I'm feeling really depressed right now b/c all the people my age are into rock and rap and 'alternative'. Are there any other folks out there in the 20-30 age bracket that like good old-fashioned folk music? I'm talking Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, etc....?

Hey, you're not alone. I'm 19 and listen to Rev. Davis, John Hurt, Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk etc.. I think that there are more and more people our age becoming interested in folk music in general. Music on the radio is becoming so slick and watered down, folk music is an excellent "alternative."

Sarah,

Yes there are. They are in all the usual places. Lurking among us and going about everyday life like normal folks. But some thing gives them away to those of us who know where to look and listen. A young women will be heard humming " Diamonds and Rust" in a laundramat or a guy behind the counter at Micky D's will be caught whistling " Roll on Columbia" or "American Pie" and their cover will be blown. As they take the ridicule of their peers another young man or woman will have seen and heard it all and they will wait. When the time is right the eavesdroppers will contact the hidden folkies and as them to join their secret cabals. Kids who meet at night in secret places and play accoustic intruments without picks and trade songs of love and death and heroic actions.

Yes Sarah, they are out there. Look and listen.

Show me a prison, show me a jail,

Show me a prisoner who's face is growing pale,

And I'll show you a young man with so many reasons why,

There but for fortune may go you, or I.

Don Meixner

Hey thanks guys. It's so nice to know I'm not the only person who knows that the best music came from the '60s-17, 18, and 1960's. Oh- and Mr. Meixner- have you considered a career in writing?

O Wise Ones- As long as we're being absurd, does anyone know of a chat room where us radical Gen-X folkies can meet? Sure would be fun to hear your voices. Or at least see the digital version of them. Oh, and Mr. Meixner-anyone who can use 'cabal' correctly in a sentence must not have too big a problem w/spelling. :)

Hi, Kitty ... Welcome to the Mudcat. Go to the "create a thread" link on the main forum page, and you're likely to get your question answered if you ask it in a separate thread. To change the subject ... It's so good to hear that younger folks are keeping the traditional scene alive! Twenty years ago, when I was fifteen, I used to think I was the only one out there, but now I know there's a rich community of folkies and 'catters who love the music too. Cheers, Teresa

Bill D pointed us to a spellchecker for text input boxes (such as the forum message box) some time ago. It includes dictionaries for most European languages as well as UK and US English. You can get it here. Doesn't help with translating American and British idiom into their transatlantic counterpart though!

Welcome aboard Sarah, and Betty.

Peter, of Peter, Paul and Mary fame, was quoted recently as saying (and I wish I could remember the source) that folk music was alive and well and living in (are you ready for this?) Rap Music. That sure expands the definition of folk music somewhat, doesn't it? And could you imagine the likes of Burl Ives and Ice T sharing a stage together? Too much!

Why of course Bert! We've all known some young person who is very mature, but what's the fun in that? As the saying goes, Youth is wasted on the Young. And thanks to "A Celtic Harper" on another thread, I've found the perfect test site. Are your speakers on? Then go to the Immaturity Test Site.......If you can dig it, CONGRATULATIONS...You're immature...and welcome to the club!

Of course their are young ones here, where have you been sarah? I wouldn't call some of those '60s groups you named folk though they are good once in a while. Your spell checker looked interesting up there, whoever pointed me to it, but I'm running a solaris sparc lynx system, not a windows x86 netscape system. I have no hope of getting such things running on this system. the internet has always been this way, thousands of subtilly incompatable comptuers, each of which speaks it's own language all talking to each other. Lots of fun if your a linguist.

You are in good company Sarah. Still in my 30's, and have been living the folk tradition since My eldest sis brought home Joni Mitchel and Donovan!( In LP format of course!!) From there I explored traditional folk from the British isles ie June Tabor, Maggie Boyle, Chieftans,Richard Thompson, etc. Now, I work on original comp ( yes including protest songs!) and am influenced by the songwriters of Canadian folk scene ie James Keeleghan, and the late Stan Rodgers I do have trouble finding those who are interested in this kind of music- no matter what the age because I live in a rural -primarily french speaking part of the country( Canada). That's why THE MUDCAT IS THE GREATEST!!!*SMILE*

For years and years I thought of myself as being 19 years old, until one day recently I realised I now think of myself as being about 30. (I was born 47 years ago - but that doesn't count!) I suppose this is what they mean about growing up...

Years ago I read a short story by Robert Heinlein. One of the two principal characters explains to the other how when she was a kid grown-ups used to say things like "you'll understand when you're older". It made her think that being grown-up was a pretty miserable business, with people understanding and knowing about all these depressing things that kids can't comprehend; so she decide she was never going to grow up. I've often felt like that too! I'm determined never to act my age until I'm sure I can grow old disgracefully.

As far as spelling is concerned, I've always been little shot of perfect. It's not because of any conscious action on my part, it's just a gift - not the one I would have picked as first choice if my Fairy Godmother had asked! Typing - now that's a difrrent matter!

Steve

I know what you mean Steve, I need the light behind me and people to be shortsighted to get away with 28 these days, but luckily I'm getting more immature by the day.

I'm getting worried about the physically young though, here in NZ they seem to be a very PC, "mature" lot, worried about their grades, and more concerned about getting a job with the large corporates than trashing or burning their offices! In the five years my eldest has been at university there's only been one occupation and a few protest marches that didn't even duff up one copper!

Could be they are just rebelling against their parents I suppose. (grin)

It's just my fingers that have problems with spelling, notme!

Wow Steve! Only in this forum could we find away to relate Robert Heinlein to folk music. Was that story "Podkayne of Mars" by any chance. I read it about 35 years ago so the memory may be slim. By the way, if you are a Heinlein fan, who was Reisling patterned after?

Random notes: Those hamsters dance great to the Chess Records show on "Mississippi Crossroads". Somehow I don't want to hear the music on that site.

As for "why would anyone create a page like that?", well probably to practice animations, provoke hilarity, and appeal to anyone who still gets involved in mind-altering substances.....

Probably was from Podkayne of Mars, although Heinlein was a pretty strange and dubious character.

You mean Rhysling, the Blind Singer of the Spaceways? Do you have an answer to that question, Don? The easy answer would be Woody Guthrie, but I can't offhand think of any pre-50's itinerant minstrels who were blind accordion players who misused the "spaceman in distress" clause to deadhead around the solar system on any passing freighter. Since the 60's of course, they're too numerous to mention, especially if you substitute a guitar for the accordion.

Bill,

Woody is the obvious one, I only wondered if you had heard difinitively. Some place I have a photo of Mac McClintock playing an accordion, perhaps it is meant to be him. Substitute rockets for steamers and the distressed seamans act and this story could be based in some very earthly fact. Yes its "Noisy" Rhysling, I reread the very story last nite. I think all Heinlein's musician types were Accordion players, even Lazarous Long. Perhaps Heinlein was himself. But thats a different thread in a different forum.

Sarah,

The stories we are referencing were writen by Robert A Heilein. The Story in particular was "The Green Hills of Earth". But also try "Methuselah's Children" "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" "Time Enough For Love" "Starship Troopers" "Farnham's Freehold" and "The Glory Road". Heinlein was one of the best science fiction writers of the century. Even his trash was better that most people's best.

Don.
