Subject: Just found Mudcat too From: GUEST,Popinjay Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:31 AM I've just found Mudcat too, well for about a week or so. I've tried to make new friends, but unlike ositojuanito have struggled somewhat. I even tried creating a new thread to get to know people but I was just abused by the majority. Is it because I am 'just' a Guest? What am I doing wrong? Does anyone out there have a few kind words to say? |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Gern Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:38 AM Not everyone here is psychotic, obsessed with some particular controversy or possessing musical megalomania. Try to keep that in mind as you meet those that are. This is generally a friendly and supportive place with lots of nice people. Come on in! |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: GUEST,Popinjay Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:40 AM Thanks Gern. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: wysiwyg Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:40 AM Sure, Popinjay, welcome to Mudcat. I have not noticed any of your posts in particular, but there are some sore toes in the Mudcat community and it can be easy to accidentally tread on them. If you have unintendedly developed a bad rep, SOME folks have found it useful to work with Joe Offer to change their membership name so people can have a chance to form new associations with the name and that makes a chance to start over. Others have apologized (via PM or sometimes openly in a thread) for whatever set people off and tried to understand what happened and to learn from it. It's also helpful to community-building when new members join the effort to contribute to the music side of the place by helping to answer unanswered lyric requests, and so forth. People who contribute in that fashion tend to get cut a lot of slack, even when they occasionally bloviate or offend. :~) A good way to learn communnity cultures is to hang around quietly at first and soak up all the unwritten stuff. I didn't do that when I came, and I paid for it. Just my 2 cents, and YMMV. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: GUEST Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:44 AM Your first thread was this: "Subject: Professional Folksinger, but not Proud of It From: GUEST,Popinjay Date: 20 Sep 06 - 04:58 PM Well why should all the proud folksingers have a place to post and not the ones who aren't proud or might even be a little bit ashamed. This thread is for you, step forward and post. I myself am not a professional folksinger and am neither proud or not proud of this (lean towards the not proud)." I took you for a troll. If you're not, welcome to Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Scrump Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:46 AM Well, no-one welcomed me to the group - and they still haven't. After all I've done, the heartless b*****ds ;-) I wouldn't worry about all that 'welcoming' stuff GUEST,Popinjay - just join in! |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: GUEST Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:46 AM And if you are a troll, I hope you saw the post that was so quickly deleted. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: wysiwyg Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:49 AM Well, damn, Scump, welcome you too! :~) I have a special fondness for your membername as it reminds me of a late friend's hilarious story about scrumpin' during childhood. In fact I believe I posted his story here once upon a time. Seems the vicar and he had to reach some kind of reconciliation over it. :~) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Mo the caller Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:50 AM It's quite painless to sign in as a member. I didn't see anything wrong with your thread, but I suppose if you criticise someone else people wouldn't expect you to mind critcism. No gain in being over-sensitive anyway. My philosophy is "If you insult me and I am offended, you win. If you insult me and I assume you don't mean it, I win. If I see an insult that you didn't intend, we both lose.So I assume it's a joke." |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: GUEST Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:51 AM Hi, Scrump. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Mo the caller Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:52 AM The thread I refer to was about a so called folk entertainer |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Big Mick Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:53 AM Popinjay, I don't know you, but if you are truly a new visitor, please accept a hearty welcome. Let me tell you why I think you are getting a different response. Because the thread you have started bears all the hallmarks of a troll post. One would note that on another new thread, there is another "new member" complaining about the welcome someone else got. I have been here a lot of years, and that is not usual. There is a group of trolls out there for whom this place must not be a friendly joint with a great reputation. Yours is just the type of post that they would set up a conflagration with. These are usually GUESTS who use multiple personalities to set up conflict. They often adopt a personality that seems innocuous and nice, and harmless. They then use that to start a flame war. That is why you probably got the reception you got. If I may make a suggestion, and you are not a troll, why don't you join? Use the name Popinjay, and just start a thread to say hello and introduce yourself. Let's hear what area of music or singing is your preferred area. Tell us if you are interested in collecting, history, whatever. I think you will see a different reaction. This is a friendly place, but folks are getting tired of certain things and because of that they are a bit defensive. Welcome, and enjoy. Mick |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: katlaughing Date: 26 Sep 06 - 11:53 AM I thought you came from a similar world to Penelope Rutledge's. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: MMario Date: 26 Sep 06 - 12:02 PM Hi popinjay! I tried to look up you posts to see who had abused you and where - but I can't find any record of it, so I'm a little confused. The types of humour found here can be quite diverse - and off-putting to some who aren't used to it - but for the most part this *is* a friendly bunch of people. That is not to say any of us don't have off days and snarly moods. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: open mike Date: 26 Sep 06 - 12:41 PM walk right in , sit right down, baby let your hair hang down.... and if you join in as a member, then you can get in on the chat room and get and send personal messages to others. welcome and enjoy. