Have you seen the exciting changes at NOMAD? The new website is up and the performance grid has been posted. It's going to be another great festival of traditional music and dance and I am happy to be part of it. Frank and I will be doing "Songs from the Attic" on Saturday at 7:00 with Jerry Rasmussen, and we'll be doing "Songs of the Civil War Era" Saturday at 8:00 with ShoreGrass. (That's gonna be a brisk walk from one room to the next!)

This festival is in New Haven, CT (about halfway between NYC and Boston) and happens this year on November 3-5. There are a few mudcatters performing including the Patons who will be there with their Folk Legacy booth, the Woodchucks, who else?

Live music events like this are worth supporting and well worth the trip. It's all done by volunteers, including the performances. I have no stake except that it's close to home for me and I enjoy it every year, so I want to see it live long and prosper!

There seems to be a much bigger contingent of mudcat folkies in the DC Getaway area than the New Haven area. I know there are tons of New England folkies, after seeing around 5000 people at NEFFA two years ago. NOMAD in New Haven is smaller than NEFFA (which is moving to Mansfield, MA), but has a good-sized crowd of musicians and dancers, most of whom are apparently not mudcatters. Or at least they don't feel inclined to comment here!

Anyway, I'm thinking about NOMAD tonight because I'm trying to decide which songs to do...

I usually do go to NEFFA except for the past few years because of ailments & have always wanted to get the excuse to do Nomad but not this year, I'll be at the getaway instead. I did notice that you were playing there, was it last year, & was thinking that if I could've made it, I'd make a point to see & hear you there. Maybe next year?

I'm so looking forward to the addition of their fiddle and whistle to this program, and we might even get a special vocal arrangement of Goober Peas! Hi Folks,

Barbara is too modest. She forgot to mention that NOMAD's wonderful new website is her creation. Bravo to Barbara for doing that. I'll add my words urging everyone to check out the schedule grid. It's chock full. We couldn't fit any more workshops if we wanted to.

Important note: We need some more sound techies. Anyone experienced in running a sound board, visit the web site for info on volunteering. We have a very generous free-admission policy for experienced sound volunteers.

It's still on, Karen. It will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and Barbara and Frank Shaw will be there, helping to dust off some old songs..

The Church and Street Corner Harmonies workshop with the Gospel Messengers and the a capella Doo Wop group, the Sentinels will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Sentinels will be showcasing songs from their recently released CD, and I'll be dusting a couple of old songs off from my most recent CD, Back When I Was Young.

Hope you can spring free from the Folk-Legacy table.

What a great festival. I took lots of pictures, and had some help from others (Duane, Vicky, who else did I snag to take a few?) which I'll put online soon.

I don't know where Saturday went, what with running up and down the halls and seeing lots of friends and hearing lots of music. So we went back for a bit more on Sunday and were glad we did.

If you've never heard Sandy Paton do his original re-make of "Home on the Range" you NEED to hear it!

Vixen was asked to ham it up on "Goober Peas" and she gave us CORNED ham with the peas. She now OWNS the song. Who else could do it?

Jerry has written some really wonderful songs, and I'm glad he dusted off a few for the "Songs from the Attic."

I heard more about Karen K's most interesting folk music project which she will probably unveil soon...

Got a few more corrections to my background of some Civil War songs. Thanks to Duane, I found out that the pot, not the handle of the Big Dipper, points to the north star. Or did I get it wrong again? bbc, nice to see you again.

For Barbara Shaw--The stars that form the side of the bowl opposite the handle are called the pointer stars. If you imagine a line extending through them and out into space beyond the top of the bowl, it points to Polaris, the North Star. This occurs regardless of the orientation of the Big Dipper asterism. The Drinking Gourd, the Big Dipper asterism, is a clear reference for finding north.

I found about this web site from someone I met at last years' NOMAD!

What a great festival - I wish more people had come. I wanted to hear the Sentinals/Gospel Messengers but got distracted by 2 other things.
I heard the next event in the room - "west gallery" music - what a neat idea! i wish someone here did it. Maybe I can go to Boston for their pub sing.
I'm glad there was lots of "traditional" music instead of lots of commercial or "folk-pop" music (which I don't like as much). And I was glad to see all the different kinds of dancing - I've been to some big festivals with not that much variety. A couple of the bands were really great.

