ADD: You Know My Name / You've Heard My Voice

Many years ago, 1964 in the summer I believe, I heard a song which contained the words "You've heard my voice and you know my name". Which I believe was the ending line in either a verse or the chorus of the song. There were opening lines in one of the verses that went:

If you've ever kissed in the summer rain
Slept where the snows and the have lain
If you've ever heard a baby cry
Then you've heard my voice and you know my name

I have had this going through head for the last number of months.
Please help with the words and correct title.

It seems to me that the song your refering to was performed and written by a girl from Brooklyn College.

It was a real tear jerker - I will look in my 60's notebooks for the words.

My often faulty memory tells me that this was recorded by Glen Yarborough, but I don't know if it was with the Limeliters or when he was working solo. I just spent about 20 minutes going through the Limeliters' Web site, but couldn't find any mention of the song. I tried to go into Glen Yarborough's site, but the search kept crashing my computer. I hope it's not sending you on a wild goose chase, but I'm fairly certain if you can chase down GY's work, you'll find the song.

I first - and only - heard "You Know My Name" in about '63 or '64 sung on an album (can't help you with the album name) by a group called The NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS. They were a group of about 10 to 15 folks. Absolutely great tune and lyrics and I've sung it ever since. Never was able to find the original recording again. Have thought of posting it on You Tube, but don't think I could do justice to the Minstrels.

Art Podell is still performing NCM songs in a small band, along with founder, Randy Sparks, and Clarence Treat, among others. I just heard from Randy, who is recovering from recent cancer treatment and doing well.   

I also have the Limeliters vinyl album on which this song appears. Another treasure in my old record collection is "Art & Paul - Songs of Earth and Sky" from the early 1960's. Art was in Greenwich Village in late '50's, along with Paul Potash, who later wound up in both the Christy Minstrels and The Back Porch Majority (another Sparks entity). They made, I think, two albums as a duo, backed by Dick Rosmini on this one.

Amazon.com shows the song "You Know My Name" on The New Christy Minstrels Presenting/In Person CD. This is the version I remember from the '60s. You can hear a sample of it on their website.

I heard this song just once in my life. I was at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and the singer had a beautiful soprano voice. I shall always treasure the memory of it.

When she sang it, it was a bit different than the above. The words ending each verse were:

Then you've heard my voice, yes, you've heard my voice.
You know my name.

Technical question: what causes the apostrophes in the original to turn into O's with a tilda here at the Mudcat?

Amos copy-pastes from a Mac with weird fonts, and he comes up with words like "youÕve" because his curly quotes change into characters that are almost as strange as he is...

This is THE most rocking, driving song I've ever heard. It is on the New Christy Minstrels second album, "Live at the Trubadore" -- like cut #7.
