 - 09:09 AM I dunno. Specter's got the power to do so, and I doubt he'd bring it up if it were impossible. Could be, could be. But since Amos says I've become a Republican (see MOAB) I can only think that when your party starts to turn against you, you may possibly perhaps might have done something a teeny-weeny bit wrong. |