The NOMAD committee spent countless hours organizing this event and they did a great job. I was on their committee mailing list because of some work I did for their new website, so I know how many sub-committees and meetings and lists and arrangements there were for hospitality, publicity, vendors, performers, equipment rentals, refreshments, program booklets, scheduling grids, shuttle buses, etc. etc. etc. there were. Wow!

For you Getaway folks, we missed you. I see that there will be a conflict again in 2007 but not in 2008, so maybe we'll see you then.

I for one am already looking forward to NOMAD 2007.

Since this NOMAD thread seems to be more active, here's what I posted on the "other" NOMAD thread...(maybe a Joe-clone could combine them?)

Reynaud and I had, as always, a wonderful time. NOMAD is right up there with Old Songs as a favorite festival. We were only able to be there from 2:30 to 9:30 this year, instead of open to close.
We are grateful we had the opportunity to visit and play with as many friends as we did!

The big focus for us was "Songs from the Civil War" with ShoreGrass (Barbara, Frank, Paul and Dave). Between our gig schedule and their gig schedule there was no possibility of getting together to rehearse before NOMAD, so Barbara sent us their CD, and we learned the material at home. Fortunately, Reynaud is comfortable with that sort of thing; I tend to panic when I feel under-rehearsed. In the event, however, it all went fine! (Added Bonus--we now have several new songs that we can add to our Civil War set!)

To all the Mudcats we didn't get a chance to talk to/jam with--may we meet again real soon, with more time to visit!

I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures!

I had a wonderful time on the Saturday at NOMAD . What a gem !! THanks you to all who worked so hard again to make it magic !   
                The West Gallery singing is just amazing . Bruce Randel has a great sense of humor and humanity . That music just transports me somewhere joyful .
                  The Chantey Blast was great as well . The man who ran it was the guy who runs the shanty singing at Mystic ( I Think he said) but more interesting was how much back ground he had on each song ..What a well of knolege and he could bellow in the best way ..
                Everyone I heard was just wonderful   !
                I had to pick up my daughter from her weekend at Hole In The Wall Gang Camp in Ashford Ct . so I missed the Sunday gathering .. i hope all had fun ...

Belated addition--I was very glad, as usual, to be at NOMAD. I just participate in 3 weekends in the Northeastern US each year--NEFFA in the spring, Old Songs in June, & NOMAD in the fall. I see a similar group of people at these events & enjoy catching up on news (usually quickly, between sessions), sharing hugs & music. I find, each year, that I have more conflicts about which sessions to attend, as I get to know more & more of the folks performing. That's a good thing, though; it means I'm growing, musically. I was delighted, as usual, to see Guy Wolff, Animaterra, Vicki & Tim, the Shaws, the 'chucks, the Patons, karen k, Kath Westra & I apologize if I've forgotten anyone. I got a big kick out of Jerry Rasmussen & the doo wop group he introduced to NOMAD this year. I wish you all could have heard them. They were amazing! And sitting by Jerry's sweetheart, Ruth, made it all the more special! I love the spontaneous harmony singing that takes place at NOMAD. I also spent 2 hours on shape note singing. For me, this year, however, the high point was getting to know 3 people a little better--Pamela from Ithica, Cindy Bean, & Robbie Wedeen. What sweet women & great performers! I enjoyed each of them tremendously. For me, these weekends build relationships in the folk community as well as letting me mellow out & learn new music. Thanks to all involved!

I agree with Barbara, these weekends are a joyous time
to build relationships in the folk community. For me,this year's NOMAD
was very much about connecting and reconnecting with people -
some of whom I've known for close to 20 years (more dancers
than singers... but that's where I was then)

I thought the turn out was at least as good as last year,
even with the Getaway conflict. I hope that NOMAD can
survive another year. 2007 will be their 20th anniversary,
so I expect that the volunteers will make the effort.
But I know that financially it's touch and go.

BBC (and other mudcat friends), I hope to see you at NEFFA.
Sounds like the new venue will have challenges and potential.

Well, it turns out that Karen K was right and the 2006 photos were not showing. It seems that Yahoo "improved" their photo album processing, and the 2004 and 2005 photos were uploaded under the old system, so I needed to set "permissions" again to have the 2006 photos available for public viewing. Or is that more than you wanted to know?

Try looking again and let me know if there are no 2006 photos.