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Sep 06 - 12:46 PM Is this not BS material? |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Mr Yellow Date: 26 Sep 06 - 01:06 PM Popinjay It is wise to lurk a-while and get the flavour of the community before posting - you can see people & how they operate - eg phrase badly and get mis-interpreted. I don't think the one-on-one kind of conversation works here unless you join and can PM people (bit like e-mails but only your handle needs to be known). Public conversations attract trolls and misanthropes. That's human nature. Try a looking at more popular forum and see the flak fly! We are relatively benign here (as a whole). You have to ignore inanity. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: GUEST Date: 26 Sep 06 - 01:25 PM "You have to ignore inanity." There is no reason to completely ignore inanity. Go to the 85 billion thread. We welcome every inane comment you have. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Pompy Date: 26 Sep 06 - 04:06 PM Thanks for your welcome and excellent advice, I'll try to serve an apprenticeship period before jumping in at the deep end in future. I am sorry if i have lead some of you to believe I might be a 'troll' (a new word to me) and to show you that this is not my intention have become a member. See you around (though expect a bit of 'B' grade humour occasionally) Now where's that left handed screwdriver? |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: beardedbruce Date: 26 Sep 06 - 04:10 PM "B" grade humor? We really don't require an IMPROVEMENT over what we have now.... Welcome, and join in whenever you have something to say. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: MMario Date: 26 Sep 06 - 04:14 PM *grin* bruce beat me to it; I was just thinking "B" grade humour would be a step up from the usual! |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Malc R Date: 26 Sep 06 - 04:18 PM Glad you haven't taken offence at any of the negative responses to your virgin post, and have become a member - a warm welcome and I hope you get much pleasure out of the forum. Mal |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Gervase Date: 26 Sep 06 - 04:31 PM Ah, humour rather than humor. That's a start! Welcome, pull up a chair and start throwing eggs at The Shambles. It's not compulsory, you understand; it's just that everyone seems to do it. He's a good sort. though - and right-on when it comes to the ludicrous UK licensing laws. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Roughyed Date: 26 Sep 06 - 06:45 PM This can be a very intimidating forum. The level of knowledge and expertise here can be overwhelming and you can post something quite innocently and get dumped all over and made to feel stupid. But to do that you have to give a XXXX. This is a great site for knowledge, opinion and fun. If someone seems to think they are better than you for any reason, ignore them. If they put you down rather than help, ignore them. Real Mudcatters are encouraging and enthusiastic to meet fellow spirits. Welome and enjoy! |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Bernard Date: 26 Sep 06 - 07:14 PM 'You cannot insult me if I do not respect your opinion'. Always worth remembering! |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Azizi Date: 26 Sep 06 - 08:21 PM "You cannot insult me if I do not respect your opinion". Imo, sometimes that's true, and sometimes it's not. There are times when it is appropriate to ignore people who insult you. However, there are other times [such as the case with the reports about the referents used by the current Senator from Virginia] when people need to be taken to task for their insults. To ignore those types of insults because you don't respect the other person [or the other person's opinions] can cause great harm. For instance, imagine if this man would have become the next US president. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Azizi Date: 26 Sep 06 - 08:41 PM Btw, welcome to Popinjay and all other new Mudcat members and guests. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 26 Sep 06 - 09:57 PM Welcome Popinjay. Thanks for becoming a member. Don't worry about keeping quiet until you get the lay of the system. It's not really a big deal. Troll is actually a fairly old term in the internet community. It doesn't refer to the evil creatures of myth. The term has to do with people who, like fishermen, troll a line (in this case a message) in hopes of catching something. These trolls think they are doing something wonderful, but in reality the take up space nd bandwidth and maybe like the mythological beasts are of low intelligence. That may not be, but the impression they leave is that. Trolls tend to, in the internet community, write a message that incites others to respond. Usually reating heated conversations that waste resources of the system(s) involved. You don't SEEM to be a troll, so ask questions, start threads and help answer some of the requests. There are plenty of Song Reuests and Tune Reuests which need answers. Check some of those out in the PermaThreads |

Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: The Shambles Date: 27 Sep 06 - 07:20 PM Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: John 'Giok' MacKenzie - PM Date: 26 Sep 06 - 12:46 PM Is this not BS material? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Although there is no editing comment to explain why it was judged or who judged it – by virtue of the fact that this thread has been relegated to the BS section – it would appear that it has been so judged. Along with this one When was Mudcat lost Unlike the following – which by virtue of the fact that it remains where it was posted – has been judged to be music related. Just found Mudcat |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Mr Red Date: 28 Sep 06 - 07:59 AM The most important thing is to try to respond rather react, and if a GUEST looks like they are not entering into the spirit leave them. Arguing with a GUEST with no name is a fruitless exercise - just any reaction is all they want from you. I try to discuss what I feel to the ether rather than reply directly to Trolls. And you will find people gratuitously promote their own website - a low tactic if you ask me. |
Subject: RE: Just found Mudcat too From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Sep 06 - 08:46 AM Popinjay- I never asked to be welcomed and so far no one has asked that I leave. Not bad, all in all, for my first website interactive experience. Welcome aboard! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
