Not only are you all way too touchy and no fun to talk to but this is really an experiment to find out just how many Americans are actually here anymore. It seems like this forum is becoming a UK forum. It's weird but virtually every thread is peppered with references as "Rooney" "BNP" "Surrey" "Dubliners" and other crap that I have absolutely no idea what the hell anyone is even talking about.

Maybe it's just me, but is Mudcat a UK forum and I mistook it for being American, in which case I apologize, but I could have sworn when I first started coming here, it was American/Canadian--North American, let's say.

Now, it's like every thread is about UK politics, UK folk communities, UK cultural customs, UK folk artists, what is this?? Any North Americans here at all? I only came here because I thought it was American. If not, I may as well leave. I'm extremely proud of my American musical roots. I don't think Europe can even begin to compare. I think they are pale imitators (haha, that's good one!)and I see no reason to waste my time posting on a UK folk forum. I'm no anglophile. So what gives? If I get no responses, I suppose that will answer my question.

Oh, it's American all right. Hell, folk music is American. We're happy to have our British cousins playing along, but really.

Well, if I'm VERY quiet, can I just hide here for a bit, as I have no bloody interest in Rooney, the bloody BNP or Surrey either....& yeah, as for Northern Ireland, you can get the Catholics & the Prods to try & sit down over a table & discuss things, but not much hope of getting an Irishman & an Englishman to agree on anything....

This is a Universal Forum, in case ya hadn't noticed. Have a look at the

Mudcat is a forum about Folk Music. The fact that it was started by an American doesn't really mean anything. The internet has no boundaries, which I think is one of the nice things about it. There is nothing to stop Americans from posting about American folk music and if you do a search I think you will find there are plenty of messages about American songs, the American folk scene, etc. Personally I enjoy having an insight into how things are on the other side of the Atlantic, and I'm glad the Brits are here.

But you know, there's nothing to stop you from starting your own Forum with whatever membership criteria you choose. If you want a free option start a Yahoo Group called "American Folk Music Discussion". Make it members only, with you as the moderator. That way you decide if you let them in or not, and anybody who is a foreigner can be refused admission. If they somehow sneak in anyway and give themselves away by saying something like "rubbish" or "sod it", or spelling "color" as "colour", you'll be able to spot them and kick them out.

It's no use, 282...if they have a membership, you can write each a PM and beg for favors, but the threads are kinda a free-for-all. I sometimes ask for translations of arcane terms, and usually get not only interesting replies, but an education as well!

Like 282, I am American and I have noticed that many, if not most, of the postings are identifiably English and that many, many threads deal with particularly English topics. Like 282, I, often, don't know what they are talking about (I couldn't find Hull on a map. I'm not quite sure where Thurso is, either, and I've played there).
So 282's observations may be accurate but, so what? Where is it written that members with numerical names must read and respond to every thread? There are some American threads and there some American posters and, if 282 can't find a thread that addresses his or her interests, what is stopping him or her from starting a thread of his or her own?

Hey two,

don't be afraid
take a Brit post
and make it better.

Me - yank? No, but I'm not a Brit either - I come from Thessaloniki. But I was lonely on my national folk forum so I came over here. In any case you won't find me discussing Rooney (why talk about Mickey anyway?) or BNP (I'm more of a BLT man).

Robin, Hull is a myth - it doesn't exist, or at least no longer. They went and built another town on top of it. It's now Kingston upon Hull, and that's its proper name (check it out).

Katlaughing said (speaking of color vs. colour):

"LOL, Maryrff...but just to confuse things, some of us 'mericunz spell it with an yew, too!:-)"

I didn't realize that - is it a particular geographic area where this is the case? Or is it a case of individuals who spell it differently because they're Anglophiles, or old-fashioned, or whatever?

Cheers, Marion the curious former linguist

So, typical American knowledge of geography then? ALL none-yanks when refereng to 'catters from the UK. So there are only 2 countries in the world?

If you ment all UKers what about the Irish? I think you will find that they are non-UK. If you meant English why not say it? Wouldn't keep me off anyway - I am half Polish/Russian and like to spend time with my family in Illinois anyway:-)

If you want a forum just for yanks then why not start one? Either that or lighten up. Just because you can't insult people as well as you thought you could it is not the end of the world.

