Kennedy, Harry Truman, Janis Joplin, Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, the USNS Seawolf, Bob Hope, the USNS Thresher, and all of the "casualties" from the Vietnam War are actually frozen at a secret base in Iceland so that if there's ever a nuclear war the US will have a good leader and lots of trained and equipped troops to surprise the enemy with. And the troops will have great entertainment, too. Don't tell anyone. |

Subject: RE: BS: Little known facts From: GUEST,thurg Date: 14 Oct 06 - 12:23 PM "frozen at a secret base in Iceland" "Well that was bloody brilliant planning, what with all the ice up there melting and all... " Question for geographers: What's going to happen to Iceland when the ice all melts? Does it just disappear into the waves? Or do we have to start calling it Landland? Here is an interesting fact: Iceland was named on the opposite principle to the naming of Greenland - Lief and the boys figured that calling it "Iceland" would discourage just anybody from showing up on their shores. And now one of their two main industries is tourism (the other being cod-fishing). Go figure. |

Subject: RE: BS: Little known facts From: NH Dave Date: 15 Oct 06 - 11:20 PM Apples are the result of pollen from one tree fertilizing the blossoms on another tree, which may not bear the same type of apple as the one being fertilized, which results in strange results. ALL apple "trees" are actually the result of grafting a shoot from the sort of apple you want onto a sturdy root system, and waiting for the apples, which may have little resemblance to the root system. Potatoes are propagated asexually too. Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: Little known facts From: Gurney Date: 16 Oct 06 - 05:20 AM Rapaire, my pal's son just sailed to Fiji in his ferro-cement yacht. Quite a common building material. It has been raining there for three weeks, he says. Some landing beaches for WW2 D-Day had no harbours, so they built concrete ones and towed them over and sank them into place. In WW2 the British experimented with ships built of Pykrete, which is sawdust frozen in water. It worked, but the war ended before it was used, to the relief of brass monkeys. The formula is in Wikipedia, if you want to try. |
