I believe the correct lyrics for the first verse are,

A thousand broad leagues of Atlantic between,

Does anyone have the correct words for the second line of the second verse.

Though rivers are deeper and mountains are talller,

Thank you for this I have been searching fior these lyrics for ages.
One or two corrections:Verse 1 line 2 should read " A thousand broad leagues of Atlantic between"
Verse 1 last line : "My Motherland Eireann ,the ocean's own queen"

I recent got a tape made in 1977 of my now deceased aunt singing this;(in Clonmel): Some words are difficult to make out but the following is my best effort:


BEAUTIFUL EIREANN

Refrain:
Beautiful Eireann childhood's sweet home
How fondly I love you (thee) wherever I roam;
Suir's lovely valley, clothed in green;
The brightest in Eireann, the ocean's own queen (2).

Verse 1
Tho' far, far away from my darling Tipperary
A thousand Broadways and (?) between
In spirit I visit when cheery or weary;
My mother, my Eireann,the ocean's own queen (sic) (2).

Verse 2
Tho' rivers are deeper and mountains are taller,
This is the largest full freighted (?) sail on.

Thanks martin for your efforts. I have quizzed some of my in-laws and have part of the chorus. how accurate this is I dont know as there was doubt over some of the lines.

The phrase is probably "Beautiful Erin" - note spelling. A quick search shows one song of that title. It's not the one you seek, Im afraid but it's interesting all the same! Beautiful Erin

Looking for the lyrics for this song which is sung by my father-in-law who is now in very poor health. I have a few of the words but they are jumbled up. I suspect in originates somewhere around south tipperary area as it contains the line "Suir's lovely valleys". I would also hope to find a sound file of the melody or a lead to a recording as i'm a bit unsure of the exact tune.

Tanners you could be right about Frank Patterson Singing Beautiful Eireann, I have most of Patterson`s CDs and they do not include that song, Phillipa that line is from Beautiful Ireland sung by the Brollys.

Firstly, I must thank everyone who sent in answers to my query about BEAUTIFUL EIREANN and secondly I must apologise for my silence on the matter as my Internet was down for a few days. Here is the chorus.

BEAUTIFUL EIREANN, CHILDHOOD'S SWEET HOME,

I can get the complete lyrics if anyone is interested. I understand FRANK PATERSON made a recording of it some years ago. What I am interested in is the origin of the song. Who wrote it and where he or she came from.
It is sung frequently here in our part of the country which is the Suir Valley but it may not have it's origins here as often happens with lyrics--changed to suit the locale.

Mná na hÉireann = women of Ireland and I do not think that is what Tanner seeks!(if you are interested, I think there is a translation on an older Mudcat thread)

Although I do know a line "Beautiful, beautiful Erin, Emerald gem of the sea" and the tune that phrase goes with, I don't remember more of that song.

So, does MNA NA H'EIREANN translate as "Beautiful Erin/Eire/Ireland" then? Have we found the song we were looking for? Or maybe we've found the Irish original for which the requester wants an English translation?

It would be nice if Tanners would return and give us a clue.

In case it wasn't obvious, I was trying to use grammar as a clue as to whether Tanners had reported the song title correctly. Maybe we should be looking for BEAUTIFUL ERIN.

Googling on BEAUTIFUL ERIN turns up lots of hits but they are mostly not about music. (More about, uh, photography, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more!)

Just been reading an account of an incident on one of the 19C. polar expeditions when, on St. Patrick's Day, a new sledge was "launched" by an Irish crew member, wrapped in a green banner and called "Eriu" (the sledge, not the...)! I first assumed that the author had misread McClintock's handwritten journal and that it was in fact "Erin" - but then discovered that Eriu was the name of a mythical goddess personification of - Ireland. Eire/Eireann/Erin may well derive from that root.

Beautifil Eireann is combining a Gaelic noun with an English adjective.
The two languages do not combine well as in Gaelic the adjective is usually after the noun.

Jim: I did some more research on the matter and found the following in an edition of the Guardian newspaper.

".....it is derived from the words "iar innis", which is Irish (Gaelic) for "western island"; those words became "Eireann" and then "Eire"."

It is just possible that the author of the song could possibly be refering back to its ancient name i.e. "Beautiful Iar Innis". Just a thought.

If so, the song title BEAUTIFUL EIREANN would seem ungrammatical.

Which, of course, doesn't prove that such a song doesn't exist.