Thanks, John O' for helping me realize what song the title to this thread reminds me of. I found these lyrics in the aptly named website Lyriic ZZ.com

Rolling Stones
Get Off Of My Cloud
I live in an apartment on the ninety-ninth floor of my block
And I sit at home looking out the window
Imagining the world has stopped
Then in flies a guy who's all dressed up like a Union Jack
And says, I've won five pounds if I have his kind of detergent pack

I said, Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd
On my cloud, baby

The telephone is ringing
I say, "Hi, it's me. Who is it there on the line?"
A voice says, "Hi, hello, how are you
Well, I guess I'm doin' fine"
He says, "It's three a.m., there's too much noise
Don't you people ever wanna go to bed?
Just 'cause you feel so good, do you have
To drive me out of my head?"

I said, Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd
On my cloud baby

I was sick and tired, fed up with this
And decided to take a drive downtown
It was so very quiet and peaceful
There was nobody, not a soul around
I laid myself out, I was so tired and I started to dream
In the morning the parking tickets were just like
A flag stuck on my window screen

I said, Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd
On my cloud

Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Don't hang around, baby, two's a crowd

"The Rolling Stones got their name from the Howlin' Wolf blues song "Rolling Stone" - Keith Richards was a fan of the version recorded by Muddy Waters,"

See Rock Band Name Origins

I couldn't find the lyrics to that Howlin' Wolf's song [anyone got them?] but I did find this website full of other song lyrics and mp3s:

Howlin Wolf Song Index Page

Here's the lyrics to one of my favorite Howlin Wolf songs:

Wang Dang Doodle
by Willie Dixon
recording of 1962
from The Rocking Chair (Vogue 600111), copyright notice

Tell Automatic Slim , tell Razor Totin' Jim
Tell Butcher Knife Totin' Annie, tell Fast Talking Fanny
A we gonna pitch a ball, a down to that union hall
We gonna romp and tromp till midnight
We gonna fuss and fight till daylight
We gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long
All night long
All night long
All night long

Tell Kudu-Crawlin' Red, tell Abyssinian Ned
Tell ol' Pistol Pete, everybody gonna meet
Tonight we need no rest, we really gonna throw a mess
We gonna to break out all of the windows,
we gonna kick down all the doors
We gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long
All night long
All night long
All night long

Tell Fats and Washboard Sam, that everybody gonna to jam
Tell Shaky and Boxcar Joe, we got sawdust on the floor
Tell Peg and Caroline Dye, we gonna have a time
When the fish scent fill the air, there'll be snuff juice everywhere
We gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long
All night long
All night long
All night long
All night long
All night long
All night long

-snip-

This is my way of saying that I enjoy "breakin out all of the windows, and kickin down all the doors" that separate one culture from another. Thanks to Mudcat, folks can learn that "its a small world after all" by reading and exchanging comments, information, insights, or just havin fun with people in near & far away places. In doing so, one of the things we're bound to find [if our hearts & minds & spirits are open to this insight] is that in many ways -regardless of our race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, religion and other cultural indices, we have much more in common than we have that is different.

So let's keep on pitchin 'a wang dang doodle all night long' and all day long too!

And let's bring others into this big tent so that they can add their flavor to the mix! If people come to Mudcat for positive reasons-to share, to learn, to relax, to give & to receive emotional support, to to enjoy themselves with play on words and limerick games and others, to meet old friends and make new friends, then the more the merrier. 'Walk right in, sit right down', make yourself at home.

But if you come here to muddy the water, and start some stuff or add some mess to the pot that's already stirring-if you come here to start some trouble, then you can let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

Thread is the name of a deadly phenomenon that appears throughout Anne McCaffrey's series of science-fiction novels about the fictional planet Pern. It consists of a rain of threadlike silver filaments of a space-borne mycorrhizoid spore that devours all organic matter that it touches. These filaments bridge the space gap between Pern and their origin, a rogue planet called the Red Star, when the two planets are close enough. ...

I have a little problem here. I'm English, married to a Mainer and living in Maine, which is part of New England. Would I be allowed to contribute to the new Mudcat order as set up by our friend?

I, personally, have met a lot of American 'Catters in the past couple of years and see plenty of American interest threads on the board. I have also learned a great deal more about the USA, its people and history than I ever have and I think the same is true for my American friends.

People talk about a 'global community' and, whilst that may be difficult to achieve from a political point of view I think that, here on Mudcat, we've got it in microcosm.

Halifax still has it's gibbet, if 282RA wants to try it out I'm sure we could adjust it to fit his XXL size head.

9 out of 10 obits here are people I never heard of. Mostly Brits, is that a problem? Hell no, I just move on.
This place would be not nearly as much fun without the Brits, and I'm damn glad they are here.
If you suffer from geocentricity, there is a cure, it's called travel.
