Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: Peter T. Date: 22 Oct 06 - 12:45 PM I wonder what I will have for lunch? As an environmentalist, I am of course not in favour of Tiger burgers. (The truth probably is that the team that sits around for a few days waiting for the other to win loses the first game until they smarten up. Hmmm, I wonder what crow tastes like..... yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: Big Mick Date: 22 Oct 06 - 12:38 PM "No one" here. Sorry, been a bit preoccupied with trying to slit my wrists. "She who must be obeyed" stopped me and kicked me in my royal backside, and simply reminded me that Kenny Rogers is up today, the lads have been off over a week, and quit being a fair weather fan. I would remind you that I called it in five games. Besides, Cobb, Gehringer, Kaline, Trammell, and Whitaker are all starting today. This one is in the bag. Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: number 6 Date: 22 Oct 06 - 12:36 PM Yikes .... did I say Tigers in 4 ?? sIx |
Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: catspaw49 Date: 22 Oct 06 - 12:34 PM Oddly, no one seems to have mentioned that Game One is in the books and it wasn't in the cards for the Tigers. St. Louis defanged Detroit 7 to 2. Just thought I'd mention it. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: Big Mick Date: 21 Oct 06 - 03:33 PM At last, a voice of reason. I can taste the 12 year old Jimmers already. Where's my Tigers hat. Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: GUEST,282RA Date: 21 Oct 06 - 02:36 PM Cards have World Series experience. That will help them. Will it be enough? Not from what I can see. Tigers should win this one. I'm almost hoping it goes 6 so they can take it in Detroit. But I'm going to give St. Louis a game. I'll say Tigers in 5. St. Louis has really not played well all season--several large losing streaks in mid-season--and would not be a contender in the AL. The Tigers came out of the most competitive division by far in either league this season and does not appear to be tankless at all. It just doesn't look to me like St. Louis can bring enough to the table. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Oct 06 - 06:45 AM Well shoot Chip, I not only knowed Abner but I knew his Pa as well and I tried to tell him that the kid should concentrate on games and not school but his Daddy wanted to be sure he got all educated so it set things back a few years! It may be rumor and ennuendo (nope, that ain't an Italian suppository) so I won't go around telling every one that you are THAT old. Pax, Chip2447 (tongue firmly planted in cheek) |
Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: GUEST,Coyote Breath (without cookie) Date: 21 Oct 06 - 01:29 AM Regional loyality aside I am convinced (voodoo is involved) that the Cardinals will, indeed, win the series. There will be seven games (money is the force here) and the Cardinals will win the seventh game botom of the 12th ining, the score will be 2 to 1. The win will be at the new stadium here in St. Louis and everyone will be pleased. Or the Cardinals will lose all four games, playing like a bunch of college sophmores. CB |

Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: Lonesome EJ Date: 20 Oct 06 - 06:55 PM The St Louis Cardinals have been World Champions eight times, winning the World Series in '26, '31, '34, '42, '44, '46, '64, '67, and '82. On that first Cardinal Championship team were all-time greats like Les Bell, Rogers Hornsby and Tommy Thevenow. But perhaps the greatest was a cantankerous character named Grover Cleveland Alexander. Born during the presidency of his namesake, Alexander entered the league, and led it in pitching, in 1911 for the Phillies. After six starring seasons, Grover was drafted in 1917, and sent to France where he served as an artillery officer. In the vicious hedgerow battles, he spent days under constant bombardment and came home in 1918 suffering from shell shock, hearing loss, and increasingly violent and frequent seizures. Despite his condition, the Cubs took a chance on him, and he pitched well for them until his alcoholism and violent clubhouse behavior got him sold to the Cardinals halfway through the 1926 season. The acquisition paid off royally for St Louis, and the pissed-off and inebriated Alexander became the Cardinals ace, helping them win the NL pennant and reach the World Series against the Yankees. In the World Series, Alexander was on fire, pitching complete game victories in games 2 and 6. In game 7, with the bases loaded and the outcome in doubt in the seventh inning, Grover entered the game again, struck out the side, and held the Yankees scoreless for a 3-2 Cardinal victory. Alexander pitched several more years for the Cards, but his demons eventually got the best of him, and he lost his arm, his health, and eventually his life. His records still stand, though. He is still the alltime NL pitching leader with 373 wins and 90 shutouts. And dugout legends say that, to this day, when the Cardinals are in a really tough spot, the spirit of Grover Cleveland Alexander walks with the St Louis hurlers when they take the mound. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Oct 06 - 05:22 PM Hellfire Chip, I not only saw Bob Gibson but also Bob Feller! I was only 7 then but my Dad said I'd remember that game......and I do. Feller lost and was but a shadow of his former self (his last year) but that motion of his and the leg kick.............When he was "on" in the first few innings he was still great. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Tigers & Cards - redbirds are goin down From: Big Mick Date: 20 Oct 06 - 09:31 AM This just in, Spaw. It turns out that Gehringer, Greenberg, and Cochran are fit and will suit up. They have been pissed since the '34 series, and are looking to avenge the loss to the Gas House Gang of St. Screwie. I am warning Ducky Medwick right now. If he comes into third again, with his spikes high, it won't be fruit and garbage they throw at him from the stand this time. Even Commish Landis won't be able to save him this time. Retribution is nigh, and the poor folk living in the shadow of the arch are due for a mighty disappointment. Mick |
