Those who let things happen,

Noise proves nothing. Often a hen who has merely laid an egg cackles as if she had laid an asteroid.

Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities. Truth isn't.

Good breeding consists of concealing how much we think of ourselves and how little we think of the other person.

I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way.

I'm opposed to millionaires, but it would be dangerous to offer me the position

Never tell the truth to those unworthy of it
.
The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.

It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either.

It usually takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Loyalty to petrified opinion never yet broke a chain or freed a human soul.

All the above were by Mark Twain.

Miltary exercises and combat missions are on a par with the discipline and decisions of your average 10 year old

What luck for rulers, that men do not think.

One hot day does not a Summer make. (especially in UK)

Sometimes you have to lose a battle in order to win the war.

All that glitters is not gold.

1. A closed mouth gathers no foot.
2. All generalisations are wrong, including this one.
3. All kids are gifted, some just open their packages earlier than others.
4. All living things are really just temporary entropy anomalies.
5. All men are of the same mould, but some are mouldier than others.
6. Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.
7. An apple a day keeps the doctor away: an onion a day keeps everybody away!

Took years of googling, but I found the author! Knew it was something I heard in my youth!

"Indispensable Man"

Saxon White Kessinger

©1959

Sometime when you're feeling important;
Sometime when your ego's in bloom
Sometime when you take it for granted
You're the best qualified in the room,

Sometime when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple instructions
And see how they humble your soul;

Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up to the wrist,
Pull it out and the hole that's remaining
Is a measure of how you'll be missed.

You can splash all you wish when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop and you'll find that in no time
It looks quite the same as before.

The moral of this quaint example
Is do just the best that you can,
Be proud of yourself but remember,
There's no indispensable man.

"Indispensable Man" was originally published in "The Nutmegger Poetry Club under the name Saxon Uberuaga. It has also been published in "Boots" in Spring 1993, in "The Country Courier" 1996, "Rhyme Time" in Winter 2000, and in "Golden Times" in August 2003.

Saxon White Kessinger is a member (and past president) of Gem State Writers' League and a member of Idaho Writers' League. She is an award winning writer, receiving Idaho Writers' League "2003 Lifetime Achievement Award," "Writer of the Year" in 1992, 1995, and 2002 and "Poet of the Year" in 1999 and 2000 from her Idaho State Leagues. She has published various poetry offerings and many articles in various newspapers and magazines.

1. People who have given us their complete confidence believe that they have a right to ours. The inference is false, a gift confers no rights.

2. He that humbleth himself wishes to be exalted.

3. The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.

4. There are no facts, only interpretations.

5. Morality is but the herd-instinct in the individual.

6. No one talks more passionately about his rights than he who in the depths of his soul doubts whether he has any.

7. Without music, life would be a mistake.

8. Anyone who has declared someone else to be an idiot, a bad apple, is annoyed when it turns out in the end that he isn't.

9. In large states public education will always be mediocre, for the same reason that in large kitchens the cooking is usually bad.

10. The man of knowledge must be able not only to love his enemies but also to hate his friends.

11. A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.

12. We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the way in which it has been expressed is unsympathetic to us.

13. No victor believes in chance.

14. Convictions are more dangerous foes of truth than lies.

15. Talking much about oneself can also be a means to conceal oneself.

16. It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.

17. The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude.

18. The future influences the present just as much as the past.

19. The most common lie is that which one tells himself; lying to others is relatively an exception.

20. I counsel you, my friends: Distrust all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful.

(All above from Frederich Nietzche)
