This program that should be terrific. Peter O'Toole plays the elderly Casanova on "Masterpiece Theatre" on PBS tonight, October 8th, and also October 15th.

Yup. It'll be on here in about four and a half hours. I'll have the snacks ready well ahead of time, and the remote within easy reach.

Well, if he topes, it doesn't seem to bother his acting much.

Jeez, GUEST, I'm sorry somebody ran over your dog.

Ye gawds! As I'm watching I suddenly realize it's all too familiar. Then it hit me. I read Casanova's History of my Life back when I was in high school!

Uh . . . it wasn't a class assignment.

I thought Peter O'Toole was splendid. It was a bit strange that the director chose to portray the young Casanova a bit like a modern cockney bloke. Also, Casanova's escape from the Leads Prison in the Doge's Palace was much less dramatic than the way Casanova described it in his memoirs. Nor does one get the sense that he was imprisoned for years. However, the whole thing was great fun. The story continues next Sunday.

That 'modern cockney bloke' is (I think, if I remember the programme right) David Tennant, a Scot, and the new Doctor Who. There's a brilliant little vignette in the first of his Dr Who outings, where he's selecting clothes from the Tardis wardrobe. He picks up a rather splendid piped frock coat and shirt with frills and ruffles that looks strangely familiar to anyone who saw him in 'Casanova'.....

Yes indeedy, it is David Tennant, and a fine actor he is. I comment upon the directorial decision to give the 18th-century Venetian, Casanova, a modern British working-class accent and dialogue. I assume it's to bludgeon home the point that he was from a lower-class family. It was a tad surreal. I nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed the program.

What's Dr. Who? A TV show? If so, do we get it over here (other side of the Atlantic)?

Elmer, "Dr. Who" is a British science fiction series (been going on for a long time, and Dr. Who has been played by a fairly large number of actors). In the U. S., it's carried by some PBS affiliated channels. Check your listings or call your local PBS affiliate.

More than anyone could possibly want to know about Dr. Who HERE, HERE, and HERE

What ever happened to "Blake's 7?" I used to watch that consistently on my local PBS station, and it just vanished, sort of leaving them hanging out in there in space.

Television and film are Mr. O'Toole's best medium.

Unlike his pathetic live-stage performances 30 years ago...in the new mediums he can do "retake after retake" and permit the editors to splice the best of it.

For a once-grand-live-stage personae....TV is a safe heaven if you've tippled to much but the industry wants to still milk your....!

Elmer, I thought the same thing. Nothing against Tennant, but rather the direction.

Maybe the Director felt that Cockney was right for Casanova, so to speak..............and, er, uh, well........Ya' know......It seems quite appropriate that a production of "Casanova" should include Peter O'Toole who has a double phallic name.

Okay, it may be a bad joke but I'll bet that when you watch the program next week you'll be thinking, "Peter O'Toole has a double phallic name," and cursing me all night.

I found Tennant's young Casanova silly. Sort of at the same level of Joey in Friends. I like O'Toole as an actor and felt he was good as the elderly Casanova but there was nothing of the young Casanova (as played by Tennant) in O'Tooles's character. Does that make sense?

Peter O'Toole was discovered in the Ladies Toilet.

"This is reserved for Ladies!"

"So is this, Ma'am, but occasionally I have to pass some water thru it!"
