Did anybody catch this? I was coming back from a very long week of debauchery and didn't take in what I was listening to until too late to hear who it was about... very interesting stuff, though...

The piece was called Solidarity Forever, and here are the lyrics for that song. But they talked about Hallelujiah I'm A Bum, so it wasn't all about working!

All about the imminent publication of "The Big Red Songbook" -- a compilation of all the "Little Red Songbooks" of various years.

I missed the beginning, but Tom called me in to listen to most of it.

The whole piece should be available to download and listen to from the NPR website. It was a nicely done piece and I'm looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

Monday's "All Things Considered" --

Here's what it said at www.NPR.org (I searched for "Big Red Songbook" and it came up first) --

Industrial Workers' Songbook Gets Big Update
by Rachel Goodman

All Things Considered, September 4, 2006 · Music and singing has always been integral to the Industrial Workers of the World, a universal union for labor created in 1905. Since its creation in 1905, the IWW has published a Little Red Songbook with music that has been sung and played at rallies and demonstrations ever since.

Some of the songs have achieved anthem status like "Solidarity Forever," and others have been popular successes like "Hallelujah, I'm a Bum."

Folklorist Archie Green has compiled songs from all 39 editions of the Little Red Songbook into The Big Red Songbook.

There was a piece on All Things Considered last Sunday on the new book called "Work Songs", where the author, Ted Gioia (I think that's right), talks about the history of work songs.

I think they were doing something about labor songs each night of the weekend. It might be worth a search of each evening's program to see if that was the case. I didn't catch much programming over the weekend, and every time they did a teaser for the program discussed here I was ready, but it took them too long to get around to it. :-/

Oops, my mistake. You cannot hear the whole broadcast there. But you can hear Joe Glazier singing Solidarity Forever.

The whole "All Things Considered" piece should be available to download and listen to -- search for "Big Red Songbook" which is what it announced.

I'm dashing off to work and can't do the blue clicky right now.
